More broadly regarding Critical Drinker; I've seen quite a few "cynical" branded youtube channels that talk about media. I'm sure opinions here are also mixed on them, but I don't think anyone can deny Adam of YMS or the people behind RedLetterMedia love film and filmmaking.

Their videos, positive or negative, pretty consistently demonstrate a passion for the medium and its many details - audio work, camera work, the careers of obscure actors, and such a love of film that they find genuine enjoyment even in really bad media that tends to be incompetent.

None of this is present in politically branded film channels I've come across that complain about "wokeism" or insist film has somehow materially gotten worse. They are not there to discuss film as a medium. They are there to complain and sell you a narrative that their hyperfocused and rigid definition of what a film "should" be isn't being met and that standard Hollywood schlock - a fixture of filmmaking for decades - is now somehow a source of cultural rot.

I can't say that people like Mauler or Critical Drinker or TheQuartering or whoever love films or have much knowledge of them. They seem to discover well-loved classics far after everyone else did because they spend so much time & energy doing the equivalent of tearing down a shitty Michael Bay movie.

They don't seek challenges, they await a lot of slop that comes out of the movie industry, get mad at it for views, profit off of a predictable & tired cycle, and continue doing the same thing ad infinitum because it's not about the movies. You can see it both in how bad their positive reviews tend to be compared to any of their far more intelligent contemporaries, but you can especially see it in the sheer volume of negative, venomously made content seemingly designed to make people mad.

This isn't to say you must like the youtubers I initially brought up, but the contrast is enormous and it feels entirely in line with the type of content Sargon of Akkad would make in 2015. They never grew up, they just want to be mad, and they fundamentally lack curiosity and want to relive nostalgia and nothing more.

Misery, a lack of creativity, a constant deferring to "Classics" with little desire to broaden ones horizons, etc. All of it defines these "Anti-woke" media channels. They all variably suck, not because they don't fit some vague leftist ideology, but because they are very abrasive, overconfident, and stupid people.

I think it's spot on. Characters, not just female characters, are written very poorly nowadays in mainstream movies

did you know that non franchise movies exist and that film doesn't quintessentially boil down to the mcu and star wars

it's crazy because I'm not even asking for some shitty grab bag of whatever the Oscars say are good either, great movies constantly get snubbed. but that video is a perfect example of how he doesn't engage with film as a medium. his premises are based on the manchild Gen Xer/early Millenial view of the world where the five movies were Ghostbusters, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2, and Aliens. shit's embarassing

That's another good point. These types act like blockbuster cinema is the only cinema. Maybe they should branch out to other movies if they feel MCU/Star Wars/etc isn't for them anymore. But they don't actually like movies. Just the mass-market conSOOM stuff.

Critical Drinker reminds me of Synthetic Man. Synthetic Man is someone who "reviews" games and essentially only focuses on how "woke" something is.

I actually don't agree with this. I don't think a lot of these nucritic types that rant about media care that much about it in the broad spectrum, at least by now. It's predominantly a moneymaking scheme. Synthetic Man is clearly a "true believer" in his ideas. Like, he has self admitted that he more or less obsesses over cuckoldry because a girl he liked in highschool dated a black guy. He's definitely insane. I think Criticaldrinker is way more self aware and just generally cynically exploiting his audience, even if he himself is also something of a manchild.

Because Lukes feat is considered earned by him frequently bullseyeing womp rats of about the same size growing up. Luke literally says this to foreshadow it. Meanwhile Rey is just good at most things she has no experience doing for no apparent reason.

Luke gets his ass kicked by Vader after training with two Masters, Rey fares better against Captain Emo without any training at all.

Luke doesnt use the Jedi Mind Trick until Return of the Jedi, after which point hes learned under two Masters and apparently spent a good bit of time training himself between the two movies. Meanwhile, Rey uses the Jedi Mind Trick on Storm Trooper Daniel Craig instinctually, maybe without ever even having seen it (I cant remember).

It doesnt help that The Force Awakens is basically just a remake of A New Hope. It makes the writing look lazier than it actually is.

It's kind of funny that even RLM often seems to have a cutoff point of the late 70's / early 80's for their film education; Jay hadn't even seen The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly until a recent Re:View episode (and quite predictably loved it).
