It's not the worst, just the least best.

Better than Return of the King but absolutely not on the same level as Fellowship of the Ring.

never seen a lotr movie before. i was going to marathon the whole thing on netflix but it was missing one so im just gonna wait when all three are there.

I will say, despite it not being my favorite movie of the trilogy, it does have one of the best scenes: the Ents wrecking Isengard.

That and it definitely benefited the most out of the three from its extended edition.

IMO, 3>1=2.

All 3 are good, but 3 is the best.

I'd rank them 1 > 3 > 2 but they're all basically 10/10.

Any ranking of the trilogy seems ok.

I'd put it on a par with Fellowship, and above Return.

The Lord of the Rings movies having varying levels of quality and Two Towers is absolutely the bottom quality

isnt that like the worst way to watch since they arent the extended versions? Not here at least

The extended versions of Towers and Return are worse than the theatricals and with Fellowship it doesn't make too much of a difference (aside from the Smeagol name scene, why in god's name was that cut).

Hard disagree, because the only theatrical version cut that really bothers me is not getting to see the resolution of the Saruman plot line at the beginning of Return of the King.

(It should have just been put at the end of The Two Towers to begin with.)

Saruman's fate being unresolved is better than the insanely awful scene that resolves it.

It stands between the beginning and the end, enough reason for disliking it.

It's not really all that surprising. Independent of individual set pieces or character moments, the middle movie is always the low point in a three act structure where the heroes have their biggest struggles but before they rally and have their big victory. The middle movie has to carry a lot of the emotional weight of the good guys losing while making sure not to raise the stakes beyond what will be in the last movie, which for general audiences is going to come off as a combination of depressing and also feeling like the good guys didn't really make any progress.

I always assumed two towers was the most loved of the 3.

Its great world building and character moments. The sequels lose that in favour of overlong battle sequences.

They're all one movie. If people didn't like it I wish they'd at least say "it's the weakest part of the story".

It's like a movie like The Batman where people complaining that it's too long, and usually people will choose to cut the middle rather than the beginning or the end despite it might have been the best part.

They had a tough hand dealt to them regarding gollum & how to make him not boring. They kinda succeeded

It's the least good, but we're talking an 8 or 9 and comparing it to a couple 9 or 10s.

I understand they're literally different movies, but they are individual pieces of one narrative. It wasn't creative decisions that necessitated splitting the movies up, or even the books for that matter. Tolkien has said as much.

It's not like original trilogy Star Wars where the movies are thematically and narratively distinct from each other even though they follow the same characters.

There is no worst Lord of the Rings movie. Whoever told you that is misinformed.

ROTK is the worst everyone knows this. And personally Im a theatrical cut fan. Especially with the Fellowship. The opening doesnt hit the same in the extended.

Best set pieces, best battles, not as CGI-heavy, best character moments, best locations, tighter narrative

That's like saying Back to the Future 2 or 3 is bad. All three are good.

Yeah, I'd say that's the common sentiment. In online and in real life.

I honestly think it's easily the best one. Especially in the extended editions - there it's no contest.

This while fully admitting the Fellowship movie has a couple of the best scenes I've ever seen on film.

Such a bad movie, that movie that swept the Oscars and won Best Picture that year. Terrible fillum.

Im sure a lot of that is for the trilogy as a whole.

But its definitely the worst. I still like it but, man, they made some really bad decisions with some of the characters translating from the book to the screen.

I thought most people though that the Battle for Helm's Deep was the apex of the series?

There is no 'worst' movie in the LotR trilogy. Hell, at this point I find it pointless to even rank them.

It's a big negative for me. They screwed up the whole message of the book that it was the race of Men's turn to take charge of Middle Earth. In the books the ghost army only scared the enemies that were on/guarding the boats down the river and it was Aragorn, his friends, and the forces the Dunedain of the North, and the men of Gondor that joined up with the rest on the way who helped turn the tide of the battle. The ghost army seems almost like a deus ex machina.
