<srs answer>

They have to get back what they invested when they rented out the arenas, parking lots, security, utilities, permits, marketing, etc.

A large scale event over semi-niche interests aren't cheap.

I like cons and I've never shelled out the costs for an autograph or photo.

Never been to one, but I would guess the celebs that sell signatures and/or photos at cons are mostly on hit wonders that their only income anymore is running the con circuit and getting paid to sign things that are not worth the paper they are printed on because that is all they do.

I have never been to one, as they never have interested me before. This one interested me for Edward James Olmos, Sgt Slaughter and Steve Downes.

I don't go there for autographs. I go for the panels.

Then again those also have problems. C2E2 screwed up the Chris Evans panel big nice this year.

Its a mix, its stars from older shows, a few people from new shows, a couple larger celebrities and many many many voice actors. Anyway if you are willing to pay for the autograph and stand in line for it, then it is worth it as personal value matters.

I didnt notice that the voice actors charged for photos and autographs until recently. I always thought if you were willing to stand in line during their autograph times, they would sign your program book for free. The convention would pay them generously for their time, transportation, and lodging. Even professional cosplayers charge for photos or expect a tip.

I hate anime cons today. I only go to furry cons and Im going to stop going to them too.

I think it depends on the con, exactly?

I've been to a handful of anime cons and gotten 2 signatures total - one from Lia (the singer) and one from Nobuyuki Hiyama (voice actor for, among many other things, link in OoT)

In both cases, the main rule was that you can't get them to sign something totally unrelated to them. The signature book thing they sell at the con is ok, as were any official merch/albums/etc related to them. fanart wasn't ok, blank papers weren't ok, etc. In one case I sorta planned in advance and now I have a signed ocarina of time cartridge (he laughed a little when I passed him it to sign since everyone else had posters or etc of anime he acted in). The other case was a sort of spur of the moment thing and I had to buy some random album she was also selling there so I could have something to sign.

but in both cases there was no extra payment involved you just needed to get in line early enough

Gotta filter out the broke ass NEETs and fanboys.

If you can pay $200 to go to a refurbished office lot with recycled nerd BO and poor upkeep for a whole weekend instead of going on an actual vacation to a nice place, you can afford to pay another $50-100 to a participating celebrity for a photo or some shit.

In my experience the only ones not charging autographs at cons are authors. Everyone else does. Which is why I only ever get books signed.

Because they're very profitable, and high prices make sure that only people willing to spend money will show up and take up floor space. It's not unlike why some very famous celebrities charge $50+ for an autograph. Only the people who really really want it will spend the money, thus ensuring that people can still have access but that the celebrity doesn't just get a whole line of people taking advantage of generosity.

In other words...don't go to a convention if you ain't got stacks.

Big headliners are always expensive. People like Stan Lee and RDJ could cost over a thousand and people will buy tickets.

Luckily I recently got into newish comics and the artists charge nothing for autos and photos.
