What if it's a legitimately solid game so doesn't need to hinge on nostalgia?

I hope they at least add a good deal of new stuff. As a game, SMRPG is super short and simple. Even like a boss rush arena would be dope.

I agree. SMRPG is one of my all-time favorites, but it's pretty linear and the non-story stuff is pretty lean. Not exactly sure how they'd expand though.

They added a bunch of extra stuff to Chrono Trigger on DS and it was all garbage

I recall there being some left out enemies or sprites. If they polished a few parts and added a few of those sprites, I'd be happy with it. The game we'd gotten before was gold and easily one of my two favorite Mario games ever. What I don't want is either a long, inorganic bonus dungeon (Chrono Trigger on DS) or a dungeon builder (Link's Awakening on Switch)

Yeah I'm looking forward to it. I haven't played it for maybe 6 or 7 years because I played the everliving crap out of it for two decades. I was just thinking of starting another playthrough and then the remake announcement happens. Very excited.

Why would this version not have nostalgia?

You have convinced me to not preorder it. I have it on Wii U VC anyway.

What is likely going to happen is 90% of the people will enjoy it and it is going to sell extremely well, maybe to the point that they finally decide to do a sequel. The other 10% will be people loudly voicing their displeasure over nit-picky things and getting butthurt that the 90% can overlook these "flaws" and still enjoy the game. That is usually how it goes here with every major game release, Nintendo or otherwise.

In addition to nitpicky things, there's going to be a lot of "I wanted them to add *insert highly specific, largely implausible change here* and they didn't! 0/10." That's usually how highly anticipated releases go, even remakes.

Because it is a great game. One of the all time greats, there's a reason it's looked back upon fondly. But also, you have to understand the context of the gaming landscape it was made in. People in the west kind of liked RPGs, but they weren't super accessible/they were very time consuming to play. Then along came SMRPG, where it's up to the player to pick their fights, instead of just randomly being thrown into a battle at the drop of a hat like in Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest or what have you, then there's the timed hits/reaction systems where you get rewarded for pressing the attack/item/magic button at the right time to do more damage, or get a free item, or guard from damage. It made RPG battles more engaging for players at the time. And also, it has Mario. People love Mario.

I think a lot of people will enjoy it, some people won't really get all that into it, and a minority will actively hate it for silly inconsequential reasons. But also from what little we have seen, overall it looks very very faithful to the original, but there is that % thing in battles, and the list of bonuses, and also the game tells you when you can't react to something now.

I wish it was a troll but I seen it way to many times with remakes with a lot of hype. You might get a good one once in a while

My reading comprehension was lacking as a child, but I still remember being confused when an enemy used Drain, and instead of draining my health for the enemy to use, they just threw a fireball at me.

But my health did go down so mission accomplished?

It's a great intro to RPG's (which is exactly what it was for me); approachable, not too difficult, and very charming. It can do the same again for a new generation.

But, you have multi-tiered timed hits! Of all the games with timed hits, there's only like 2 with multi-tiered timing!

Actually both of my first RPG games had them; this and Legend of Dragoon.

I thought Geno was a Final Fantasy character.

It's just occurred to me that the "Geno for Smash!" crowd have probably become absolutely insufferable with the news of this remake. Though I guess that goes without saying, since it is the Smash community we're talking about and any discussion of "representation" and who "deserves a slot" is always insufferable.

The worst is when people advocate for random manga and anime characters. Like, seriously, what the fuck? Who would want this random ass character nobody has heard of? What would that POSSIBLY bring?

To be fair, Smash is all about the fanservice and discourse around what would make each individual fan happy is therefore inevitable, but it would be nice if people would A) stop taking it so ridiculously seriously, and B) have the self-awareness to recognize when their fantasies are far too specific or irrelevant to ever even be worth dreaming about.

Geno in Smash is certainly more likely now though. And ever since we got Sora, I figure anything's possible. IIRC the only hard rules are that it has to be a character originating from a video game, and that they appeared on a Nintendo console at some point.

And then they defend their suggestions with "Well Nintendo is Asian!" like even the overseas crowd wants yet another Fire Emblem swordsman. Both sides of the pond are as embarrassed of these extremists as the other, yet the extreme fans can't admit it.

Ive just seen it happen a lot of times lately remakes or high prolific games that generate lots of hype get crapped on release. Does it happen 100% of the time? No. But enough times to make me feel wary about it and concerned for others.

Yeah but Fire Emblem is a first party Nintendo game, and it's popular. I do agree there are faaar too many FE characters, but it makes sense that it gets representation.

Eh, huge disagree. Sometimes old games are just as good as new ones. It feels like RPG games age rather gracefully too but that just might be because its my fav genre.

most wrestling game fans still lionize the n64 games too btw

Because the old wrestling games were better they limit stuff now a days I hear the aew fight forever is closest to no mercy

You should google "Dragon Ball Super"

Not that I think Goku makes sense for Smash either, but that comment was not very accurate.

I probably won't get it on release date. They need to add new content to make it worth it than just a slight battle change and graphics update.

Why would people that hate super continue to watch and rate it on Crunchyroll? Its like saying 100% of people at a BTS concert think BTS is great because obviously.

Super is clearly popular and Goku's as relevant as ever but Super is fucking dogshit and its not nearly as popular or influential as Dragon Ball (Z) was. I'm fine with Toriyama looking over that fanfic tier garbage, saying 'Oh yes, SSJ3 forehead for Piccolo, good" and taking home a million dollars but every time I learn something new about Super it just bums me out.

Mario RPG is great but I'm not really all that excited about the remake right now since it looks like they're going for a near 1:1 remake, which is kinda lame.

I hope they do change up and add more stuff but we'll see.
