Like half the block is doing fireworks. My poor dog is freaking out. Never seen so many people in front of their houses, most of which have at least $1000 worth of fireworks.

I bought my dog some hemp seed treats for today, but it's so loud and obnoxious that they aren't helping at all.

Yeah fireworks suck. Just buy your dog a nice new toy and give them a lot of attention.

A nice tight squeeze will help a lot too.

The act of using fireworks isn't inconsiderate by default. It isn't up to people's neighbors to not perform a legal act on their own property for the benefit of someone else's animals. Though it might seem stupid to some, fireworks can bring a lot of joy to adults and children alike.

Fireworks well after a holiday are irritating, sure. Definitely agree with that sentiment.

I don't expect people using fireworks in a residential area to be taking other people's pets into consideration so it's inconsiderate by definition

I mean I get it, fireworks are fun and I don't expect everyone to completely abstain from using them at least on the holiday itself

He agreed on the equivalence.

But it does seem like the key issue here is other people being inconsiderate, not that the dog and family are being traumatized. I really can't empathize with that at all, but it does explain why dog people only care about this particular loud noise.

Yeah that was dickish but I really sincerely just don't get it. My dog hides under the bed from both thunder and fireworks (well really loud ones only) but... she's perfectly safe? There's no threat here. She just doesn't know any better.

Just seems like people want shit to complain about and pretend they're empathizing with their pets while doing it. Now if it's going for a week plus I totally get it. 3 or 4 days of loudness is enough.

The real solution here is every town needs it's own massive fireworks display and no one buy their own.

I mean, that's the case with a lot of different things. I'm personally annoyed by all sorts of things other people do in public or on their property, and I could suggest alternatives they may like that wouldn't annoy me as much, but I don't feel that's the right thing to do. Provided they are following local laws and aren't breaking any ordinances, I can be annoyed without believing their rights should be revoked.

Yeah, hard pass. Unless everyone could see it from their own homes, which seems impossible, it isn't quite the same. I definitely would not want to attend some massive gathering of people just to watch fireworks go off unless I was there for some other purpose before that. There's a certain sort of enjoyment provided by having your own show at home. I haven't done my own fireworks since I was in my teens, but those are some great memories with just me and a small group of friends and family.

He who? Leon made a counterpoint without agreeing to anything. colliding actively disagreed.

The only thing fireworks and thunder have in common is that they're loud noises that can occur "unexpectedly." But they're so vastly different in the quality of the noise, the source, the frequency, and so many other things that there is no equivalence here.

I had some neighbors who were just setting off fireworks for 45 minutes straight tonight. It might still be the holiday weekend, but they were still going at 11 pm and my roommate had been in bed for a while. So no dog complaints here, though I have certainly owned cats in the past who did not respond well to fireworks, either.

For the record, there are still fireworks going off every so often here tonight and it's after 1am now. When we did have our own fireworks displays when I was a teen, we only did them on July 4th itself and December 31st near midnight. I guess you don't technically need a holiday to use fireworks, but they were clearly purchased for the holiday so I'll never really understand people who still have them 4-5 days later.

Yes, I know my dog will be fine, but that doesn't mean it doesn't bother me seeing her get so worked up and anxious repeatedly during this time of year. It's like getting a stomach virus or something. Yes, I know after a day, I'll be perfectly fine, but it doesn't make the next 24 hours less miserable.

My neighborhood has random people shooting off fireworks (and/or gunshots) maybe twice a month. Often right outside my window since I'm in a good spot for it, so people come from all over the city to shoot them here. It's never more than 3-4 mortars though.

v_charon posted...

This doesn't make sense either though. Yeah personal fireworks are fun in the pyro sense, but the big shows have way nicer effects. If you want to be pyro there's a lot of cheaper and safer and more fun too. Steel wool on a stick is the best imo.

Yeah, like I said, I don't expect people to just abstain totally on the day itself, and we do give our dog some medicine because there's no avoiding it. Fireworks are fun.

It's the random fireworks on July 8th when I've just put my son to bed after he fought sleep for an hour that annoy me. Like yeah, I get it, it's a minor thing in the long run, but it's a minor thing to think a little bit about who's going to be affected by your loud displays, too.

When I was a child, thanks to The Little Mermaid, I thought fireworks caused thunderstorms.

Also, people cant expect others not to have fun on July 4th just because their dog is scared of noise. Thats what the veterinarian and Alprazolam are for.

Past that date, sure, you guys have a point, but no fireworks ever because it might inconvenience me personally is main character syndrome.
If people are doing fireworks it better be 4th of July or a local team better have won a championship(Celebrating the ability to finish in 2nd place or worse is lame).

But people have started doing this shit for a week and it sucks.

Or maybe you... just don't want to? I don't seek out large crowds and groups of people. I just don't like it. It doesn't have anything to do with being "too cool" for it, I'm socially insecure and dislike mass gatherings of people I don't know. Sorry.

They go fucking nuts here in the LA area too.

And they've gotten noticably worse on the 4th. Not ny noise level, but by oh god by 9pm the air is barely breathable. The last 3 years the 4th has turned the air into a fog of smoke that takes a few days to clear.

I think Tuesday probably has a lot to do with the excessive fireworks. People took the whole weekend prior to start going crazy, decided to keep it going on Monday, did their usual nutso on the 4th and then still had the usual leftovers that have been firing off the rest of the week.

My point is the shit is expensive and you can get a 100x better show for the same price or even free by pooling your money and doing a community show.

I've enjoyed the dinky little private shows at my friends' places here and there (they were footing the bill), but it's definitely not worth the money compared to other pyrotechnic options.
