How many years would you give up?

It's tax free with no other strings attached. You don't know the date of your death whether it's accidental or natural.

Same time now that I think about the deal, this could also mean that you know for a fact that you're basically immortal for X amount of years you give up. If you give up 4 years then you kind of know for a fact that you aren't meant to die for the next 4 years. Wonder what would happen if you just jumped off a building or something.

I don't really understand the logic there. If you give up X years and don't disappear, all you know is that you previously had at least X years to live. You said you don't know dates, so you could give up 4 years and die tomorrow because you were only slated to live 4 years more.

That they would. However, the money would solve a lot of their issues more than me being around. Whether or not that's selfish or selfless is debatable.

Nah, that's the most exciting years of your life.
Your arch-nemesis Fred is also on his last few years, so it's a contest on whether you can outlive him and dance on his grave (or if he'll dance on yours).

Also, make sure you take tap dancing lessons.

Basically all my relatives that don't trash their bodies live to be 80+. I'd be fine with living to 73 for over $1mil. The "hit by a bus" stipulation doesn't make sense though. What if you're "meant to die" from a lack of money?

I've always assumed I was gonna die somewhere around my mid 70s. I'd sac 5 years of that for $750,000 easy, that amount would easily snowball into making my next 45ish years a hell of a lot better.

Now if I were to die of unnatural causes early, say in my mid 40's, that'd be a bigger problem but there's no way to know.

So I guess I'd play it "safe" and sac 3 years for $450,000. Though now that I think about it, if you did 1 and then invested the entirety of it and got an average return on it for the rest of your life, I wonder when that'd be a higher total amount than each breakpoint. Google says 10%, so say 6% per year.

Quick math says that'd get you to 453,839 after ~21 years. I wonder how much you'd have to take at once to end up with higher than 150,000 on the average annual return.

If it advances your age by that amount of years, none at all. Total waste of youth for me.

If you stay your current age, but it shaves off these years from your age of death... Then it might make sense to gamble a little.

If you are confident you can make your 80s, you could take the million today in exchange for 7 years, invest it properly, and work much less over decades while that grows. Trading twilight years for an early semi-retirement is attractive assuming the person dies a natural death from old age.

Final answer: zero years.
