My last roommate dated a guy she met online from Wales (were in the US). In the multiple years they dated, then informally got engaged, he had come out to visit her many times, each time maxing out the time the visa allowed him.
She never visited him. She said she was going to get a passport never did. Said shed go visit the next summer to
meet his family- especially because they had talked about once married, they should both live there instead of the USA.
She randomly made it a problem by deciding it wasnt fair that she should have to leave the States when shes not a traveler, and doesnt want to start over in a strange place, which became the beginning of the end, honestly.

She has told me Multiple times, short of going on a cruise, traveling was an absolute waste of money because shed rather use it on things she could enjoy.
It REALLY blew my mind. Shes definitely a homebody/introvert but I just cannot relate at all to that sentiment.

Japan is very easy to visit without Japanese language skills nowadays, helps it's almost impossible to get lost with Google Maps and the likes.

Nowhere as difficult compared to 10 years ago.

Yea I could imagine that, Japan's signage and English skills is still pretty hostile to foreigners in terms of accessibility even today. I just decided to learn Japanese since I go there for extended periods.

Even if you can't, nowadays you just need a small spot of wifi and just need to get your Google Maps to locate you and start directing, and still works offline once set.

I wouldnt claim that it does. However, I would claim that those who are inclined to travel (not just those that actually have the means to do it) do tend to be more interesting than people who dont want to. There are definitely exceptions in both camps though, and theyre not that rare.

I do believe theres a lot of value in experiencing new things. Even if you boil it down to one component, say food for example, there are so many things you will never experience if you stay in one country.

I assumed we were speaking strictly about money for recreation vs survival. She was moreso saying shed rather buy video games and Pokmon plushies because she can use/look at them every day.
Whereas I would much rather spend money on experiences themselves, even outside of traveling. Like if it came down to spending $50 on a concert for a band I like vs $50 on a purse I really liked, Id prioritize the show (even tho the purse is functional and Id use it every day and itd last hopefully at least a year).

Yeah, I'd definitely rather have "things" than "experiences", myself. Experiences are too fleeting for me. Just about any time I spend money on an experience, some degree of buyer's remorse surfaces and there's usually a thought going through my head along the lines of "I could have gotten a video game with that money..."

To be fair, Ive always found it strange that a lot of people make out that you can only like one. I like experiences and I also like having nice things.

I dont buy that.

You might not have the money to have plenty of both at all times, but the idea that you can never possibly have nice and also have nice experiences is just not realistic. Its more plausible to say that you cant afford either.

I liked traveling when I was younger and my parents were paying for everything and the vacations were all during school breaks.
Nowadays I get really anxious about traveling since I'm constantly worried about the money being spent, that I'm missing something at work, or that I should be using my time off for taking care of the endless list of things that need to be done around the house rather than gallivanting around Europe or something.

I see youve not understood.

There is a clear difference between not having any disposable income resulting in an inability to afford either nice items or experiences, and having some disposable income but claiming that you can only spend it on things or experiences.

I've done the whole "seeing it in person" thing before. That's why I'm able to say that, for me, it's just a lot easier to see a picture of it, not to mention a lot cheaper, while still providing the same effect.

For that matter, "getting lost" is not fun to me and just serves to give me nervous breakdowns. I can deal with that sort of thing easier when it's a video game and there's no real pressure or threat of consequences. Real life, not so much.

For me it's two things. I'm a picky eater but I fear offending people by not liking the food. Two I'd feel like a nuisance if I couldn't speak the native language so that limits countries I'd be willing to visit

Most places just aren't that interesting. Nor do they have sights or experiances of some kind I couldn't just find in the states or are worth traveling 24hrs away to see.

I may go on a international vacation this year, and if so it'll likely be a cruise or resort of some kind.

For those saying no, I'd be curious how many are American. In America, you can travel for thousands of miles and still be in America, albeit with a different climate. That same distance in Europe will take you to a different continent, crossing many countries and cultures along the way. That also means it's way easier to go to another country for non Americans.
