I'd assumed that the US had among the most cops by capita but they're actually near the problem. Maybe its how they're disproportionately distributed around the country? Or the prevalence of copaganda on television? It feels like they're everywhere.

Cops in places like Russia will stop and randomly abduct people, usually women, just to torture them for fun.

When the list has entries like that, America doesn't even crack the top 100.

But also cops are a weird position.
Police are government employees empowered with rights the rest of us don't have and their job is to protect the government and it's laws and institutions from people in the country.
The military has the same job, but they protect from other governments instead.

Police aren't actually there to help you as a civilian. At best, your a source of money for them. Your property and your life do not actually matter beyond the cost of damages.
It's a little weird, but civilians don't actually have any advocates in current society. We have to protect each other from each other and from the police.

I can't comment on cops in other countries, but I can write a novel on the terrible experiences I've had with US cops

When we were fifteen, a cop arrested my brother for skateboarding on public property. He locked him in the back of his patrol vehicle for over an hour in the summer without the air going. He then tried to extort money directly from my parents to make the crime go away. My parents knowing it was a minor and a trivial misdemeanor said they'd take their chances in court. Which was good because the case never made it to court, because the cop in question was arrested for extortion.
https://archive.triblive.com/news/officer-charged-with-holding-onto-fine-payments/

Also when I was fifteen, I was arrested along with several others at a house party for underage drinking. We all got not guilty, because the cops didn't show up to court to testify. The reason they didn't show up? Because the mom of one of the fifteen year old girls was planning on presenting charges since the officers did a full cavity search on the teen girl yet didn't check anyone else's pockets or anything.

Once I was driving with medical cannabis in my car. Cop pulls me over, I hadn't smoked or anything. He accused me of it though, so he took me to get a blood test at the hospital. Of course I had weed in my system, I'm an epileptic with medical cannabis. He charges me with a Dui. I accept Ard, because if you don't and you're found guilty, it's a year long license revocation and 30 days in jail guarantee.

Last winter I picked up my girlfriend from work. On the way through the city, a teen stops us in the middle of the street, and then a bunch of his friends surround the car and start beating on it. My girlfriend, seeing a cop car sitting right there decides to get out and yell at the kids, thinking it was safe with the cop there. It wasn't, one kid grabbed her hair and started beating on her. So I separated them, ran to the cops window and banged on it and yelled do your freaking job. So he comes out, arrests the kid who punched my gf. Then I took a punch to the jaw from another teen. Some other cops finally show, kids scatter, they let them get away and then ask if we want to press charges. We said yes but that's gonna be difficult when you let them all get away. Eight months later still haven't heard a peep about the case

I don't personally know anyone who's ever had a positive interaction with an LEO, including myself. It seems like everyone I talk to has at least one story about the cops being completely ineffectual or downright terrible.

And for some reason, the darker somebody's skin is, the more stories they have about having terrible experiences of being harassed by cops.

If there are worse cops out there in a first world country, that's honestly fucking terrifying.

That's also just the gangs. There are other criminals with nothing to do with those gangs, like the child molester who lived down the street from me when I was little, and the other officers of LA's sheriff dept. did nothing about it for a decade or longer. That is one case in a single county in goodness-knows-how-many counties in the US.

Let's also not forget, in the same valley this had taken place, during the BLM protests in 2020, a young, black man was hung from a tree and the cops ruled it a suicide at the scene (um, no, I highly doubt it).

Has it gotten any better over there? Well, two weeks ago, a man outside of WinCo Foods in Lancaster was arrested for no legitimate reason, and it was forceful as the video showed. The video also showed his wife trying to record her own footage before one of the officers demanded she stop, and tackled her and threw her on the ground; they arrested her as well. All of this was caught by someone else who hid in the parking lot. Guess what? The couple was also black.

Thugs in uniform. They do shit like this on the regular, all across the country. My stepdad was one of the last "good ones" before he retired.

I think you need to rework your reading comprehension. What Jen said, and I am paraphrasing, was that these arguments for police in other countries being worse, because they do X, Y, or Z, are a bad argument, because the officers here in the US do, in fact, do X, Y, and Z. I'm failing to see where, in Jen's comments, she said every cop in the US does this. I'm seeing only that our law enforcement, in general, not in terms of every last officer, is guilty of some terrible shit, much of it illegal.

Yeah there are bad people in any group that gets large enough. When those bad people are exposed, are they removed from the group and shamed for their misdeeds? Or are they hidden and protected by a corrupt system? I'll save you the thinking and just let you know that it's the second one with cops. Every time.

I always get a chuckle when people ask "What were the police like in your home town?" and I can respond "My home town doesn't have a police force". If you have to "call the police", you have to wait for the cops the next town over to get there which could take upwards of an hour to get there. And because of that we actually have one of the lowest crime rates in the country, LOL!

Lots of reasons. One reason could be trying to change it. Hard to change it when nobody on the inside is working on it. Some actually try to help the community, as well Its also better to have at least some good cops instead of all the good cops leaving and having only the bad cops still in. Which would make things much worse Those are just a few
