The_shibe 07/13/23 3:41:40 PM #1:	The game had those beautiful prerendered graphics. But if you think about it, so did other games like vectorman, mario RPG, x-perts (yuck), etc. It wasn't the prerendering that made the game so impressive, though it was a huge part. It was the fact that the game was built around impressing the player. Things like this: The jungle levels have multiple parallax scrolling layers that move at different speeds, making the game look 3D sort of like virtual boy games do. There are snow levels where a snowstorm begins a good 3 layers behind the sprite layer. Then 2 layers... then 1 layer... next thing you know all 3 background layers AND the foreground layer have snow and you can't see a thing. The water levels have a transparency layer that waves and ripples, making it look like you're really underwater there is a level where there's a storm, it's at night, everything is dark, but lightning randomly light up the stage, and so do exploding barrels. There are many little details like that, which are only there to impress the player, they have no effect on gameplay. And they make up for a mighty impressive game. Compare to DKC in the GBC, which also had the prerendered graphics but not many of these details... it was far less impressive in comparison. DKC is certainly not style over substance. It has plenty of both.
