When do you deem milk to have expired?

Personally I draw the line when the smell is off, but I know people who will toss it after the sell by date.

Validate my choices CE and reassure me that mine is the only correct way, or persuade me otherwise.

I already don't like milk that much. I'm not going to play around with expiration any time past sell by date.

Sometimes the smell can come from dried up grime around the cap so I usually taste a bit from a spoon.

Smell. I seldom buy milk unless I specifically need it. I do buy chocolate milk a couple times a month but lmao that isn't going bad before I finish it.

When the taste is bad.

I don't go by smell; milk generally doesn't smell good regardless, even when it actually is still fresh.

I've had milk that was fine a week after the best before date, you can't go by that.

A good rule is a week after opening it. If you open it two weeks before it expires don't expect it to last to that expiration date.

Not just milk either, most products aren't expected to last very long after the sealed packaging is opened

first shake it, if it moves strangely then it's bad. then take a small taste, if it's not normal milk taste it's not worth it.

What kind of milk are you buying that only lasts a day or two after the sell by date

That's literally just marketing. It's a sell by for liability purposes.

A combination of smell and taste. Sometimes it'll smell bad but still taste kinda alright. It's only when it both smells bad and tastes pretty watery that it's time to toss it.

Depends on how often it's used. Bacteria will accumulate on the surface. If you pour a little out every day it'll last longer than if you just let it sit after opening it

a few days after opening it. though, my intolerance is getting worse over time, so i've mostly cut it out of my diet. But even when i was eating cereal every day, i was very wary of milk cartons that had been open for more than 4-5 days.

I don't drink enough milk to justify gallons so I just buy Fairlife, which has a sell by date of like 4 months later and is supposed to be good up to 2 weeks after opening.

Even so, I'm most likely to go by smell

My answer is day before expiration date. Some stuff you can let go a few extra days, seems like on the date most milk is starting to smell and taste slightly off.

When the smell is off. Technically this can happen long before the sell by date. We buy organic milk which typically has a sell-by date over a month out, but once you open it youre supposed to drink it within 7-10 days
