A little background: I started noticing charges made on my card that I know I didn't make, so somebody has my card info. This is probably my fault, I did enter my card on a few sites that were most likely less than honest, lesson learned there. So I called and requested a new card. They said I would receive it in 8 to 10 days (today is day 9 but it's Sunday so it wasn't coming today).

I guess what I'm asking is for those who have done this before is it a pain in the ass to activate the new card and make sure it's connected to the same account? I get paid again Thursday so I kinda need it by then, although I did cash out what I had on my card before I called in for a new one so I don't absolutely need it yet I can still do some shopping.

If it is a big bank, most of them now are either simply call a number that comes on a sticker with the new card or log online to your account to activate it.

I have never had any difficulty with a new card being associated with the correct account. It has always been as simple as calling the number and activating. Sometimes I have had to answer identifying questions, in other cases it was activated without question because I was calling from the phone number associated with the account.

Not at all.

Its trivial. Just call them and let them know you didnt make those transactions and you need a new card. The trick is if thats the only card you have you may not be able to use it until you get the new one, so may want to withdraw some cash first.

You'll likely not have it by Thursday. You can still just go to your bank and take cash out though.

IIRC some banks will give you a temp digital card that you can use right away through like Google Pay

I'd recommend getting a credit card, assuming you have the self control not to overspend. Make the majority of your online purchases with the Credit Card, and earn rewards.

I never buy a thing with my debit card. Very rarely even take it out of my wallet. More risk, I don't think banks cover fraudulent charges as easily with debit as they do with credit.

I should've mentioned that it's an online bank, so I handle everything by phone or on their site. I don't know if that makes everything easier or harder.

This is what I do, but I try not to go over 30% of the limit on it. Fortunately I have one with a high enough limit for 30% to cover my monthly expenses.

*As easily, was the poster's point.

They can handle debit fraud fine, but it's a lot slower than credit fraud.

Yeah, once. I had gotten super drunk with a work buddy one night and my card info somehow got stolen and received a fraudulent charge. I just called it in and disputed it and got my money back to my account plus a new debit card in the mail.

Im guessing every bank is different but I believe for my new card I literally just could start using it with the new pin Id received. No special instructions. Its just like how your debit card will get replaced after a number of years anyway.

I dunno, I never use mine except the rare occasion I need cash from an atm. Hell most of the time its in a junk drawer and I rarely pay attention to the exp date.

you call them
you say 'yo i need a new card'
they say 'ok'
the new one arrives 1 - 3 working days later
you open bank website as printer on sticker
you enter the code on your sticker
bob's your uncle

a debit card is a part of a standard bank account. you get given a card. it's linked to your bank account, just like the old non-debit cards

yeah, just call or request it online. it cancels whatever your card was signed up for and gives you a new number. usually takes 7-10 days IME

If it's a bigger bank you can walk into any branch and request a new card on site. They will sit down with you and activate it and ensure that it's properly connected to what ever accounts you need it to be connected to.

I have done this.

I actually needed cash and they looked up the new card # for me (before I got it) and let me set it up on Apple pay.
