Just finished Shadows of Adam and Ara Fell.

I like Slice & Dice, lots of replayability and gets very challenging

How recent? Because seeing as the newer of those is from 2017 would make something like Crystal Project kind of apply but I don't feel like that's what you're going for.

if you're into tactical RPGs, then Wasteland 3.

I hear that The Diofield Chronicle is also good.

Crystal Project is worth a look. It feels very Final Fantasy V with a open world platforming gimmick. I just was kinda dumb and didn't know how people sequenced broke so much and got annoyed because it didn't seem as open world to me but it was probably just me being stupid.

Jack Move was decent/good, but just get it on sale, it is really short. I "waste time" talking to npcs more than once and my final time of completion was exactly 10 hours and I also let games idle too. Emotional quick story, but wow that one goes fast.

Hell I really liked Mato Anomalies but it is a really rough gem from a technical level. Get that one on sale too, but I really did love that game. 6/10 and the best 6er I ever played. I can't rate it higher objectively because it has issues.

If you can wait a couple of weeks there's Baldur's Gate 3 on PC. It's I think September 6th if you want it on PS5.

Chained Echoes is a Chrono Trigger inspired indie that was a lot of peoples GOTY in 2022 and its short.

If you liked Ara Fell there's a game from the same people called Rise of the Third Power. I haven't played it yet myself though.

If you're into the indie retro style RPGs, Cosmic Star Heroine is pretty decent. It's pretty short as well but it's fun.

Chained Echoes is the best turn based RPG to come out in a long ass time. The fact that it was done by one dude is amazing.

I already played chain echos and it was great.

Ara Fell is a solid 7/10 game. Not that bad and got 20 hours out of it somehow.

It's best to think of Chained Echoes as a completely different experience than Chrono Trigger. Other than having battles on the overworld it's pretty incomparable.

Octopath Traveller 2

Octopath 2 is good. I think it was 40 on Amazon recently which is the lowest it has been so far (or so they say). It falls into these weird places were you can easily over level because the base encounter is super high and the dungeons are really small, so it's like I've been trying to find creative ways to level up my characters I got later. A lot of the stories are super interesting. Plus as opposed to what I heard about the first game, the party members interact with each other sometimes after an event you can hit start and it'll be a skit/chat b/t two party members about a recent event.

At the moment I cannot think of any other rpgs I played that came out this year or know of that I do think are truly worth your time. I played that demo of Eternights and it is still getting a lot of good press online, and I want to get into a game like that, it sounds dark at times. But the (non youtube "press") demo was an hour shorter than theirs, and it hit some moments but overall I don't quite see it being anything too special so far.

Glad indie games from small companies aren't getting slammed, but maybe the full release will be better. I think Mato Anomalies was better than it. Haha

Oh yeah absolutely, but TC said played it before. Also I think I'd give Arafell an 8/10. That was shockingly better than I expected. Way darker too.

One Piece Odyssey

I love one piece and found this aggressively mediocre. The combat was decently interesting, but too easily broken. And the environments were a mostly abandoned island and versions of old arcs where all you got was npcs rehashing old dialogue that would have fit in the original arc and not much motivation to explore the "towns"; they felt particularly on rails.

It made me realize what I like about an rpg is visiting new places with new characters we can learn about; a feel good repeat of old arcs with characters we know about doesn't really scratch the jrpg itch.

I think, as weird as this sounds, if just Luffy and one or two straw hats ended up in a totally new plot with mostly new characters it would be more satisfying...or maybe just not making an rpg off an established story -_-

If you don't mind F2P, Honkai Star Rail is actually a decent way to waste time, but it IS a gacha.

The Last Spell is pretty cool, but it... cheats at the end? It gets kinda frustrating. If you got some friends, Hellcard is basically 3 player co-op Slay the Spire.

Baldurs Gate 3 is also due out in just a while but it is a crazy long game.

Darkest Dungeon 2 is pretty great as well.

Can't really think of any "traditional" turn based RPGs that came out recently aside from Chained Echoes which you played, though.

From the dev updates, Eiyuden Chronicles seems to still be on track for late this year. Haven't seen mention of a delay.

Although I would bet on 2024 if that's the case, it'd probably be weird if they released close to the Suikoden remasters and just end up hurting both

Great, but could be better.

Or more like, it didn't meet my expectations in terms of "branching plotlines".

Gameplay is top, especially the first playthrough.

It's not recent, but try For the King. It looks ugly but it's really fucking fun.

You played Chained Echoes, so that was one.

Seconding Octopath 2 and Like A Dragon (the first one, not Ishin) as more recent bigger releases to pick at.

Darkest Dungeon 2 was mentioned, I'll just add that it's rogue lite in this iteration so ymmv.

And I'll add the Live A Live and Front Mission remasters if you've got nostalgia for older gaming eras. Live A Live was SNES (the precursor to Chrono Trigger), and Front Mission was PS1. Neither came out in English at the time of original release.

Eh. I love One Piece and thought it was a fun time, but I know people who havent seen One Piece at all who really liked it, so I can see that.

Didnt like the first Octopath. Will most likely play Baldur's Gate 3.
