First thing that comes to mind is Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. I remember these games being overlooked/not well-received by fans when they were released, and I blame timing. The first generation of Pokemon fans were now in middle/high school and it was "cool" to hate Pokemon. But nowadays those fans have given them a second look and found them to be a really great entry in the main series, and the second generation of fans whose first games were RSE are very vocal about them being one of, if not the best generation.

Another that I would have said a few years ago is Super Mario Sunshine. A lot of people hated that game when it came out but then years later said they liked it and wished they could play it again... until 3D All-Stars came out and they replayed it and remembered they hated it.

The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess

Unfortunately then Breath of the Wild was so good it stopped the same happening for Skyward Sword.

Metroid Fusion.
So many people were against the idea of it having a narrative, telling you where to go, and Samus talks
But who cares it was a fantastic game

As for RSE - I believe a lot of complaints were because of how they ditched the connectivity with previous gens - making the game have only 202 out of 386 possible Pokemon to catch - meaning only 67 of the previous 251 were obtainable
"Classics" like the RBY starters were not obtainable at all
Of course, the release of FRLG fixed this, so it was no longer a problem after that

Another complaint I heard from a few people was lack of inclusion of prior regions, but we were just spoiled by GSC having Kanto.

FF13 Trilogy.

I cant speak for the other two but if anything Id say XIIIs reception has only gotten worse.

Anyway, this is an expansion but World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade. It was somewhat controversial at launch for a variety of reasons from lore to the new races or zones to gameplay being often viewed as a lull between Classic and Wrath of the Lich King. Now BC is viewed as one of the heights of the game though not as fondly as WotLK is.

Earthbound went from lackluster sales and lukewarm initial reviews to a cult classic to generally being recognized as a masterpiece.

Okami and Shadow of the Colossus both went from relatively obscure to widely regarded as classics and almost obligatory on best games ever lists

Yeah Majora's Mask is a good one

Apparently Morrowind was regarded as the game that dumbed down Elder Scrolls for consoles when it first came out but now tends to be considered the best game in the series.

I remember New Vegas being considered a disappointment compared to Fallout 3 and getting a worse Metacritic score but now everyone seems to think it's much better out of the two.

Oh, one more - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. People were furious when that game was announced, and it launched to good but not exceptional reviews with a lot of criticism over the difficulty. This board always loved it though. However, when the Switch version came out, it actually reviewed a fair bit better despite being a quite barebones port.

New Vegas is a good suggestion.

I'd also add in Metal Gear Solid 2. I know it was well-received critically when it came out, but there was something of a popular backlash for a few reasons. Nowadays it seems both critics and everyday gamers agree it was way ahead of its time.

I quit the game over Lich King. I got tired of waiting for an actual raid to come along. Burning Crusade was vastly superior to rerunning a dungeon I got to see during vanilla, I didn't like Uldum, and then we got a fake raid with the Grand Tournament. Maybe ICC was really good, but I didn't stick around to find out.

ICC was indeed very good! Though of course it all depends what you were after.

And yeah the initial Tropical Freeze backlash was people angry that Retro was making another Donkey Kong Country game, especially over something viewed as more graphically ambitious (of course Tropical Freeze was a very visually impressive game but that was less obvious on stream).

The Last of Us Part II is a weird case where it isn't exactly beloved, but you won't be bombarded with people accusing you of being a woke Sony shill if you say you like it on social media anymore, which is impressive because that got Last Jedi levels of vitriol when it came out.

Congratulations on being part of the 1% that raided Naxx in Vanilla I guess? And Ulduar is legit a top 5 raid all time so thats a spicy take.

Also, I think there's a distinct difference between games where the reception has legitimately improved across the board, and where the people who dislike it just don't care enough to complain anymore. Despite MGS2 being mentioned several times in this topic, I don't think it's an example of legitimate improvement. The people who like it back in the day still do, for the same reasons, and the people who disliked it still aren't fans. It's just the former group still extol its praises while the latter has moved on. To put it simply: MGS2 hasn't gotten any stronger in a contest setting.

Most of the game mentioned in this topic so far seem like that to me, actually, except for Majora's Mask and Nier 1.

Yeah this is the real correct answer. I played 1.0 through to the shutdown and actually didn't mind it but I understand why people did. At 1.0 end it was unfathomable that it would become the most popular MMO over a prolonged period of time. It was far more realistic that it would just shut down completely.

There's no way anyone could have predicted after the 1.0 mess it would end up how it did now.

Nier is a good call too. Got shitty reviews at the time and I ended up buying it for like I dunno 5-10 very shortly after release because it bombed that hard. Again completely unfathomable it would become a cult classic and get sequels at all nevermind uber popular ones

Nier is a pretty incredible answer that's already been mentioned. Still feels surreal to me how widely beloved and widespread the series(!) is post-Automata when the original killed Cavia and was largely seen as a complete shit game because of stuff like the infamous review that got walled by the first fishing quest.

We didn't finish Naxx, but we definitely cleared a big chunk of it. Anyway, regardless of whether you were familiar with it or not, Naxx got real old real quick considering it was the only raid content besides two one-off dragons.

I basically stopped playing until Ulduar came out, and all I remember is there was an obnoxious vehicle combat to open it with and some bosses we cleared early on that I didn't care for the mechanics of. It didn't help that I was playing catch-up and everyone already knew what they were doing. I prefer contributing to being carried. But I wouldn't have said any of the fights I witnessed were particularly fun. They got to the final boss and I decided I just didn't care. Gave me Ahn'Qiraj flashbacks.

Fate/Grand Order, since the later story chapters have gotten much better than the earlier ones, and that the pool of Servants (including lower rarity ones) are largely usable compared to something like, say, FEH.

Also, base game The Sims 4. The barrage of expansions and stuff kits etc. is still very greedy, but at least some of the new features trickled down to the base game too.

Actually, this applies to 2 Street Fighter games.

Street Fighter III went from a fairly ignored game to a common fan favorite of the series.

Street Fighter V was hated on from launch due to lack of content, but went to being at least a respected game with the complete package. Though I dont think many people would still call it their favorite.
