Despite online servers for most Wii/DS games being shut down in 2014 along with the Wii/DSi eShops, the Call of Duty games released on those consoles used Activision's own servers and remained online and playable until earlier today. I believe these may have been the very last games on those systems that still had working online play without using external workarounds, so this truly is the end of an era.

My first experience with the Call of Duty franchise was Modern Warfare Reflex Edition on the Wii, and then I got Black Ops on the Wii and it's one of my most-played Wii games ever, so seeing these games shut down also makes me sad personally. I only got a 360 (my first non-Nintendo console) shortly before MW3 came out, but I still double-dipped and bought the Wii version of MW3 and the Wii U version of BO2 along with the 360 versions because I enjoyed the motion controls so much. So yeah, RIP CoD on the Wii and DS.

People will somehow try to justify this.

Jokes aside, I'd love to know the daily player count prior to shutdown.

Probably really low, like not even 50 people. But the fact that Activision kept these servers up essentially for nine more years than they needed to just for whatever few people were still left enjoying these games is a good deed worth celebrating. A good deed that's uncharacteristic of what Activision is usually known for, but still a good deed nonetheless.

Probably forgot they were still on.

Your wifi can't have anything better than WEP enabled for DS online to work, so you had to be dedicated (or just plain uninformed) to still play it online.

Nah. Those servers were probably virtual machines with near zero cost to operate and were intentionally left on and only got turned off when it became a security problem with their auditors.

Wasn't there something like 10 years ago where like 90% of games lost their online multiplayer, dlc, etc because one company handled all the servers and closed down?

You're thinking of GameSpy and they didn't run servers they ran a matchmaking service. The games were peer to peer. Unfortunately many games did not have a way to do matchmaking any other way so most of those games could only ever be played online again through lan VPNs.

My brother would play these games years ago. Even back then they were dead. They just had dedicated clans mostly.
