I've always listened to rock music but I struggle to get into new bands. All the new stuff I hear just sounds like it has no personality, if that makes sense.

Stations overplayed mediocre to just decent bands eventually said bands phoned it in more and more and it just spiraled from there.

It also doesn't help that as rock aged the line between classic and modern rock blurred to the point where modern rock stations play music that are now as old as the Beatles were from me growing up in the '90s. When modern rock stations added more to their Canon less and less room was open for newer material making it harder for newer acts to get noticed.

There's still room for rock music at the table as rock inspired country and pop have shown in recent years, but the stations need to change to give them a chance. I don't see rock being mainstream by being completely underground.

Honestly, it died because it's just stuck in the past, so failure to adapt I guess. There's even still a lot of good rock bands out there, but the most you'll find without digging in--and honestly, there's very little incentive to do so at a glance--is mediocrity and stuff from 40+ years ago.

There is a ton of great rock music out there, but radio and mainstream outlets don't play it. The modern rock stations play same played out generic stuff. Bands like All Them Witches, King Buffalo, 1000Mods, Elder, Graveyard should all get more attention. It is cool for me as I get to see them in smaller clubs, but sad that they are not more popular like I think they should be.

rock has "died" so many times but it always comes back in some form or other...

Disco nearly killed it in the 70s, Grunge in the 90s, pop and rap in the 00s but it's still around...

really the only time it nearly killed itself was in the late 80s when the hair metal craze finally faded, not to mention you can see the depths of darkness of rockers in the decline of western civilization part 2...you see just how messed up a lot of those singers were...

here's a classic:

While I agree, they don't gotta be, all they have to do is be different. But it's hard to find any new shit unless you actually know what/where to look for Rock.

I only found out about Clutch some years ago because a friend of mine from Maryland mentioned them, and they've wound up being one of my favorite bands.

My short theory is that rock bands have more mouths to feed and while you don't have your dinosaur record labels dictating how you must look and act to make it or we won't promote or cover expenses.

Now anyone can just SoundCloud themselves as a solo artist and make a name for themselves with little overhead if they get viral. I like a ton of indie rock, but I think your big time garage rock revival of the mid 2000s while stuff is still out there. Uhh Imagine Dragons I guess matters. Rock probably won't ever be that big if a deal for awhile the way it used to be.

People always say punk is dead or ska especially is deader than f, but you had bands like the Interuptors get some serious play.

It's just now there are more options to to hear the music you like. I bet Spotify has tons of indie rock or whatever too if ppl care to look for it.

Rock isnt dead it just isnt part of the pop zeitgeist right now. Hip hop pretty much overtook it as technology changed.

Pop music has become more formulaic but indie music has become richer and easier to access. There is a ton of great, new rock music, more so than ever, it just isnt charting.

Could not be more wrong, actually.

MTV resuscitated rock in the early 80s after it stagnated with Disco and the sort of soft rock blandness that came to be quite popular in the late 70s and into the start of the 80s...

If there was a weak period it was the late 80s with the saturation of glam/hair metal, but it regained it's footing in the 90s with grunge and a highly creative period of alternative and industrial rock.

So what really did kill rock?
Millenials and the record labels.

By the end of the 90s, Gen X were aging out of the "youth" demographic and the musical era of the very late 90s into the mid 2000s was just absolute trash... immature rap-rock, boy bands, post-grunge blandness, princess pop, kidz bop punk, and nu-metal.

The continual rise of hip hop and other forms of non-rock music proved too much, and rock never recovered despite a small effort in the early to mid 2010s of some interesting folk and indie artists.

Metal is different now.

The classic metal was always rhythmic and industrial, but most of the new metal I hear lacks melody or dynamics, with the exception of some prog metal - but even that genre seems to have fallen prey to showing off technical prowess over songwriting.

I can see where some people like the newer styles and genres of metal, but I'll be stuck in the days of Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Sabbath, Suicidal Tendencies, Dream Theater, and Megadeth I guess.

I think ppl overlook its evolved departure... wasn't overnight.

Nu Metal became popular rock at the end of the 90's, & then there wasn't a follow-up.

Rock music seems to have kept renewing itself with sound & appeal that wasn't there prior... until I guess there wasn't much left to uncover.

After Nu Metal you got pop rock and metalcore that never recovered. Other bands are trying but you gotta find them today. I havent found a good modern band to listen to in rock in a number of years though. The industry is constantly changing is a big issue. Should have kept the hard rock and numetal sound going for longer since it was so popular. Rock got left behind when its follow up wasnt pure shit.
