What do you think? As it stands, I feel it's kind of hard to overlook the fact that's quite unfinished.

No, the creator literally recreated a very similar story with a far more complete game in Xenoblade 3. It's time to move on. The creators of the series did ages ago

Less wordy and more adventure-y, perhaps. But the ideas and the scale are essentially the same, with some nuances added in, like having one's family from the past be involved in the story, or involving the history of 2 other games, without spoiling much... kinda

Xenoblade 3 has some bafflingly terrible ideas that ruin what could have been a stellar RPG. The elements are all there, but they decided to make a linear, dumbed down, cut-scene focused RPG that doesn't trust the player to understand the mechanics it really wants to throw at them.

It's like Star Trek Voyager: The premise is great - the elements are all there, but they didn't trust their own audience and made a show that fails to be either a truly fun brainless action adventure romp or a good sci-fi experience.

lol no. If Takahashi's plans for Xenosaga hadn't went down under, it would have absolutely destroyed Xenogears (and arguably still did, despite it being even more of an unfinished mess), even with a fully fleshed out disc 2.

Baldurs Gate 3 is probably the best at this point

I think playing through it when it first released as a younger person (obviously!) at the time... damn something about Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 7.

I really love Xenoblade Chronicles X, and that type of experience may not ever be replicated again.

For Western RPGs, there was something magical about Neverwinter Nights, even with it's chonky polygons... and Divinity OS.

For Action RPGs I give it to Sacred 2 and Titan Quest.

over grim dawn?

Absolutely.

Grim Dawn has the same problem a lot of action RPGs have over the last decade or so:

Late game, the classes are meaningless and indistinguishable. Having played through Grim Dawn a number of times solo and co-op... the thing that made me lose interest and not pick it up again, is how generic the late game felt. Every class combo, every build... was just a cone/multi-directional type blaster of various brightly colored particle projectiles. Even melee classes were no longer actually reliant on doing melee damage, everything was just blasting waves of pretty sparklies at dumb, suicidal, fast moving mobs, with occasional damage sponges that could kill you by opening up damage fountains underneath you.

Actually I'll add onto this and say that Xenosaga has always been better. The character designs are worse, by far, but everything else is leagues ahead of Gears.

i recently played xenogears for the first time
and i have some issues with it
for one chuchu exists thats a black mark on the game as is
but a major issue is that it has some really awful dungeon designs. like 3 dungeons are long identical hallways insanely easy to get lost in and arent fun to navigate
the mines, the flying city where you meet maria, and the final dungeon
and of course the tower of babel with the irritating platforming sections

and this one is more of a personal thing but im not a big fan of mech combat and eventually mechs completely take over the gameplay. i went out of my way to get emerelda's adult form for nothing since there arent any bosses left fought outside of mechs at that point in the game

its story is amazing though
but i feel xenosaga's plot was overall better

fei is a cool protagonist and all but love or hate her i honestly think shion is the most interesting, complex and well developed lead in the genres history

It already is.

To be honest, while I do of course it would be better with a finished second disc, I actually don't think it was be that much better. It was already a long game by the standards of the time, the story really might have dragged it some places.

I still think it is, even with its flawed Disc 2. But with a completed game it would have been in a lot more people's minds, yeah.
