Could you ever be truly convinced that it was the "real" you coming out the other end?

Would it even make a difference provided they had all your thoughts, feelings and memories?

It might not to anybody else, but it makes a difference to me if everything carries over except my personal sense of consciousness.

So no, I wouldn't.

I have no idea where this line of thinking comes from. Because I'd absolutely think it's the real me. This is a teleporter, not a cloning machine.

It would have to be teleportation that was a instant transmission of me. Not a reconfigured assembly on the other side. But also teleportation is extremely dangerous(Tying to teleport into an occupied space?).

So even then possibly not.

I think it originally comes from Star Trek

We know so little about consciousness, if its momentarily interrupted how do we know it hasnt just rebooted and is actually continuous?

See, this is something this topic has previously made me think of a bit. If we have the technology to literally reconfigure our matter onto the other side of a teleporter, theoretically we could also have the technology to just scan the configuration and clone ourselves.

So just give me a perfect clone instead.

I'm now imagining a situation where souls and the afterlife exist, and them just becoming inundated with thousands of copies of everyone as new souls are born and killed with each teleportation. Like you suddenly wake up in heaven and realize the teleporter killed you, and then you're greeted by all your previous versions that used the teleporters before you.

Sleep is different anyway. The mind is still actively running consciousness, just inward instead of outward.

Its like the difference between putting your computer in rest mode versus shutting it off. When youre put out by anesthesia your mental functions are off outside of the most basic brain stem stuff

Something to add to the "is it really you?" question. Unless it's moving your particles faster than the speed of light, anything that's reconstructing you is doing it with the matter at the new location, not the matter that you were made of. So we have an extreme ship of Theseus problem, even if we ignore the consciousness question.

Of course we're already breaking physics so what's a little more.

Probably.

The only thing that would have me hesitating is more "what if it fails catastrophically" and like it tries to teleport you where matter already exists and you end up like fused to a building and die horribly and painfully. Or like failed to actually deconstruct you properly or some shit.

As to the philosophical dilemma of "if you're deconstructed and reconstructed perfectly is it still really you?" I think I'd accept "yeah i am" pretty quickly.

Philosophy has already gone way further than this topic and this comic though. No sleep or teleportation required.

In fact, from one moment to the next, there's no way to know if "you" ever existed, let alone maintained a consistent existence between those 2 points in spacetime. You could've been brought into existence this very instant, with the past being an installed memory that never actually happened. There's no way to experimentally distinguish that scenario from a fully lived life.

Quantum mechanics also agrees with that interpretation, including theories like the block universe and super determinism in general.

So yeah it's a dumb comic but you gotta answer way harder questions in physics and philosophy if you want to say the teleporter is a bad idea.

how does the past being an installed memory conceptually fit with the notion that we have a mostly timebound linear conscious experience? was i just experiencing the memory coming into creation before colliding with the present?

edit: and i mean that outside the teleportation scenario, because it makes sense there

So the one thing it will share with current forms of transportation is the chance at a horrible and painful death or permanent injury.

Yeah basically. Your only interaction with the past is through memory, so as long as the memory is fully formed, there's no reason you had to actually have lived what you remember.

Mathematically, time can run backwards just as well as forwards, so our linear memory is not really a function of time. We don't exactly know why we experience time in this forward fashion.
