A new policy at Cook County Middle School does not allow students to talk during lunch hours or during class transitions.

Parents and students have raised concerns about not being in agreement with the new policy, and according to parents and students, the students are only allowed to talk during Friday at recess. If students talk, they are sent to in-school suspension. Parents were never notified this policy was being enforced until students informed them after the first day of school. One parent says she was told by school officials that this is being enforced as a proactive tactic to keep students disciplined.

I think its insane, they cannot speak in the hallway they cannot speak in class, a parent said. They have to walk in the two-tile square that is closest to the wall to pass between classes.

Some even told WALB they feel as if their kids are getting treated similarly to inmates, and they want a further explanation as to why.

Its okay for them to make a name for the school sports-wise but you get them in there and you want to treat them like that those kids are not in a penitentiary. This is not reform school, and this is not a prison, another parent added.

Cook County Middle School made a statement on Facebook;

Cook Middle Schools administration and staff appreciate the concerns you have expressed in regard to our new lunch and transition procedures. MS is striving to ensure all students understand the rules, routines, and procedures needed for a safe and orderly school environment so they can excel academically and socially. After three days of following appropriate procedures, students have risen to the occasion and exceeded our expectations. We have seen improvements in hallway traffic flow and our ability to attend to students needs. Our desire is to effectively model and teach expectations as we begin the new school year to strive for success. We value your help and support in this endeavor, and we look forward to our students having conversations during lunch in the coming days as they continue to demonstrate responsible behavior.

Parents told WALB that a big part of their students development is practicing social skills. These comments on Facebook show how distraught parents are knowing their childs speaking rights are taken away. Due to this new policy, several parents are having lunch with their children at the schools during that time to give them some freedom from school.

I dont know what point they are trying to prove or what kind of control they are trying to get but this is not the way to do it, if there is an issue with the kids that you want resolved involve the parents, said another parent.

We spent the day at the board of education trying to get a hold of the middle schools principal, the superintendent, as well as the administrators for further explanation and where the policy stemmed from, but no comment was given.

Beyond fucked up. Schools already screw over students by downplaying the importance of social skills for general success in adulthood, and this is taking that up to 11.

No talking and walk along the wall when passing in the hallways? One parent described it being like prison and that sounds spot on. Makes me picture the kids walking down the hallways like this

fucked up. i went to a school like that for 7th grade. we had alphabetical eating assigned, in the cafeteria, so you were packed in too close and no one was friends with anyone near them.

i hesitate to even call it a prison, as there are prisons that treat prisoners better than my middle school treated us.

Running schools like a prison was always the goal.

Yep, when you think back to it they were crying about how nobody would be able to see their child's "beautiful smile", but it is interesting to note none of them ever did it to defend their ability to speak or converse, it was always their bullshit smile that was the true loss.

Which, y'know, statistically speaking your child probably has some pretty fucked up teeth, like most children do, so your child's smile probably isn't all that great (yes I know they don't actually care about their child's smile, they just wanted to say fuck you to anybody who took COVID seriously).

the kids should remain utterly silent as a form of protest, not responding to teachers or staff, even going so far as to refusing to talk outside of school or at home

So they are on like a probation like stage to demonstrate responsible behavior....I agree with one of the comments about "this is not the way to do it". If that happened during my middleschool we would of all rebelled to the fullest.

students would objectively learn more if we just threw them all in the gym and gave em a few computers/phones

Honestly the hallway rule is needed sometimes, especially if you have classes moving in the halls while other classes are still going in the class rooms. Kids can get extremely loud and if you dont keep them in a line in the hall everyone can get mixed up and distracted by other classes and then everyone is late.

The lunch time rule is absurd though.

If this was happening at my sons district, I would be raising immediate hell with the school board.

If that was stone walled, I'd get petitions going to start recall elections for every board member supporting the policy and who refused to reverse course. I know how to get something like that started where my son attends, and all it takes is is something like a small percentage of those who voted in the last election. Since so few people do (The town is around 6,000 people, and maybe a few hundred tops vote in school board elections most years.), it would be easy to get enough signatures needed and start a campaign to oust the bastards.
