Alright here's the draft XXVI nomination list which I put together a while back. I have tried to cram in both a Year of Pets and a Cid Bowl, not really fully committing to either but getting a few extra reps from each. Plus the XVI debut is covered too. So all of this, and then 10 Narshe moogles for contest XXVII right???

So that would give us In total:

5 pets (plus best boy Torgal)
4 characters named Cid (plus pre-existing Cids H and P, plus XVI's, plus "Cidney")

11 returning characters (no contest newbies beyond pets and XVIs)

For the "returning" 11, we got a mix of the following:
-contest "legends" which have appearance streaks (either consecutive, or "every contest they're not in a hardbooted state") which I'm assuming their supporters would like to maintain: Yuna, Edgar, Sabin, Beatrix, Sazh, Faris, Yuffie
-Braska and Ultimecia for pre-stated desired runs for those characters
-Estinien 'cause FFXIV
-Elena for REBIRTH BOOST (alongside Mr. Dolphin)

Also, Dark Nation makes the "pet" cut for stats debut even if its pet status is questionable... Judgemaster Cid is similarly included for needing 1 more appearance for stats.

Not sure if I'm too aggressive or not aggressive enough on the XVI count, looks like XV had 6 characters after its debut but one of those was a joke, so I figure 5 is a decent guesstimate. But the game is better so I could see it pushing up to 6 or 7, then the question is which of the others drop off...

Just missing the cut:
-Mjrn: I had to drop her for Sabin who I neglected originally until I realized he was an every-contest-when-not-hard-booted character so I'm assuming there'll be a push to bring him back. And I'm stuck with not being satisfied to drop any of the pets, Cids or XVI character slots to fit her in so I'm not sure which misses out!!
-Wakka: no room when carrying Braska and the Yuna return, let's just let him rest...
-Ward: I had him slotting in as a "99th place" sacrifice candidate but no room for him
-Shelke, Zell, Aki Ross: discarded in favour of Ultimecia!
-Several pets (Syldra, Daigoro, chocobos were all on shortlist)
-Several Cids (Cid Fabool/FF9 would probably lead the pack of missing ones imo)

Who am I missing? Do we sacrifice the Cids for more pets & other characters? Could XVI top 5 noms or is 5 even too aggressive? Let me know what you think!

Nothing I just wanted to zing him. And besides, we'll be in a post-Rebirth world next year, Remake-only characters will be in the dustpan of history (not to mention having had 4 chances to nominate them up to this point...?)

There's no way Roche doesn't come back at some point after you get the buggy.

Because thematically it wouldnt make sense? The point of Midgar is that no one leaves, travelling in that world isnt like hopping on a jet or something? Any Midgar NPC we see in Rebirth other than Johnny, Don Corneo or Leslie would be a stretch imo... maybe you get Andrea vacationing in Costa Del Sol or something but I'm just not feeling it! (Edit: oh yeah Roche could be travelling w/ Rufus and company too, assuming he wasnt discharged/court martialled/whatever for what he did...)

It would make no sense for Andrea to be in Rebirth, but Remake made it clear that they aren't beyond nonsense in these games, so he could be in it!

Leon: I like your XVI recos but I also dont like to discuss the game out of respect for those who havent played it... while i am a Jill fan I know a slot would be wasted on her so no point. Benedikta though, would be a nice nominee imo , so good. But not over Martha and Gav, yeah... and I know there are Dion fans so that's another contender

Edit: also "Suspicious Character" will be a great joke nom at some future point, I forget if he's actually named in the datalogs of whatever but that's his 'name' through his death scene so good enough for me!!

I agree mostly with that nom prognostication. From an ffx standpoint, I wouldn't mind waiting one more year for the wakka redemption which can be paired with a lulu hardboot return and maybe chappu or their kid to make it a family affair. Good FFX theme runs have had success in these contests over the years. Next year can be the smaller-themed father/daughter pilgrimage.

I'd like to put in a formal request to nominate a character we've discussed on discord: Mr Prickles, who is a cactuar in the DLC of the Jack Garland game.

And any pet list is incomplete without Clove.

It's gonna be hard to avoid spoiler implications for XVI once people start nominating Joshua, and maybe Ultima, too, if anyone actually wants to support him.

I would not be shocked if the playrate for XVI and Rebirth is like, 25% for the save my base because most people are like me now and play games at a glacial pace

Thats partially why: does XV even have a 50% playrate amongst us?

Yeah I got caught by that when MWC returned with a "JoshuaRosfield" alt and I'm like, weird to name yourself after a character that dies so early in the game anddddd then I got to the part where he wasn't, lol. Well people still have a good 8 or 9 months to play it I guess!

Feels unrealistic not to expect a XIV newcomer every single year.

Replace Braska with Onion Knight and Elena with Andrea and Judge Cid with Hojo

maybe a few pets for some blitzball players and/or Thancred

No Snow in year of pets would be disappointing, but I guess without Snow (human) there'd be no point.

The goal/joke was always to get Snow (cat) better stats than Snow (human), which wouldn't be too hard even for one dedicated person. I just don't want to spend that many years focused on a character who, lets face it, doesn't even qualify as a character.

If I ever have my own Ghido or Layle, a minor character I push solo year after year, I want it to be someone at least a little bit relevant. Someone like Brother!

I am very much against shrinking the field. 100 is the perfect number, it allows room for fun minor characters in addition to major characters. If the field were limited to 50, that would only mean the top three characters from each mainline game and two from FFT. Sure, a lot of FFs wouldn't get three (1, 2, 3, 11) but the other games would quickly gobble those slots up just for other major characters.

Plus, FF is only getting more characters. XVI will already take over three slots next year and probably hold them forever.

Unless it's a major decrease to 50 or 75, I'd question the point of decreasing at all. Ten fewer days isn't even worth it.

As a host I can see having 10-20 less days being pretty cool

I like 100 but I wouldn't be opposed to a twist.

100 rounds is a lot, especially as you get older and have more responsibilities.
