Are Laguna and Quistis really 'returners'? They were soft-booted sure but haven't been absent from a contest in a long time.

we used to have nomination slots specifically separated into new entrants and returning entrants

I've talked about smfffc enough that my brother has expressed interest in participating. His favorite FF is XII, though, so I have no incentive to make him follow through on that

My wife let me use Ace Attorney names as middle names. Would've been first names if I didn't know other who went by Mia.

Our dog's name is Maya. If we ever have a boy dog, his name will be Phoenix. If we ever have a boy cat, his name will be Mr. Edgeworth.

Yeah, it sounds like a name that people who don't know FF could feasibly settle on.

I had to explain smfffc to my mom a few days ago.

I was driving her to visit a relative out of state. Right when we got on the freeway, I got the ping. I had to hand her the phone and explain to her what to do. She's not good with technology so I had to navigate to the topic page myself. Then I handed her the phone and told her to type in A-E-R-I-T-H.

Mom: "What is that word?"
Me: "...don't worry about it..."

I obviously couldnt leave it at that though so I spent a couple minutes awkwardly explaining smfffc to her. She didn't really get it. The awkwardness continued as I had to explain how we'd have to do this whole thing again in an hour. Thankfully, I just timed a gas station stop around the next hour mark so it all worked out.

you didn't let me get to the best part. My mom got so intrigued about the contest that she wants to play too. She's creating a brand new account to participate. It just so happens she's a big Seymour fan. Must run in the family. *wink wink*

I've visited my parents in the past when SMFAS was on, I don't recall if I ever had during SMFFFC. But I was able to play it off as "an online game that can start randomly and after it starts and I play it I need to return every hour to keep playing it".

Back in July they were in town visiting and we went to the movies and I was checking my phone every 45 minutes for the start of a new round and I'm glad they didn't notice and ask because I'd have to explain it all over again, lol...

It's funny how we all kind of hide participation in this game from people we know IRL.

This isn't exactly the same, but I was playing a game of b8 mafia that started up the same day my sister got engaged. We had an impromptu party that night and I got absolutely hammered. We wound up crashing at their place overnight. I was laying in bed with my wife, drunkenly scrolling my phone and saw that I had rolled miller. I desperately tried to explain to my more sober wife that I was a miller and she had to help me tell everyone. She had absolutely no idea what I was talking about so she tried to get the phone away from me because all she could see is I was trying to send a series of incoherent messages to some message board. Like just strings of random letters were what it ended up being. I was determine to claim miller, so I ran to the closet to continue trying to post until she finally managed to get the phone away from me and get me in bed. Before I fell asleep, I apparently told her she should be proud of me and I wanted her to tell my children some day.

In the morning I had to explain to her what forum mafia was, which wasn't that hard because we played in college semi-frequently. But still. That's like a top five embarrassing moment for me.

posting updated "new entrant" table (original at post #233 with a bunch of notes and stats following it) now with colour-coding to indicate contest debuts & characters immediately returning from a soft boot in previous contest; so white/no colour is a character returning from 1 or more contests of absence. Also adjusted some sizing so might avoid compression entirely this time...

Interesting how, for "returning after any absence" characters, Kain was the best in XXII! And we're down to just Quina and Vincent for this year for that title, though we're a long way from Kain's 19th place finish, let alone Dad's 12th last year, so will be interesting to see who outlasts & how far they can go.

XXII really was a banner year for contest debuts too, damn. I guess that was following on Shadowbringers and 7R though Dark Nation really was a greengravy run more than a 7R run... Ardyn lost the tiebreaker to get in the contest year before, and iirc Judgemaster Cid was a Shaduln initiative (with assist from Bane after early Vivi exit?). Ba'Gamnan, another Genny powerhouse performance respectfully following up Braska's the prior year.

Did you succeed in posting anything and if so, is it archived anywhere?

I did! I don't remember exactly what I got out though other than gibberish. I do remember being so embarrassed I replaced out the next day.

I'm not positive if its archived, but maybe. I think it would've been when reg was routinely archiving games but I have no idea if that's still active or not. I don't remember the exact game, but it was one Chris hosted and he had like four millers in it.
