You would expect the movie about Spaniards to be dubbed by Spaniards

It's a different enough language, I think. If you want to distribute a movie in Latin America, a dub in the Spanish of Spain may be rather hard for viewers to understand.

Sure, but if there's a foreign movie that takes place in Britain that's coming to America, you'd expect the characters to have British accents rather than American.

That's accents, though. Unless it's a particularly difficult regional dialect, English-speakers everywhere will be able to understand what's said. I guess ideally you would want the dialogue spoken with a Spain-like accent by the characters who are from Spain.

Not really. Spain is the "default" country for translations into Spanish. Castilian and Latin American Spanish are about as different as British and American English.

Yeah this is basically what I'm saying. British English has different vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation from American English, but not incomprehensibly so. Castilian Spanish has different vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation from Latin American Spanish, but not incomprehensibly so. It's a movie about people from Spain so you'd expect to hear Castilian Spanish.

Ah, I had the impression that they were more different than that, but I don't know how to speak any of them so I wouldn't really know. As you may have guessed from me being unable to think of the word "Castilian".

Wasn't it translated to both Castilian and Latin American Spanish? I know Disney movies tend to get both at least. Not sure about El Dorado.

Given that the movie is set in the early 1500s, what they actually spoke is going to be pretty far from both modern Castilian and modern Latin American Spanish.

I think it's pretty common for things to get both a Latin American and a mainland Spanish dub, though I don't know about Road to El Dorado specifically.

It is a standard practice, yes.

Conversely, giving a Spain dub in Latin America would be like giving a simplified Chinese localization to Taiwan. There's more than just language involved, there's complex cultural considerations in localization.

And in fact UK and US localizations ARE considered different. British English is considered a specific style in US media, it's not just neutral English. That's why Xenoblade wasn't being released in the US despite having an English translation. It wasn't localized for the US. And now the Xenoblade series is known for this regal high fantasy style, like Game of Thrones. It's cool imo but it wasn't the original intention of the devs.

My fav is that everyone in MGS3 is fully speaking in Russian, but the game itself was never dubbed to Russian.

But it's also why MGS3 is localized as neutral English or neutral Japanese. It's meant to sound like regular people speaking the local language. Not a bunch of spies with Russian accents.

Snake's Japanese VA wanted to do the entire game in Russian but the rest of the cast was like "uhhhh nope"

Also the only person in MGS3 who speaks with a Russian accent is Granin, which implies he's speaking to Snake in English.

I think that's true, since he knew Snake was an American spy
