It's the title where I started to lose interest in the series.

I dont list 5 because its not a real mg game.

I know for many snake eater is their favorite but to me it felt like an unwelcome guest in the trilogy. I didnt hate it, but Inkegit hated certain boss fights.

It had its flaws like any other game, but it was released to universal acclaim from critics and consumers alike. Only recently have I noticed people starting to turn on it.

Im not saying you cant personally dislike it for whatever reason, but it was a good game damnit!

The End is definitely a fight I respect more than enjoy. Not a big fan of The Pain either. Compare to MGS2 where I like all the bosses (not counting Fortune).

MGS1 is best played as Twin Snakes (the original controls awkwardly), its just a shame they went silly and childish on the cutscenes and didnt rebalance the game to account for first person shooting.

This is true too, I had no interest in MGS5 or any of the others.

I finally understood what "nerdgasm" meant when i arrived at the helipad and music kicked in. Thank you Kojima-sama

You should check out this three and a half hour long video essay called Metal Gear Solid 4 Was A Mistake. It goes into the development of the game, it recaps the plot and breaks down the positives and the negatives as the video goes along, and it discusses the shortcomings of Kojima as a writer as well as a pure, untethered creative:

Yeah, I completely forgot they were even in the game until your post, lol.

At the time I played MGS4, I was part of a MGS roleplay forum and also like thirteen.

The Beauty and the Beast backstories could have come from that forum. Right down to shoehorning their respective animals in.

My only complaints about MGS4 are

1) opening with a level set in the middle east in 2008 or whenever it was, was grossly cynical and uninteresting. Maybe it was meant to be like "look, the endless wars? It's like our real world wars!" but it just managed to feel like I was navigating a COD4 level for 2 hours.

2) i don't like Big Boss' characterisation as someone who gives a 15 minute speech while taking a comically long time to die. Maybe the one part in the entire series where I wish Kojima had shown restraint. Through the games we play as him he's quiet but clearly with depth, then at the end of MGS4 he's going off like a bad shakespeare character.

Act 3 did suck, but the rest was good. Its boss fights were well done, but yeah the B&B had no personality honestly and no real build up unlike previous bosses.

beauty and the beast unit. The robo chicks who served as bosses. Again great fights, but that lack the presence of ocolot or the end.

The cutscene to gameplay ratio felt too excessive. Act 3 in particular was awful.

As someone else said, the game falls apart after part 2.

Part 3 is shallow on rails bullshit, and part 4 is just propped up by nostalgia.

It feels like the game itself is essentially over after part 2

Nah, there were various links to the Patriots back during MGS3. Zero being a member of the SAS during WW2, and certain names and codenames associated with The Patriots in MGS2 being Allied codenames for Japanese WW2 aircraft (Raiden, Ray, etc.). Paramedic talking about Snake's genes, and cloning him. Sigint working with electronics and communications, and saying Zero has a vision for the future. The Boss having a gun called The Patriot, and at the end Eva saying she was a true patriot, and becoming a martyr-like figure to anyone who knew the full story. And so on.

You just had to connect the dots and pay attention. Read between the lines. The MGS fanbase has never been able to do that. So they assume it's an asspull any time Kojima writes with a slight amount of subtlety.

It's really weird how Kojima has this reputation for trolling the fandom, when his games contain tons of fanservice. I think this idea began circulating because of Raiden in MGS2, that whole switcheroo. But it's established that Kojima didn't really like the character, and only put him in MGS2 because Konami wanted him to, because they thought it would make the game sell more to women. The game was originally going to just have Snake. So Kojima wasn't trolling the fans, Raiden wasn't even his idea. And throughout MGS2, the writing shits over Raiden (almost literally), as if in protest against the character.

MGS4 did receive criticism upon release it was just overshadowed my hype due to the fact that it was the PS3s first real killer app and Sony fans where happy to finally have a game to justify the purchase after loosing pretty much every exclusive to the 360

MGS post 3 has been really bloated with all the Big Boss stuff, which is a lot less interesting imo

MGS4 has my favorite ending in all of media, including movies, games, books, etc. After playing a series of games in such a bleak, nihilistic setting for a decade straight, each one seeming to become more cynical, funneling its world toward a deeper free-fall into a society with no agency, no happiness, no hope...

And then, against all odds, with nothing other than grit and determination, we play Snake's final mission, from start to finish, with the constant expectation that he's going to end his own life to spare those around him as one last act of service when it's all over.

When that gunshot rang out, I dropped my controller. No game has ever made me feel that way before, or since. Fucking masterpiece.

I think it only has its full effect if the player truly loved MGS1, 2, and 3 before it, as well as all its characters. MGS4 is such an excellent culmination of all three of those games. It's legitimately amazing how satisfying it was in the end. Not even Return of the King had an ending quite as cathartic as MGS4, imo.

From a AAA game the pure spectacle and fan service the game had everything I wanted and then some. I wish in hindsight they could have had the game play of 5 with the story and set pieces of 4.
