The Cure - Disintegration
vs.
Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R
vs.
R.E.M. - Automatic for the People

Previous results can be seen here:
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_2
https://board8.fandom.com/wiki/Rank_the_Tracks_Set_3

The rules:
1. Listen to the album in full
2. Rank every track on the album
3. For the results, there will be a curve at the top of each list; two additional points between #1 and #2, and one additional point for the next two ranks. This way, the songs that really stick out to someone get an edge that is not immediately negated by someone else putting it lower. In the case of Demon Days, someone's 15th track will get 1 point, 14th 2 points, 4th 12 points, 3rd 14 points, 2nd 16 points, and 1st 19 points. For albums with greater than 15 tracks, everything ranked below #15 will be given 0 points and the scale for the top 15 will be the same as a 15-track album. For albums with more than 20 tracks, you only have to list your top 15 (with 16-20, I still like having the average rank listed)
4. If you want to include comments for individual songs, I will compile them in the results
5. The results will be posted at the beginning of the next topic
6. The deadline to vote is Sunday, September 3rd at 4:00 PM Central Time; the future week poll will close earlier, when I am putting up the next topic
7. You can sign up to be added to the user cycle (a new user will be added to the end of the current cycle as long as there are four weeks remaining) - the next person on the list will choose 3 albums which the other users will vote on for the next topic.
7a. To ensure people are being given an actual choice, the three nominated albums must be by different artists. You can otherwise stick to a similar sound or era.
7b. The tiebreaker for these polls will be whichever is listed first in the poll options - make sure to deliver the results in order of your own preference (which will hopefully have the added benefit of influencing people toward your first choice if they can't decide).
7c. I have added a tiered vote structure - the least popular album will be removed and its backup votes distributed to the other two entrants.
8. Starting with the next cycle, every four weeks will be a competitive week where those listed choose a single album to face off against others.
9. Skits and tracks under 40 seconds will be excluded from the rankings unless argued otherwise

General Album Comments

BlueCrystalTear: First listen down. I... really don't "get it." It's certainly interesting, at times extremely engaging and at others utterly murderous on my ears, though I like it more as the album goes on. There's nothing to describe it. What's noticeable is how different musically this is than the last Mike Patton album we did (FNM Angel Dust).

All this said, after my first listen, I don't know if I can rank this. Not because I hate it, but because this feels like an art rock concerto, in this case meaning a single piece of various movements lasting approximately an hour. This makes it hard to discern where one track ends and the next starts. This is one of those albums where the tracks don't work by themselves as well as they do as a cohesive unit. Albums like that are the hardest to rank and I've opted out of such works before.

Steiner: i am admiring all of your stunned silence

Giggsalot: haha for gods sake, this is the topic series that freaked out over the velvet underground, who sent for the carnival freakshow

I might play along with this for nostalgia if it were california, but this one always felt like straight up nonsense for me. have fun!

FoolFantastic: Man, that was fucking annoying (endearingly)

Sheep007: I heard California a little while ago, and enjoyed a lot of it (Air-Conditioned Nightmare is particularly great). My resultant optimism for this album was ill-considered. Disco Volante is an album of Noise, and, unfortunately, very little else. Props to it for trying something, but I didn't really enjoy it. I found myself zoning out during long sections of quiet, and during a re-listen that I deemed necessary to have a coherent ranking, I wanted to skip a fair few songs.

neonreaper: If you randomize your list and post whatever words you feel like are fun to type, thats probably the most accurate way to rank this album. I say that as a bungle fan for 30 years.

Fluttershy_Pony: I wanted something weird, experimental, and avantgarde for a change. So I got what I wanted out of this album.

Seanchan: This was a fucking weird ass album and one I did not care to listen to more than twice. If I call Lovestory "my kind of bullshit" this is the opposite end of the spectrum and decidedly NOT my kind of bullshit. Desert Search was okay but most of the rest of this was meh at best. The fucking ASMR-ness of the end of Violenza Domestica, the one that keeping swelling at the very end like it's 2001: A Space Odyssey, whatever the fuck The Bends was, actually making me rank Noises; this album was odd and all over the place, but not in ways I enjoyed. I needed a musical chaser every time I finished this.

Johnbobb: Mr. Bungle fucking rocks, dude. Am I going to put this into my general listening playlist? Of course not, but that's not how Bungle is meant to be listened to. I did listen to this album on repeat for several straight hours of data entry at work though

MaxGalactica: This album was definitely a mixed bag. There were some really cool parts in most of the tracks, but there were also some very questionable parts that made me go "Why?". The biggest examples of that is the "ASMR" section near the end of Violenza Domestica and the baby voice at the end of After School Special. Other than the questionable additions, I did enjoy it more than I expected. Lots of neat rhythms, genre experimentation, and instrumentation. I probably won't willingly go back to this album due to the weird bits, but it was definitely an experience of an album.

Steiner: Well I had fun

HBJDubs: I am not a Mr. Bungle fan at all, but I respect their contribution to the music world for trying a lot of different things. I'm all for experimental stuff, it just didn't work out for me this time (Desert Search is really great though).

neonreaper: If you listen to this and wish these crazy virtuosos would make legit attempts at making songs, their album California is tremendous. Track 2 on that album is a bit goofy but pretty much everything else is stellar imo. I was going to do California as an option on my next turn.

Biggest Fan(s): neonreaper (#2)

Biggest Fan(s): Sheep007 (#4)

Score: 68 (Average Rank: 6.67/13)
Biggest Fan(s): Fluttershy_Pony (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): neonreaper (#12)

Fluttershy_Pony: A villainous song with a deep voiced singer giving what's basically spoken word vocals? Yep, this is a collection of things I like, alright.

Score: 72 (Average Rank: 6.11/13)

Score: 79 (Average Rank: 6/13)

4. Merry Go Bye Bye (Track #12)
Score: 79 (Average Rank: 5.78/13)
Biggest Fan(s): Fluttershy_Pony (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Seanchan (#11)

Fluttershy_Pony: I was starting to worry that all of my tastes had become rather normal and dull, as though I could no longer enjoy the bizarre. Then that part starting at 3:15 hits and oh yeah, that's the good stuff... and the Heavenly choir-esque part at the end of the song that breaks through the overwhelming chaos? 10/10 song.

3. Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz (Track #8)
Score: 80 (Average Rank: 5.78/13)
Biggest Fan(s): FoolFantastic, hotdogturtle (#2)
Biggest Detractor(s): Johnbobb, HBJDubs (#11)

Fluttershy_Pony: I hate the fake ending, but the rest of the song is good enough that I can forgive it.

2. Carry Stress in the Jaw (Track #3)
Score: 86 (Average Rank: 5.67/13)
Biggest Fan(s): neonreaper, Johnbobb (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): HBJDubs (#12)

neonreaper: this is like the two best songs on the album, put into one song. The secret song cracks me up. I'd love to see the record company listening to that - "wah wah wah wah god dammit I'm pissed off". lmao.

1. Desert Search for Techno Allah (Track #4)
Score: 119 (Average Rank: 3.11/13)
Biggest Fan(s): FoolFantastic, Seanchan, MaxGalactica, HBJDubs, hotdogturtle (#1)
Biggest Detractor(s): Fluttershy_Pony (#8)

Sheep007: Its interesting trying to create what I shall politely call Desert music with the synths. Not entirely sold on the judicious nature of their Arabic usage

This must be the first time in history that I've had the lowest deviation on anything.

Regarding this album, I've never "listened to" Muse, but I think I recognize 3 of the songs just from them being played in places. So maybe I'll try this one.

Did a not first listen to this yesterday. Muse is a band I've listened to quite a bit of in the past. While Black Holes... was my introduction, I've gone backwards to enjoy Absolution and Origin of Symmetry, and forward for The Resistance. I fell away from them with The 2nd Law, which I've heard but barely remember.

Black Holes... is just a great album overall. It's big, bold, and varied, and combined with the singer's theatrical voice makes this a very fun listen.

Youd probably at least like Drones of their newer albums if you werent a fan of The 2nd Law. It leans heavier on the theatric rock side of things rather than synths.

I'll take a bit more time to decide on the album votes this week. I've wanted an excuse to listen to an R.E.M. album for quite a while now so anything by them should be an automatic vote from me, but I'm oddly drawn to Robert Smith's vocals & very tempted to go off script by voting for The Cure. Going to need another day or two to see where I wind up going here.

Just a great fucking album top to bottom. A relatively easy album to rank from the aspect that every song sounds unique and different. Also the case where something had to be first and something had to be last, so even the songs at the very bottom of my list are still damn fine.

Thinking about it now, I'm sort of surprised it took us this long to cover this album, as I'd think in style/genre and release date this would be right in an average GFAQs user's wheelhouse.

It's hard to say whether I disliked The 2nd Law or if it just hit at the wrong time, being released at a personal low point in my new music listening. There's a lot of albums in the last 10-15 years from bands I'd loved before that point that I've just not listened to (In Flames, The Killers, Muse, Metallica, etc.). At any rate, I'll try to make a point to listen to both it and Drones at some point.

There's also their last two albums after Drones too. Simulation Theory goes all-in on the dark 80's synthwave style, then Will of the People is an amalgamation of their previous styles (which reviewed horribly, but I liked most of it). Those might be worth at least a listen too if you feel up to it.

Incredible album. One of two Muse albums (the other being The Resistance) with a whopping three songs in my top 13 Muse songs (It's 13 because I have a really hard time removing three songs when trying to make a top 10). This is probably my favorite Muse album as a whole due to its consistent quality, although I do also love The Resistance a lot for its sheer ambition. Amazing guitar work, Matt Bellamy's voice is a wonder to behold, creative compositions, catchy melodies, I love everything about this album.

One thing I'd like to note is my surprise at how low people have ranked City of Delusion in particular. The acoustic guitar focus with the Arabic-style strings and chords is such a cool base and the synth buildup to the trumpet solo is one of my favorite Muse moments in general. It'd be my favorite song in the album if Map of the Problematique (my all-time favorite by Muse) weren't also here. Regardless, I'm glad we were able to cover one of my favorite bands here. Definitely worth checking out their other albums if you liked this one.

Since Madonna's stats aren't up yet (never had enough time to listen to her, but my schedule is finally freeing up), I presume I'll be able to listen to this one again in the morning. So that's what I'll do.

Well, regardless, I have a physical copy of the album and it's not on there, so I didn't rank it.
Pretty sure you need to rank Glorious if you wish to be counted. It's readily available on YouTube, among other places. Fool always ensures the track list doesn't have anything funny on it and you're the only one who's refused to rank it...

Disintegration > Automatic for the People > Rated R

I feel like the consensus on BH&R is that it's the last good Muse album, but I was a huge fan of theirs when this came out, and to me it always felt like their first bad one. this marks the point where their desire to be space-age Radiohead began to be overtaken by their desire to be space-age Queen, and I just don't vibe with that at all - everything since has been borderline horrendous to my ears.

I love Map of the Problematique (their last top tier song), and Cydonia is very fun in a brainless way, but nothing else here does much for me at all. it would feel a bit arbitrary and unfair for me to rank this in detail, so I'll leave it to the fans

(p.s. I also wouldn't have included Glorious, but what Fool says goes!)

Knights Of Cydonia
Map Of The Problematique
Glorious
Assassin
City Of Delusion
Take A Bow
Exo-Politics
Starlight
Invincible
Supermassive Black Hole
Hoodoo
Soldier's Poem

Not a big fan of Muse, except for this album which is awesome. Knights is a great karaoke song whenever the bar has it available

Drones would be a better fit here I think. That was a very well received album, both critically and with the general fanbase, especially coming after The 2nd Law which was highly divisive. But yes, since then we've had Simulation Theory, which was fine but also very different from their usual fare and understandably isn't for everyone. Then Will of the People is arguably their weakest album.

Sorry for all the delays in the results. The end of July through most of August is typically the busiest time of the year at my job (I work at a university and a big part of my job is getting all of my school's student employees into the HR system). This year has been particularly stressful because, among our four departments who are supposed to be doing the same thing for their specific employees, only one of them is actually doing so and I have to cover for the other three. Worse, my direct boss of the last six years suddenly left, so I am also expected to fill a few gaps there while we find a replacement. So, my job that is usually pretty relaxed has suddenly been rather overwhelming and the last thing I want to do when I get home is open another spreadsheet.

Also, time blindness is a huge part of my ADHD and the above issues at work have made it a lot worse. I've essentially been losing track of the days of the week and then it's suddenly the weekend and I realize I haven't actually tackled the results and I feel like garbage.

Luckily, I am now beyond the deluge of new hires, and hopefully my new ADHD meds kick in soon (I am taking a not Adderall which takes 6-8 weeks before it kicks in and I'm a tiny bit over 4 weeks in).

Muse is hard as heck to rank. Because every album has the good shit and then the really good shit. So while the songs don't blend together, it's hard to separate these two categories. Even if he sings about the Illuminati a little too much, Matt Bellamy is a rock music genius and that deserves to be said. I feel bad having some of these songs in the bottom half here!

  1. Supermassive Black Hole - Not sure why this is so polarizing. It's a super kinky song about sex, about being magnetized by an attractive tush. It's good, clean fun.
  2. Map of the Problematique
  3. Knights of Cydonia - Space cowboys! Right?
  4. Starlight
  5. Soldier's Poem - Would be lower if it was longer. This one doesn't overstay its welcome.
  6. Invincible
  7. City of Delusion - I mean this is clearly about Congress, and it is as he says. Really.
  8. Take a Bow
  9. Glorious
  10. Hoodoo
  11. Assassin
  12. Exo-Politics

Loved Drones. "Aftermath" is an underrated masterpiece - and was precisely why Bellamy hired Mutt Lange as his co-producer.

That said I hadn't heard Black Holes in forever. It was good to revisit. This is why "Muse" is synonymous with "good music." Drones is as well.

Also, Fool: Hope the new meds kick in and work wonders for you, and that your job stabilizes. (I also hope they're paying you for the extra work you're doing.)

1. Supermassive Black Hole
2. Map of the Problematique
3. Starlight Very pretty and playable song. I actually dont like how it follows on from Take a Bow, and the lyrics are ehh, but it sounds excellent enough that I can forgive it.
4. City of Delusion
5. Knights of Cydonia Its obviously good, but I dont feel like the instrumentation quite carries its own weight enough to justify the track being this long.
6. Take a Bow The buildup throughout the track is very satisfying to hear come to a crescendo.
7. Exo-Politics
8. Soldiers Poem
9. Invincible
10. Assassin
11. Glorious
12. Hoodoo

Muses lead singer has a very, very distinctive voice. I cant say that their music is something that really clicks on my end (the lyrics aren't super interesting and most of their songs don't stay with me long after I've heard them), but it sounds excellent and regardless of anything else, thats the most important part.

I'd say so, sincerely. I don't think it's trying to be a super meaningful album and of course that makes it weaker, but I also think it's okay to make things that are enjoyable but forgettable. Muse aren't gonna make it close to a list of my favourite songs or albums with any of their work, but I would rather listen to something that tries to sound good and succeeds than something that has interesting lyrics and ideas but grates on me musically, if that makes sense? Like, I mostly enjoy instrumental jazz, lo-fi and orchestral music, so lyrics usually aren't very important to me unless they really connect (which is rare). And for an example on the catchy side of things, Working on the Highway by Bruce Springsteen is in my head weeks after last listening to it, and I neither like it nor do I think it's a good song. Sometimes things stick in your head, sometimes they don't, what can I say?
