Maman
Man
Mom

The link shows you how I pronounce them. The first two are French and have to be pronounced as such, but the third one is borrowed from English. "An" is a vowel sound not present in the English language. English is quite limited when it comes to phonetics. Most English word pronunciations can be replicated in French, but not the other way around. For example, the English pronunciation of "man" is the same as pronouncing "mane" in French. "Mane" isn't a word by itself in the French language, but is nonetheless found at the end of many words like "kleptomane" and "pyromane". Notice that the "e" at the end is omitted in English. The former is pronounced the same as in English, but the latter pronounces the first syllable as "pee" instead of "pie".

Usually "mom," but I'll go with "mother" from time to time because linguistic variety is fun. Speaking in the third person, it depends on how formal the context is and I'm guessing I line up with the boundaries most people would draw in that respect (though I can't say I think about it too much).

Not really. She's just the person who gave birth to me that's it. As she isn't part of my life I'll refer to her like she's just another random person as that's all she is to me. Not even sure if she's still alive.

Depends on the context.

When talking to most people I refer to her as my mother.

When I'm talking to close friends who actually know her, I'll call her my mom.

When I'm talking to her, I usually call her "old woman" or "crone".

Could you elaborate? Never seemed weird to me to call my mom by name; it's her name. We're pretty close. I also called my grandmother by her name. That means our relationship was somehow less according to you?

I also called her mom (or mommy when I was very young) but I usually called her by name cuz it felt better for my speaking self.

Not sure how that makes a difference. I was mostly raised by my mother and grandmother, who had no issue with being called by name instead of title. From what I heard, my dad is Puerto Rican-american but never bothered to be around in my life. My mom is american, born and raised.

to some people first names are a sign of familiarity and ironically not to be used lightly, especially around elders and or authority figures

So if you're from that kind of place like say, parts of the American south or Korea, you would be conditioned not to use the given names of your parents because parents deserve the respectful mom/mother and dad/father and first names are used for peers. like how teachers expect to be called Mr or Ms/Mrs XYZ or Japanese people don't use the first names of people without a relationship built.

So it's a cultural thing. The mother/father title thing is still weird to me. You're removing the name altogether which feels like a form of distance to establish authority. It's just seems dumb. A sign of familiarity between to family members is somehow bad? At least with teachers and Japanese people you're still using a name. I had some teachers that were pretty chill and didn't mind students using their first name.

Probably depends on the setting. When were over my grandmas house, my moms calls her Ma. But when were around other people (like family), she calls her by her name. Probably because shes not the only mom around. Or something like that. Either way, she used both the word Ma and her first name

Yeah, but they'd still give you the side-eye if you used the wrong honorific. Same principle.

Most languages/cultures have some form of it. Like how French has a "familiar/affectionate" form of "you" (tu) but also a formal/plural version (vous), and you're expected to know when to use which. Most cultures for most of history have put a strong emphasis on using the proper language to establish authority/hierarchy, even if they do it in different ways.

It's really only a recent thing in the West that there's been a shift towards kids calling their parents by their first name. I rememeber when I was young and you'd hear a kid do that, and the most common reaction was mostly along the lines of "Wow, that kid's a little shit" or "Damn hippie parents, letting their kids get away with that shit, putting their kids in 'time out', or asking them 'How do you think that makes me feel?'. Those kids are going to grow up to be assholes."

Spoiler: Those kids mostly grew up to be assholes.
