Most of this stuff is usually optional. You can just mainline the story and it'll be just beating dudes up with an occasional mandatory minigame sometimes.

I have it on good authority that this took a LONG TIME to localize specifically because they wanted to mimic American-style chat as much as possible.

Their efforts definitely paid off. This was awesome. Do you know what the Japanese chat is like? Is it less wacky?

It's similar, just mostly using JP memes and their emoticons.

Yakuza has a history of putting in JAV actresses as cameos, live action shots, and even promote the games. I think it was the second game that had Kiryu doing photoshoots and you have to quickly string a sentence together with a collection of words.

I missed a lot of things in this game, it was odd. I never went spear fishing once. It probably wasn't that great. It did feel really short besides the annoying the baby sections which I kinda get. It's just not fun, once the story really picks up again it's just over. I intended to play 6 again because I felt like I must have missed a lot if side activity in a very short game.

One thing I thought though is they decided to make the side stories too ridiculous. I was fighting ghosts irl. I mean c'mon this isn't some GTA V drug induced thing.

Heh not sure how I missed it. I guess I just never went to the shore line. I really should boot up Yakuza 6 again.

Oh I will agree that it's completely possible to miss Spear Fishing as it's not labeled on the map nor introduced to you via any means other than walking up to the pier and discovering it.

Then again I've seen more than one person feel elated upon having discovered it despite that. Like they'd found something just by exploring rather than the game telling them to do it.

Ah I haven't looked at the case in a while lol.

Kinda funny you mention ghosts when Kiwami 2 and I think 0 had substories involving ghost encounters, and in one of Saejima's substories in 4 an actual kappa appears. This series has a surprising amount of weird substories considering how relatively grounded the main stories are.

OK I love Kiwami 2 and that game does get completely ridiculous but heh still 6 just felt like it had some really out there ones as opposed to just repeating the oh you bumped me now, you owe me 20,000 yen for hospital bills but I'll settle right now for 2,000 yen.

I didn't really want to spoil side stories but one of them involves literal teleportation and time travel and it is all so nonchalant. Especially as Kiryu who still thinks the internet is a new thing then

Most of the substories are non-canon I think, especially the ones where Kiryu gets laid with someone. My headcanon is only certain substories are canon, like the ones that have sequels in other games (ie:Sodachi's dojo, and Pocket Circuit Fighter).

That's fair. This game just hit some of those muh immersion moments actually I guess. I figure they had to zany it up a bit too since it was the sixth game and the end of Kiryu's adventure at the time.

More like why is 5 so high. A game that has a character that in the long run whose important story to Yakuza is "There was an adult entertainment reviewer who used to play baseball who tackled a sniper. He went to school with Daigo."

I liked this, actually. Not every character needs to be some super important yakuza guy. Even Akiyama, who isn't a yakuza, is still immediately pushed as this character that pretty much everybody knows. It was nice to have a character who was... Just some guy.

Yeah. I liked that, too. They were refreshing characters. Not that I dislike Kiryu/Majima/Saejima/etc., but it was nice to have variety.

Shinada however had really obnoxious gameplay.

Tanimura was alright. He sucked at the start but once you unlocked some of his moves, he was a lot of fun.

Shinada combat is legit the worst, I agree 100%. His story is shit, too. Which is bad because I liked his CHARACTER. But he had nothing redeeming otherwise.

Shinada's combat is ass, I agree. I still appreciated his character, though.

Shinada's gameplay is cool in concept, but it would've been real nice if his bosses weren't so resistant to grabs, or if his sturdy weapons weren't such hot garbage, or if Kamiyama didn't force you to invest money and rare materials into his shop so you could actually craft the good stuff, or if you didn't have to grind weapon levels so you could actually use the good stuff. Honestly, he's not that bad in 1v1 fights, it's mostly group battles that he struggles with. Don't even get me started on his breakthrough battle with the Komakis, that fight is legit cancer for anyone that isn't named Saejima.

I filled my inventory with Staminan Royales with Shinada and used all of them but 1 for that fight. Once they do a double team combo on you, you just have to use 1.

I never did the level breakthrough with Akiyama, but I assume he also fairs like garbage in that fight too

Akiyama was my actual least favorite character to play as in 5, which is pretty tragic considering how much I loved playing as him in 4. You need to literally equip a knife just so he can have a normal double quickstep ffs. Also shoutout to all the boss fights where you can't use his Launch Strike, which is literally his red heat gimmick.
