Thats not a loaded question, that is literally your rationale falling apart and some weird attempt to not face that and simply move on

Will you condemn Conflict for what they attempted too? Or is that just a matter of something else that requires some same level of nuance that youll say doesnt apply to Ashton or Mila?

Its a small question that really has nothing to do with Materson, but it does speak everything to how CE carries on a conversation
All I know is that I am morally superior to the Kutchers. "Isn't Conflict just as bad for accusing me of sealioning?" is a completely nonsensical question and it's hilarious that you think it proves that no one has a right to ever judge anyone's character.

Rape, murder, abuse, hate. These are not issues where it is proper to go "Everyone has different morals and nuances."

Thats not my claim or interest at all, people judge, thats fine the severity of that judgement and how it becomes a valid effort is something I am interested in though

and Id rather do it by logically taking that idea through its paces than something silly like a blanket statement

a blanket statement applied is how we wound up with opinions on Ashton and Mila that either hold
merit or dont depending on who you are
We have a duty to make blanket statements on the morality of rape and support of rapists

You have a duty to reconsider your life choices and maybe some day you'll have a right for anyone to care about your opinions.

Someone might need to check if they're being held captive by the Church of Scientology
They were letters of support for a former friend. The trial being over means that any other reasoning you might invent for why they wrote them is entirely irrelevant and only in your own mind.

I never have any expectation that anyone needs to come out and give a full-throated condemnation of a friend/family member. I used to party at a guy's house (I knew his roommate) who ended up getting busted as a teacher for either statutory rape of a student or some charges for a step before that, I don't actually remember any more. As a not famous person no one ever felt I was compelled to state for the record that I condemned his actions (which I do/did but it was sort of self-evident). But even still, it's obviously difficult to see friend/family do something bad and sometimes the requests for public comment can seem like an attempt at shaming the acquaintances of a guilty party.

But I do think that writing letters of support is an active step of defending so I still think they should be raked over the coals for this.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but this is his former girlfriend who accused him of sexual assault and spoke out against Scientology. She and her husband had two of their dogs killed afterward, most likely by Masterson or someone affiliated with the church.

No the murder was caught and apparently a serial killer who stalked her for days. He just happened to be the one to find the body first and allegedly decided not to report it.

Seriously. The least someone can do is say nothing. They don't need to personally defeat every rapist on Earth, but maybe they could just not support the rapist and call him a role model?

I agree that you aren't defending rapists. You just find it laughable or sickening that some CEople think they are high-and-mighty enough to make blanket judgments against rapists. A cultist raping people and getting his character defended is where you decided we need a lecture on nuance and moral relativity.

That was a perfect response. They explained it but didn't try to justify it. They supported the legitimacy and authority of the court and jury. Most importantly, they acknowledged that it did hurt the victim and apologized for it.

Like I said before, this still reflects poorly on them, and shouldn't be forgotten. But they don't seem like they're actually secretly awful.

They were called on as character witnesses. They described him as the person they had experienced knowing. They weren't denying his actions or claiming "he would never do such a thing." It was never an attempt to help him escape charges.

Again, it's still absolutely a bad look. They deserve more scrutiny over this, Anything they do from now on we should keep this is mind. But I don't think it's on the scale to condemn them as "just as bad."

Let's wait to see if Niesha Trout has anything to say about their statement. If she's not happy with it then maybe there's more to it.

Of course it was scripted. There are clear indicators that it was designed to minimize hurting the victim more. And also, they can't straight up publicly denounce him now. That could literally be used to declare a mistrial and get him out.

I did reread the letters, and they're really a lot worse than I thought. I've lost respect for them. Is anyone following the victim on twitter? She's still fighting for justice.

Other than saying "Writing those letters was a mistake", I don't think they can say anything to take the heat off of them. They said everything right regarding their regret about the letters becoming public and left out the part about deciding to write them while being fully aware of the conviction and the details. They say the letters weren't intended to undermine the victims but that's exactly what they do. You don't strongly emphasize how much someone hated drugs for any other reason than to refute the victims' accusations that he drugged them.

I'll be honest. I didn't look at the details surrounding the actual rape. I wanted to avoid reading such grossness when the coverup aspect was enough to convince me he was guilty. If it was a drugging that totally recontextualizes those letters. Benefit of the doubt is fading.

I'm not ready to full on cancel them but I'm not gonna defend them anymore. I'll see if there's any updates, but they don't deserve any more rationalizing that could be taken to fuel worse ideas. I mean, there are comments on articles where shitheads are still doubting the rape happened. Or they argue it's he said she said and that it shouldn't be enough to convict. Still.

I would think it's extremely weird. If it turns out your friend or family member was an evil POS who destroyed a number of lives, you don't get to go "But I love them. Please don't ruin their life." Or you do get to do that, but everyone should judge you harshly for it.

Maybe finding out someone you know is genuinely awful is hard to process, but work through it in private. Don't literally ask a judge for leniency. Don't publicly talk about their good qualities or how their heinous crimes shouldn't define them.
