It started as a techno-cyber-dystopia game, but once you left the starting city (in a car chase) and got access to the world, it becomes much more low tech. The main character is technically a blue mage-like character as he is able to absorb monster abilities. Once the main character finds his way to a town that is untouched by the cyber dystopia, he gets a job and through that job meets friends who become party members (different party members depending on his chosen profession--this changes the ending and certain other events). Eventually, the bad guys catch up with him and ruin the town, and he's forced to flee. I forget what happens after that.
PLEASE someone tell me they remember the title to this game? It was an ambitious project for just one dude, and it was obvious that he was planning a sequel.
