A fairly clear #1 but an even more clear #25! Unlike Rank the Albums 4, where American Idiot was the obvious winner, I really wasn't sure what to expect here. Trying to take away my personal biases, I thought The Black Parade could be strong, along with Ten, A Night at the Opera, and Purple Rain.

I've tried to hide the results from myself as much as possible so even I can be surprised! Of course it's hard to be completely blind when compiling the data, so I've got a pretty good idea of #1 but not sure of much after that.

Going to take a brief break before starting with #25.

Sheep007 - This was a slog and I felt kinda bored throughout. You Complete Me was alright. Everything else, I actively disliked. This was basically the only album that had a set place from first listen to submitting my list.
Seanchan - Just an aggressively boring, whatever album for me.

Can't say I'm too surprised by this one! This is one I would have pegged for bottom 3 easily.

Stabbing Westward is damn good.

I'm trying to think of what other albums nobody would have really loved, or on the other side of things, ones that nobody would have really hated. Gonna guess Night at the Opera top. I woulda guessed Darkest Days to come last and am obviously glad it did, every other album is head and shoulders above it for me. Maybe Kero Kero Bonito 24th? I don't remember who nominated it but if they didn't submit a list I don't expect it incredibly high.

Sheep007 - I listened to this for the first time at about 2am and good lord is it an acid trip. Every damn thing from Kero Kero Bonito makes me feel like my brain is going to explode. Its the singers voice: I cannot imagine anyone else in the world doing this better than this ridiculously well-enunciating half-Japanese London girl. Its brain soda, so sickeningly saccharine and child-like but pumped full of so many chemicals that I cant pronounce and will almost certainly cause me to crap myself. None of this is a negative. Who is this music aimed at? This is almost impossible to rank because it's so distinctive and full of character, but I have no desire to ever listen to it again.

Seanchan - A pop album that just didnt not click with me. I didnt enjoy the overall sound or even the singers voice really. Theres a few okay songs here but weve covered way better pop albums just this cycle alone.

oooh, Sheep007 with the correct call! Also just a hilarious write up; you did a much better job at describing my own general feelings on the album.

Stabbing Westward at last surprises me a bit, but not too much. I would've thought it would've been closer to the 20-22 range. Kero Kero Bonito at 24 sounds about right. In Flames or Bob Marley would be my guesses to show up next. Wouldn't be surprised to see Silversun Pickups show up soon either.

I'm repeating what I said during the track ranking week, but KKB sounds like one of those Disney channel sitcoms aimed at tweens/teens. Like, here's the quirky, slightly weird but cute Japanese-English girl who like to sing about her life. It's all so saccarine and G/PG that it throws me off.

Yeah, that feels like a pretty accurate depiction. I think where it differs is while tween-targeted shows would try and take themselves kinda seriously and be down-to-earth and "cool", KKB leans so hard into cutesy and childish that it hits singularity. Like, they lab-made the most adorable-sounding vocalist in the world and then gave her those lyrics to sing. If KKB kept the same style but had lyrics that are more typical of alt rock or something, I'd probably find it just as baffling but far less irritating.

Seanchan - Completely fine as background music for a videogame but not something worth actively listening to.

Seanchan - One of the few albums this cycle that Id heard before. Theres some good stuff here but I wouldnt call this my go to Incubus album.

Sheep007 - I enjoy this a surprising amount. No showstoppers, but the first two songs are bops (this feels a little bit of a light term for this sorta music but I can't think of a better descriptor). No bad songs in here, either! It's a testament to how good this album selection is that we're so far down and I still really enjoy them.

Mid? Aside from FoolFantastic's ranking, this was an album clearly not "loved" or "hated" by anyone.

Next update this evening will be a triple drop, as we've got 3 albums tied for #19...

The worst album in this batch is a 6/10 to me, so I feel like this is one of the stronger low ends we have had.

Hmm... I expect Carnavas and maybe Colony in that batch. Not sure what else, maybe xx or something a lot of people might hate like Parklife? I feel every other album will be very popular with at least a few people.

And yeah, great selection of albums overall. I think everything down to my 19th pick was decent, and it's only 23-25 that I didn't come out of my final listen with some level of fondness for.

I still think Bob Marley will show up soon, but maybe I'm underestimating how many big fans that album has.

I would've been pretty surprised to see him fall outside of the top 15, maybe even top 10 until reading your posts

He's considered the greatest artist of his genre for a reason. I can't imagine there's many other rankers that actively dislike his music but in a group this small that might still be enough to swing it

I loved Incubus' Make Yourself as a teen (still do) so it's definitely disappointing ACLOTM didn't connect with me the same way

Out of the 5 ranking cycles, this was the 2nd highest rated for me (1st was 1st). What's odd is that it has the fewest number of albums in both my top 25 and my bottom 25. A lot of stuff I generally enjoyed but didn't feel super strongly about.

Those seem like reasonable guesses to me. I'd expect Night Verses to drop soon too. Not because it's bad but because it's instrumental and I feel like those tend to have lower ceilings for something like this.

Idk, I would think that hed be close to middle of the pack for most people here. Not bad, but not a favorite either. Maybe hell be closer to 15.

Seanchan - A good album but not one Im super high on. A bit too depressing to be something Id come back to listen to very often.

Sheep007 - God, the best songs are amazing, the worst are Morrissey approaching his most obnoxious, pretentious and insipid. Balances out to an average score.

Seanchan - Some really good stuff here but then some songs that Id be very quick to want to skip over. It bounces around between lots of different sounds though, and that makes it an interesting album that has continued to stick in my head months after we did the track ranking.

Sheep007 - I just found this kinda dull. It doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, the lyrics are forgettable and the sound as a whole does nothing for me.

Sheep007 - I think this is a good album, but goes on a bit long, and there's a large selection of songs I just didn't enjoy. The structure is interesting as hell and I'd imagine very influential given when it came out. The whole thing sounds very, very modern for 1969.

Seanchan - Weve covered a few rock operas during our Rankings and Im pretty sure this one is at the bottom of the list for me. By its nature its a long album and it feels that way. I wasnt much into the theme and theres no real stand out songs for me (Pinball Wizard is merely fine).

Our first #1 ranking is dead (sorry FoolFantastic), with The Smiths coming in a little lower than I expected.

Same thought for Caroline Polachek as well.

About what I expected for The Who.

Whoa. Smiths and The Who both a lot lower than I thought, I kinda expected both nearing the top 10. I'm shocked I was the second highest Smiths ranker especially, I'm not their biggest fan but only two people having The Queen is Dead in their top half is surprising. There Is a Light in particular is an exceptional song.

Just remember that only 5 of the 8 rankers submitted song lists and only 2 (+1 person with just a couple) submitted write ups, so it's not a fully full picture. Likely some people still enjoyed those albums even though they were ranked "low".

Tommy is definitely lower than I would've expected; Pinball Wizard was actually in my initial song list and I think it was the last one to get cut

Really surprised at the reception of Caroline Polachek from this group tbh. It was pretty negative in the original topic as well. Billions in particular is a really beautiful and well-composed song.

I will say that there was only one album out of all 25 in this set that I outright disliked (which hasn't appeared yet). Everything else ranged from decent to fantastic.

Fluttershy_Pony - An absolutely stacked album with six songs in my top 25, including Slide in the number one spot if we were ordering our lists.

Sheep007 - Eh. Not a ton to the album, a few songs with dreadful vocals, and a few catchy songs. I think this is brought down by the lack of a central premise to the album that actually works for me.

Seanchan - Another oddball album from this cycle but not in a good way. Its one part some of the most iconic, well known radio rock songs of the late 90s, one part some okay filler, and then like half some completely forgettable pop-punk.

An album ranking as stratified as the source material! A ton of song support given the relatively low ranking, in that it was top 5 for most votes, most tracks, and most rankers.

Oh no Caroline Polachek haha! That's one of the frontrunners for critics' indie darling of 2023, along with boygenius's the record. Not that critics should be tastemakers, but it's entertaining to compare.

When I nominated Polachek's album, it was my favorite for the year at the time. Now it's probably only fourth or fifth. Not that it's fallen as much as better records were released in the time since (and I'm still waiting for anything to crack my all-time top 100...)

Seanchan - One of the oddest albums from this cycle but certainly memorable. At least Ive not heard anything else quite like this. ALL BLACK EVERYTHING.

Sheep007 - I think this album is the fodder line, where everything below it I kinda dislike. I can't say I enjoyed the music - I know it's intended to make me uncomfortable and it succeeded! It's just difficult to justify ranking something I would actively choose not to listen to again any higher. The idea is awesome, and some of the stories are great, but it's not for me. I'm glad I listened to it once, but the second go through it took a lot to not skip through tracks.

Seanchan - One of the surprises of the cycle. Id heard nothing from Modest Mouse aside from Float On, so I wasnt quite sure what to expect. What I got was an album thats part catchy, part weird, but generally interesting most of the way through.

Sheep007 - This might be one of the most nothing albums I've ever listened to. If I were asked to present the most basic easy-listening rock band, I would probably pick these dudes.

Another #1 gets put into deep sleep. You did get clipping higher than I expected, so congrats on that Johnbobb! With only 8 rankers, the pull of a #1 ranking is pretty strong.

Even now, I'm still not sure I ranked Modest Mouse properly for myself. Based on what I usually enjoy, it should have been closer to the bottom of the top 10, and I was going to put it there after my re-listen. For whatever reason I did ANOTHER listen (I think via car stereo) and I decided that I did have it in the right spot...I think...

Maaaaaaan I was hoping it would crack the top 10 but I'm glad people at least found clipping interesting!

My all time favorite rap group (hard to call it that, it's a group with one rapper and two producers)

My guess for 11-15 in no particular order would be Bob Marley, In Flames, Night Verses, SOPHIE, and The xx.

Modest Mouse made me very irritated and I don't know why because I didn't hate the songs at all. I think it's so inoffensive it loops back to being offensive to me. I had a very long ramble about it that took my list from two PMs to three, so I decided to cut it for my own sanity and won't be repeating it all for the same reason. I'm kinda curious about Float On's hit single status; I probably heard it tens of times in my life since I grew up with my dad listening to typical rock stations every day around the time it released. Yet I couldn't remember a note from the song the second my listens for this project finished, even though I found it pleasant enough. And I definitely didn't remember hearing it before this, either.

clipping is very cool and I'm a lil sad I just don't vibe with the sound at all. Wish I coulda justified putting it higher because I think it's more interesting than everything up to about the halfway point of my list.

It's pretty much just Prince, Queen, MCR, Pearl Jam and Gorillaz I can't see dropping before the top 10. I can see basically anything else in spots 11-15. Max probably isn't too far off, but I still kinda expect Blur or Carnavas before Bob Marley? Although I also assume it's their lowest remaining score so idk

Blur and Carnavas wouldve been my next two had I listed 7. Maybe SOPHIE ends up higher, but I also feel like she might be the most polarizing out of all 25 albums.

If you like the vibe of clipping. but not so much the smaller, more experimental tracks, I'd recommend checking out their later albums. They're more horror-themed than sci-fi but they're more like traditional albums rather than concept albums

Visions of Bodies Being Burned would have been quite a bit higher on my list.

Seanchan - I kind of feel bad for putting my own nomination in my top spot but this is an album I still continue to come back to many years after originally hearing it. In retrospect, Clayman would have been a better choice to cover but I needed to share my love of the final song, Man Made God. It was the runaway group favorite, which was nice to see, though I suspect a lot of that had to do with the lack of vocals, allowing you to focus on the best part of In Flames, the awesome metal instrumentation.

Fluttershy_Pony - I dismissed this album when we originally covered it, but I'm apparently more in the mood for this type of metal as I find this to be pretty good at the moment. No songs that I love, but still an enjoyable listen that deserved better than I gave it.

Sheep007 - One song is great, and everything else is just pretty standard-feeling metal. Doesn't feel like it deserves to be this low but I didn't enjoy it enough to justify anything else.

At last, my #1 goes down...in flames... Honestly surprised it lasted this long! In some ways it proves how good In Flames are, that they could get even this high despite the raspy, sometimes unintelligible vocals.

I like In Flames but definitely not as much as I did when I was a teenager. Definitely surprised to see them avoid the bottom 10 but it's not an unpleasant surprise.

Seanchan - A really solid instrumental metal album. My issue is that it is a bit long and all kinds of gloms together in your mind. In many ways, you could just listen to Phoenix IV: Levitation, a 9 minute song, and get everything that you need.

Sheep007 - I enjoyed this quite a bit. I think what keeps it down here is that there's not a ton that sticks in my head or that I feel the need to listen to again. As a collective, it's a great concept and executed well, it just doesn't go above and beyond in an exceptional selection of albums.

Knew this one had to be coming up soon, as I was expecting it more towards the late teens.

Never heard of this one, sounds sick though.

It's pretty good, but maybe don't bother with anything else from Night Verses. After enjoying it, I dabbled in some of their other albums, which are not wholly instrumental, and the vocals and singing left a lot to be desired.

Seanchan - A little bit of a surprise. The singles in the 2nd half Ive heard a million times before, but even the first half is really solid and just kind of a fun listen.
