I didn't dislike the Marley album, it just didn't really stand out to me. I do think this is more an indication of how much I liked everything in this album set than how little I like Bob Marley though.

Sheep007 - This is my jam. I don't think there's much exceptional on this album, but the whole thing is a relaxing, mellow journey.

Seanchan - Theres aslightnessto this album that belies how sneaky enjoyable it is. Some nice little instrumental bits but it works because theres just a great interplay between the two singers. This one jumped a few spots on relisten.

Sheep007 - I'm a sucker for a Damon Albarn album and Parklife is excellent (probably elevated by my growing up in Britain). The irritating, catchy quality that almost every song has hits the exact right spot in my brain, and the overexaggerated Britishness of 90s Britpop is perfectly encapsulated in this album. I did feel it tailed off at the end, but overall, a very fun listen.

Seanchan - Aside from Boys & Girls, its crazy how this album just completely did not leave any impression on me. Even on a relisten I just wasnt feeling this one very much.

I'd say the biggest surprises there are SOPHIE, Sabaton, and Silversun Pickups, so I'm expecting they'll be the next ones to fall.

Coincidentally, those are also the 3 lowest ranked left for raw votes for "Songs of the Cycle". The other 7 are all among the top 8. (The other album, that already dropped, was Dizzy Up the Girl.)

Based on that, and as you might expect, there's a pretty strong correlation between the album rankings and the albums with the most "Songs of the Cycle". It's not a full picture, as not all rankers submitted, but all albums from 11-25 had only 2 or less rankers pick a song from them except for Parklife and Exodus. Among the top 10 albums, all except 2 had 3 or more rankers picking their songs.

Fluttershy_Pony - I love the experience of this album, though I only enjoy it as a complete package--while it's my top album, it doesn't have a single song in my top 25 because I feel every track needs the emotional context of the other songs to resonate in a meaningful way.

Sheep007 - I respect this album a lot, and lyrically it's pretty good, thematically, it's interesting as hell. Do I enjoy most of it? Not really. Ponyboy might be the most grating individual track on the entire list.

Seanchan - A little bit too harsh and odd for my tastes. Immaterial remains a fun listen though.

Fluttershy_Pony's #1 drops at a very respectable 10th place, considering the vote was very much "love" or "hate" (relatively speaking).

Really cool album. I regret not putting it a little higher but I think one more listen of Ponyboy would have made me snap for good. Even if, as with clipping, I recognise that's kinda the point.

Ponyboy almost hit my top 25.

As far as predictions go, Silversun Pickups and Sabaton sound about right for the next two to drop. Then I'm thinking Gorillaz and Queen will be the next ones to go.

I agree on those next two, but then I think it could be anything anywhere til the end. Very hard to predict.

Queen in particular feels like an album that will have a lot of songs picked in people's songs of the cycle, but ranked slightly lower as a whole.

Seanchan - Theres something about the overall vibe and sound of this rock album that I enjoyed more than I expected to. On a relisten there was just a lot of oh yeah, I like this song too, with Lazy Eye in particular being a real stand out.

Sheep007 - Solid, but nothing exceptional. This is pretty much the baseline for decent albums, and there were a few songs that made me perk my head up and go "yeah, that's not bad", but I can't justify it being above anything else.

I do feel on reflection I was a bit harsh on this one, too, and it shoulda been 16th. It had far higher lows than the chunk of albums directly above it, but I think it was kinda brought down in my mind by the fact they each had a standout song that stayed with me more than anything from Carnavas.

Seanchan - A metal album steeped deeply in the stories of World War 1. Theres no singular stand out tracks for me but I enjoyed this one overall, as its got a nice synergy between the instrumentation and the singers vocals.

Sheep007 - Historical metal is fun as hell, (good) power metal is fun as hell, solid album overall.

As somewhat anticipated, Sabaton exceeds (my) expectations and lands at #8. It's also the first album in the ranking to have 5 top 10 votes.

Sheep007 - Simply a gorgeous album throughout. Two of my favourite songs full-stop are on this album, and it's tied together with amazing theming and a lot of variety in the tracks. I don't love all of them, but they're never boring, and the beauty of the top two is practically unmatched.

Seanchan - Overall kind of a weird album that bounces around a lot in terms of its sound. Theres stuff here that I enjoyed but then other parts Id rather skip over.

We'll have to talk Sheep007 down from melancholy hill, after his #1 falls just short of a top 5 ranking.

A dead heat between Queen and Gorillaz, though in a head to head matchup, 6 of the 8 rankers had A Night at the Opera > Plastic Beach.

As you'd expect, Bohemian Rhapsody, a very popular song. Though not singularly the most popular, as two other songs (yet to be revealed) tied for the most rankers.

Alright, here's my guess for top 5 (in order):

1. Pearl Jam
2. Grimes
3. My Chemical Romance
4. Prince
5. CRJ

And I'm thinking the two most popular songs are Welcome to the Black Parade and Run Away With Me. Although I'm pretty surprised Bohemian Rhapsody didn't get all 5 voters.

Oh dear... Thought they'd both be higher than that, honestly. Especially Night at the Opera.

Plastic Beach got first for me primarily based on how cohesive it is while still feeling distinct in every song. Plus Melancholy Hill and Empire Ants, which are, as I said, gorgeous. Empire Ants is probably in my top three songs of the cycle, along with Bohemian Rhapsody and an unnamed song which I expect to drop shortly.

Sorry, Queen's just one of those bands that I never really connected with. I know they're very talented and I've tried to get into their music since they seem like the literal definition of things I like, but they're just... fine? I don't dislike their music, but I'm not sure I'd really say I like any of the tracks I've heard? There's several that I kinda like, but... yeah.

(The Who and The Doors are also in that sort of "popular late 60s & 70s classic rock music that I'm just not into" category.)

I'm surprised my low score didn't tank Night At The Opera; I expected the "average without outliers" score would go up, but it'd still wind up in the same place. That's kinda neat.

Sheep007 - Holy crap. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this so much. The first half of the album is a near-perfect collection of pop songs, and the second half isn't quite as good, but I really don't care. There's not a single song that isn't fun and wouldn't fit on a summery playlist.

MaxGalactica might have really, really, really, really, really, really liked this album, but his fellow rankers keep his #1 off the podium places. I'll say that on my album ranking re-listen this was one that I immediately knew I had to move up higher because it's such a fun listen, especially when you can sing along in your car...

With the second most song votes and the most individual songs (with the caveat that it was one of the longer by number of songs), I expected this one might have had a little more gas left in the tank.

Oh yeah, and Max spot on with the #5 prediction and about Run Away With Me!

I'll take fifth any day. Nice to see the more positive reception to Emotion.

Sheep007 - Another sizable chunk of personal favourite songs for me - an album with no skips on repeat listens. Just misses out on top spot because the central premise is narrowly weaker, but it was a close call.

Seanchan - Ive a soft spot for good, catchy pop punk, and thats precisely what The Black Parade is. Theres some dark themes here about death but for me its the sing-song choruses of Dead!, Welcome to the Black Parade, and I Dont Love You that stick with me. Its not a flawless album, as the front half is stronger than the back, but the highs here are damn great.

Sheep007 - Y'all know what the best song is from this album, and it's one of the best of all time. Everything else is obviously good, but for me it doesn't all come together as much as the few better albums. Not a bad song, though. I think it'd be enhanced if I watched the movie, and I was considering it but ultimately didn't get the chance.

Seanchan - A good album but not one Im super high on. Some good singles but then some songs Id rather skip over on replay.

Prince with the bronze medal finish. Somewhat bizarrely, this album has the highest low score so far (16) but also the lowest high score (4) since #14 (Exodus).

I feel kinda bad that the one album I put up for nomination was ranked last. I actually hadn't listened to it in many years, and even I agree it wasn't that great outside of a couple of songs. Either of the other two albums I nominated that cycle probably would have gone over better, at least on account of them being much more tightly paced, but that's hindsight for you.

My 2 and 5 as the last two is pretty good. Still sticking with my initial prediction on it.

Also the best song in the album is Purple Rain bar none.

Well, those are the two albums from the top 7 that I actively didn't want to see win once we were there. Kind of a disappointing end result, although I did enjoy #9 well enough.

Also, I find it very funny that I hyped up When Doves Cry only to see it not even top the songs of the cycle for its own album.

Seanchan - I feel like my ranking for Ten is based more on objectively recognizing this as a good album more so that subjectively loving it. Which is a weird thing to say but Ive just never been a big fan of any of Pearl Jams singles. Like, theyre good songs but not something Id seek out.

Sheep007 - I like the best song on this album a ton! Everything else? It's alright. It all kinda blends together, and it's weird I don't like this one when I enjoy a sizeable portion of grunge. Probably the most disappointing album on this list, although I still found it decent.

Seanchan - Theres some really, really great songs here, ones that Ive continued to come back to many times, Venus Fly and Butterfly in particular, despite them not being at the top of my original track rankings. On the other hand, theres some low points that bring the album down a bit. Overall though, I enjoyed this one quite a lot.

Sheep007 - A few songs here absolutely blew me away. A few irritated me, especially lyrically. Lots of style and character in this one, and I think if I actually liked Grimes' personality rather than wincing at it I'd have it even higher as a result. Overall a blast that never once bored me.

Congratulations to Grimes, for Art Angels winning Rank the Albums 5!!!

Lets call this for what it is, a bit of an upset. Ten was the only album with two #1 rankings (neonreaper and HBJDubs), while Art Angels actually had none. On the other hand, Art Angels had the highest low ranking (14) of any album. Plus, it dominated Songs of the Cycle with 16 votes, along with being the only album represented by all 5 people who submitted a song list.

I was not expecting Grimes to win the whole thing at any stage! Ten definitely would have been a letdown of a winner, for me, and I'm glad that the album I enjoyed more won. Still bemused as to why I didn't like Pearl Jam. I've listened to that album three times since the start of this project in the hopes it'll click, but nothing.

Thanks for hosting, Seanchan! This was a lot of fun to participate in and got me to think about music in more depth than I have in the past as well as listen to albums I never would otherwise.

Btw, I voted for Even Flow for Songs of the Cycle, not Alive.

Definitely a bit surprised that Grimes took it all, but not too much considering it had pretty universal praise amongst this group (except for SCREAM, but we don't talk about that). As I mentioned during the unveiling, there was (as you might expect) a pretty strong correlation between the album ranking and the number of song votes that an album received.

The biggest outlier was Dizzy Up the Girl, which had the 3rd highest song votes but only managed 18th for the album. Desire, I Want to Turn Into You, Splendor & Misery, and Bonito Generation were others where song votes strongly outperformed album ranking.

On the other side, Night Verses was the album with the highest rank but not a lot of song support. Ten, Carnavas, Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides, The War to End All Wars, xx, and Good News for People Who Love Bad News were the next tier where the album ranked higher than the number of song votes.

...Of course this data can be skewed by 1 ranker selecting many 5-6 songs from an individual album, so take that with a grain of salt!

Well, those are the two albums from the top 7 that I actively didn't want to see win once we were there. Kind of a disappointing end result, although I did enjoy #9 well enough.

Also, I find it very funny that I hyped up When Doves Cry only to see it not even top the songs of the cycle for its own album.

It is pretty neat how many of us share responsibility for that album being included.

If you hadn't given it to me at that topic, I wouldn't have known that I liked it enough to renominate it after it lost its first week.

If Zazi hadn't nominated it originally, I don't know that I would have thought about nominating it myself.

If FoolFantastic (and I think some other people?) weren't so disappointed by the album losing its first week, I wouldn't have known just how popular it was here.

So.. that's kinda fun. I also feel a bit vindicated that my plan to renominate some albums that failed to get selected finally paid off; my first attempt at that, The Ataris album, got last place at its Rank the Albums topic (IIRC). So it's certainly interesting and unexpected that it turned out so much better this time (even if, as mentioned, there was certainly some discussion about Art Angels' popularity before hand).
