Ha, I've seen let's players react to the prologue and it's funny seeing their reactions knowing what's coming. In that first post with the comment on Nagito? I laughed.

Everyone met up at weird Hope's Peak ruin after the game made not so subtle hints that Jabberwock Island is not what it seems. And the motive is a fangame? Hajime snuck out to play it, but I don't entirely get how it's supposed to drive anyone to murder yet.

So we've gotten roped into helping Kazuichi stalk Genocide Jack fangirl Sonia, and pretty much every other girl too. I guess he's not Teruteru level, but not a big fan of the pink-haired doofus.

Every other case is fire though

People complain about the gravel in the swimsuit thing, but whatever. My real issue is that we're spending time at all solving the video game murder when it LITERALLY doesn't matter. The only important thing is that Kuzuryu's sister got murdered, he killed a girl and Mahiru was sort of kind of possibly in on it so he has motive against her.

This is established in like the first 5 minutes of talking about the game at the trial, but for some reason you spend like an hour unraveling the whole thing. I've played the game three times and this is the part I stop my replays for like a week until I just rip the bandaid off.

Chapter 2 is bad, but it has one of the best after trial scenes and execution in the game. That's how I like to think about it. A clumsy path to a spectacular end.

Though they still felt more involved in the game to this point than say... Sonia.

She has done nothing beyond get creeped on by creepers. I almost forgot about Princess Nirvana during the last class trial. I think she had one line until like the Sparkling Justice part.

That first death actually got me invested in this series. The dichotomy between how that character acted in life to how they died just...sucked.

Also, on to this point I was watching this game on a let's play. They actually paused on death 1. It was a huge cliffhanger, and it's all comments could talk about.

This case doesn't really make a lot of sense, so I'm interested to see how the trial plays out.

And I know the two-kill rule was in D1, but weird how they talk about this being an "imitation murder" based on Monokuma's movie that had 3 killings. Yet he lets them know the blackened can only kill two, long after they would have had time to kill 3. I guess it's another red herring.

I don't think I liked trial 3. It was obvious from the start because of how Mikan was talking, and it was convoluted as hell. The time window seems impossible and Despair Disease was so stupid. Mikan caught the Remembering Disease and remembered she was crazy and full of despair before she lost her memories? I don't feel sad about that like I did Peko's reveal and backstory. Peko wasn't part of a plot to destroy the world. Mikan is much more of a betrayal.

But at least now we have ROBOT NEKOMARU!!

By the end of the game I appreciated the third case a little more, but yeah it didn't leave a great impression.

They barely even talked about Hiyoko's death in the goddamn trial. I didn't exactly like the girl, but what the hell was that?

"Yeah she must have seen Mikan plotting and gotten her throat slit! Whatever!" By what? Where exactly in the music venue? Did sick Ibuki help Mikan create the trap before she was strangled? Is that how she got blood on her slippers?

I admit, I didn't see this murderer coming. Yeah, in hindsight it's obvious, but I actually was endeared to Mikan at the time. I'll give this trial credit for one thing--I felt betrayed. Sometimes I even wonder if the point of this trial was to make the player feel bad. We lost three characters of varying likability with a bad execution and an ending the resolves nothing. Or, it's just badly written I don't know.

Also, and this is actually an often mentioned point, but apparently Fuyuhiko was meant to be the death in this chapter but was replaced with Hiyoko. I'd like to think that explains some of the flaws in this chapter, like how we never focused on a murder weapon for Hiyoko's death. In the original plan, Mikan probably would have just exploited Fuyuhiko's wounds to kill him.

I see a lot of people call 2-3 the worst trial not just in the game but in the entire series, and I just don't get it. For me, it's probably the most memorable one of all, in a good way. I do think the despair disease was kind of weak as a motive, and the lack of focus on Hiyoko as a victim definitely hurt as well.

But I think it does a really good job at raising the stakes and instilling that ever-important feeling of despair. The group separation really makes it feel like the hospital group is truly isolated, the apparent suicide video is super chilling, the choice of victims and murderer is heart-wrenching, and the reveal of what exactly happened leaves some major questions you don't feel like you want the answers to.

My opinion is probably colored a bit by the fact that Mikan and Hiyoko were my most and least favorite character respectively. So it really threw me off to see the latter get killed off right when she was starting to improve while the former did it without even having a real reason. Like, you wouldn't be surprised if Mikan finally snapped and killed Hiyoko as a result of all the bullying...so it was a surprise that, not only was the bullying not a factor at all, Hiyoko wasn't even intended to be a victim.

...uh, whoops, I'm rambling a bit! The point is, I feel like it's a lot better than people give it credit for because it does a better job than any other case at what these murders are "supposed" to do: make you feel despair.
