I've played UDG, but when I say franchise I mean the games. I have no interest in the anime.

Akane's issue is that she was originally planned to be the rival character but then they created Komaeda and Akane had nothing to do after that so she's just kinda there.

Her defining characteristics are set in stone in the first chapter and never change. She has big boobs, she likes eating a lot, she's an idiot who just wants to fight everything and her language around sex-related issues is unfiltered. Her role in the story consists mostly of doing stupid things and having no comprehension or growth about it. After the Nekomaru thing you find her in the restaurant crying about it and I was thinking that at least that was something, but no, that was just the despair disease. When Fuyuhiko dragged her aside in the Funhouse for a heartfelt one-on-one she had no comprehension of what he was saying. Her airheadedness isn't necessarily a deathblow in itself, but the fact that she makes it that far in the story without going through something that affects her and contributes next to nothing to the cases is a problem. It very much has the feeling of a "wasted slot". In the first game Aoi did a lot more to earn her ditzy inclusion in the survivors. Additionally, Sonia is also a bit of an airhead so that role is already covered in the surviving set of characters while she does more to earn her spot. It also means that doubling up on the airhead role in the finale means the remaining characters have to pull a lot more weight. Fortunately the finale of the game is more focused on Hajime and Junko so it kind of gets away with it.

Looking at it again, I'd maybe swap Sonia and Akane around in my rankings, but idk I liked Akane. I liked Hina and Hiro more as dumb/airhead characters, but I enjoy her too.

I need to do a DR1 ranking, but I think DR2 has a deeper roster overall. It's close.

Akane is a mixed bag. On the one hand, she's a strong woman who quirky and funny, and maybe her fanservice elements aren't a turn off for you. On the other hand, yes she's a character that lacks a real story arc or character development despite going through the whole game. It really feels like she's just there sometimes. I think how much you like her depends on how you feel about her shtick.

I'll say that I probably put more stock in design when evaluating characters than most. Hajime aside, I think my top 5 (so top 4?) is easily the best character designs in the game, with Tsumiki being a clear winner. It's so sleek, it perfectly encapsulates her. Her skillset and also her clumsiness. I love the hair. She also by far has the best sprites in the game. It's perfection. But genuinely I think she's funny and interesting to listen to and her character dynamic with other people than Hiyoko, as little of it as there is is great. The Hiyoko thing is also funny. Hiyoko is funny. that's just a disrespected fact. I'm also a sucker for when characters actually use their talents in the game rather than it just being a backstory/personality thing, which happens way too rarely, but Tsumiki gets it on with that.

I'm not really a fan of the fanservice involving her. I don't hate it and think it diminishes anything, but it's not why I like her.

I haven't seen her free time events. Also Bernadetta can't be the worst when Caspar and Raphael exists.

Even from a design perspective, Mikan sucks. Akane's design is way way better

Full disclosure, Toko and Mukuro in particular got huge boosts from UDG and If respectively. I probably wouldn't rate either of them in even the top half going on DR1 alone~

He sees development. I just think he's a good shit-stirrer and rival, even if he did do that one thing in Chapter 2. Like Nagito, I sort of hate him, but like him being there. I could maybe drop him a few spots. My top 3 clear and then there's some flexibility.

I've already played Zero Escape and AI The Somnium Files.

Well, there's Ace Attorney which often get compared, but it's really entirely for the trial aspect. Otherwise its not very similar. There's Master Detective Archive: Rain Code, which came out this year by Kodaka (the creator of Danganronpa), which in some ways is kind of a spiritual successor, but in a lot of other ways plays more like Ace Attorney as well.

Haven't played it myself yet and it's still in early access, but I've heard that Your Turn To Die is worth checking out.

I second this one. The tone and style feels much more like Zero Escape, but the "main game" segments are basically class trials. It was worth the time I put into it, and I'm looking forward to the rest of it~

Gundham and Chiaki are best, also I am ok with characters that just are nice and somewhat normal like Ibuki, Sonia, Mahiru, Kazuichi, Akane is a bit too reduced to training and eating.

Bernie has her opportunity to mellow out and doesn't freak out as often in part 2 of Three Houses. Mikan doesn't even have that.
