So long as the plot is more involved than like "go place do thing" like really shit ones and the combat is turned base so I can multitask I'm good

Just really bored atm

I might go back to that but tbh I found all the terminology drops and the in media res naming it hard to follow who is who and what is what

Had basically zero idea what was going on in the prologue

is the plot ever a focus in those type of games?

they have to have "expansions" to keep the gacha train forever rolling which means they're non-literally making shit up as they go along.

To an extent it usually is. It's just that they are garbage plots. Even the best one I can think of, Opera Omnia, is mostly only good because of the original, non-gacha games.

No. They have a ton of story stages to give you content but the main draw is A)The licensed property or B)The horny. Sometimes both.

I liked the story in Final Fantasy Brave Exvius back when I played it. Gacha games are money pits though, so I try to avoid them now.

Wrong.

The plot is usually the focus but the plot is also usually horrible. It's very rare to find a gacha that actually has a well written plot. And when you do find it god knows if they'll ever finish it or not.

Guardian Tales has got probably one of the best stories among video games but it can be a real slog in the early levels as you grind up your characters to endgame competency. You can get it on Nintendo Switch if you don't like phone games.

Fate grand order is basically a visual novel with some turn based gameplay tacked on, the story is the primary reason for playing.

really previous game knowledge isn't required at all to get into it, its at least not relevant to the plot so far

The game does get around to telling you more about what is going on as you progress the plot

Star rail is surprisingly good but I do know what you mean by it being initially overwhelming with the lore and setting. Reading the notes/books you can find throughout the levels helps but you can pick up enough just from the dialogue and quests to get a good enough handle on it.

100

It's not really an RPG, but the battle system is turn-based (your team goes first, then the enemy, wash and repeat). Still some strategy down the line since the bosses (story and event, of which there are numerous) can be downright brutal to the uninitiated, even to people that have really good units.

As the quoted poster said though, the story is its strength. It's not transformative like Shakespeare (lol) or anything, but it's much better developed than I'd have anticipated for this kind of game, even with my familiarity with the visual novel that started the franchise (Fate/Stay Night).

Granblue, with the caveat that the actual decent writing is in the side/event stories and character fates much more than it is in the main plot (though that has its moments, mostly in act 2).

Then Opera Omnia. It has a good enough story that people tried to play Type 0 due to just how compelling it is.

I'll second FF Opera Omnia.

It's probably one of the least scummy gacha games I've ever played. They throw tons of currency at you and if you're not trying to pull on every. single. banner, you'll easily get enough to get a few decent characters. Not to mention they quite frequently offer free pulls on new banners + have monthly events where you get a bunch of free stuff.

Ever try Another Eden? For a game that was free there was quite a lot you could to do. Also just by completing quests you could get the premium currency to do your "character/waifu slot machine." I probably only played like 10 percent of the content, and maybe the game is dead now, but thought it was solid for what it was. Never spent a single dollar and felt like I still had some good characters. Sure I got some 4/5 star stuff too.

I'm surprised that I'm the only one that recommended Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. I thought the story in the first 2 seasons were great (I'm sure the other seasons are good too, but I stopped playing after 2). You try to stop a mysterious group of villains with lots of twists and turns. I felt like it could have been a good story for a console FF game.

I guess I should specify one more thing ; I prefer character gacha since wondering what characters I'll get is half the "fun" such as it is

They do have a character gacha now?

Tried both Another Eden and Brave Exvius and had fun for a time; any of those Korean anime turn based ones that's adequate to try a bit? I've killed some time o na couple of those.

Ok so it's not turn based but it's got a very robust auto mode, I'll recommend Counterside. You can still easily multitask. Story is decent too.

Pretty sure there's a pause feature as well but when I played I'd literally just start the battle and put the game down and did something else for 90 seconds.

Can't do it in pvp obviously.

Sorry, I meant weapons for the characters, lol.

It's a force of habit to say characters when referring to banners.

Yeah, there is a pause feature, and it had a story that I actually enjoyed which is a rarity for me, since 99% of the time I couldnt care less about story, gacha or not.

I dropped the game after their V-tuber collab though. Other regions got actual playable characters from Guilty Gear and Code Geass for collabs global got skins of V-tubers. And you had to pay $36 for a single skin. You could get one random one for free during the event if you were lucky (I wasnt lucky which contributed to my decision to stop playing).

War of the Visions is another rare game with a story I like, and unlike Counterside, its turn-based. Plus they dont stiff global on collabs. They have had collabs with Dragon Quest, Nier, Tomb Raider, Fullmetal Alchemist, Addison Rae, Persona 5, and of course, basically every other FF game. And since FFBE is getting a Parasite Eve collab, chances are good that Aya will make it to WotV as well. Also they rerun collabs so you dont need to worry about missing anyone permanently. Im patiently waiting for 2B to come back :3
