I don't have too many thoughts about this episode. Yeah we have Thrawn and Ezra back, but I just find it hard to get worked up for it all.

Captain Enoch (the gold-faced Stormtrooper) is rad as hell, and it's lovely to see Bearded Ezra again. Thrawn is amazing, even putting aside the cartoon versions, this is how I always pictured him going back to when I first read Heir to the Empire.

The real interesting bits we've gotten this ep were the bits of worldbuilding. The Witch Kingdom of the Dathomiri, the fact that Baylon is not interested at all in Thrawn and is pursuing his own agenda looking for something that calls to him.

Interested in seeing how it all ties up in the next few eps (or where it leaves off, rather)

Probably my favorite episode so far, it was just alright, but at least the plot moved along this episode at a reasonable pace. Thrawn seems pretty great so far, I never watched Rebels (I heard he was a bit of a cartoon villain buffoon tho) here at least he seems just like the cold calculated genius he is in the original books.

A bit nitpicky and I know Disney threw all the EU Old Republic canon out the window, but I dont really like Balons speech about the Jedi rising then falling then rising and falling over and over again. Obi Wan says the Jedi protected the Old Republic for a thousand generations. And its always been portrayed that the Sith empire keeps coming back, but they never succeed in beating the Jedi.

It also always made Palpatine and the Empire this time around a little more special, and taking them down more special, because Palpatine actually succeeded in destroying the Jedi and the Republic (unlike the Sith who have tried for a thousand generations before).

OMG my favorite part of this eppy is when the droid said the THING! A long time ago in a galaxy far far away I marked out hard, I don't think that line's ever been spoken in a Star Wars movie before let alone speaking a Star Wars title in a movie.

This was a pretty cool episode.

I'm wondering the implications of this new galaxy. Has it ever been brought up before? Is the implication, through everything and Huyang's "a long time ago" for his "History of the Galaxy" stories, that this is where the people of the Star Wars galaxy originated?

Lots of tantalizing implications here. I knew Baylan wasn't just after Thrawn, but now I really want to know what he's after.

Shin is talking a lot, and it's nice to see her relationship with her master develop some more. She seems a lot less "dark side" after this episode. She's still a top candidate in my mind for redemption of some kind, but maybe otherwise she'll be the one who comes into this ancient power they're seeking (she was trained to be "more than a jedi" after all)

Thrawn looks and sounds good, Ezra looks good, crab people rule, rat-dog rules, lots of things in this episode were cool.

Given how bad the stories for some of the new Star Wars have been, the Yuuzhan Vong being introduced can only make it better.

Hell, they just went to another galaxy. Whose to say that it's not where the Yuuzhan Vong originate, and now aware of this other galaxy decide to pick up their shit and head off to conquer it?

I absolutely adore the busted look of Thrawn's destroyer and his troopers.
This episode perfectly encapsulated why I prefer Star Wars to Star Trek. The cute little hermit crab aliens that don't look like humans with some prosthetics glued to their face and the technology that doesn't look like it came out of an Apple store just yesterday.

Yes, I will say I was really taken in by the designs of Thrawn's busted soldiers and the Chimaera.

I can't imagine what he must have gone through to keep them in line collectively. Like sure there's the military training and his own charisma, but ten years in one location for such a sizeable group is a LONG TIME.

Judging by the fact they were just randomly chanting his name as if they themselves had been waiting for him for a decade I'd say cult-like tactics were the main tool.

I really liked this one. Across all of the Disney Plus shows, this episode felt the most like original Star Wars to me.

This is also the first episode of Ashoka that feels like it has real story momentum instead of just being a series of cool (and not as cool) moments. I am looking forward to next week.

My thinking is one of two things

Or both

They're basically an army held together by Nightsister dark magic. Most are undead flesh puppets like Marok.

Or they're real and Thrawn kept them alive and fed for a decade without any sort of backup or supply line. That's bound to inspire some sort of fanatic loyalty.

I'm with the latter idea. I think it speaks better to the threat of Thrawn if he was able to manage them all on his own without magick.

I honestly think the Vong are the single worst thing to ever exist in Star Wars lore, EU or otherwise. It's incredible that anybody actually speaks in favor of them existing lol

I just feel the need to push back against any and all suggestion that they can or should exist, because they can't and shouldn't.

The Vong were renamed the Grysk in the new canon and are already back as some new galactic threat that Thrawn and his people have been fighting for millennia.

I'm always shocked when I see it too, I have just started to assume it must be an age thing. Where I was reading the EU as it came out as I was a teen and by time New Jedi Order rolled around with the Vong I was around 20, but it was the point where I gave up after a few books because they were not good to me at least any more.

I'm working my way through the old EU now, haven't gotten to the New Jedi Order yet, but I wonder why the Vong are polarizing. Is it because they are so alien and so not like a traditional Star Wars species (existing outside the Force and what not)?

I was only about 12 when I read the first few books in the NJO series, and I never bought more. Then, a few years later when I was 19 or 20, I discovered that my college library had a bunch of the Star Wars novels in the shelf. I made it a habit to check one out every so often, and read further into the series.

It got worse and worse lol

Honestly, it's not just the poorly justified force immunity, the extremely edgy masochism, or even the gross organic ships they fly.

The thing I hate the most about them is the fact that they came along and decimated the galaxy whose story I grew up loving more than anything in the world.

These edgelord EU writers ultimately thought it was a good idea to let their Star Trek reject fanfiction species ravage the galaxy virtually unopposed and kill 365 trillion people. That's an insanely high number, definitely chosen for edgy shock value, and I fucking hate it.

The best part about him is the way Claudia Gray uses her narrative style and the characters' perspective to kind of make a bit of an in-joke whether or not Geode is actually just "a rock". Like the character is noted in the narrative to have done stuff, but whenever he's in the scene, he just acts like a regular rock.

I have a bad feeling the crab people are gonna get slaughtered by the bandits Skoll seems to be temporarily recruiting. Then Sabine has to explain how exactly she got to that galaxy and Ezra rightfully getting annoyed that his sacrifice meant almost nothing.

The show is making it really difficult for me to root for Sabine.

Im glad we have Ezra and Thrawn setup on the board now and hopefully this leads to a good conclusion of the series. But I was also pretty underwhelmed by Ezra just hanging out with hermit crabs for the last 10 years and just acting like nothing happened. Would have been nice if we got to the new galaxy a couple episodes ago and had more time to track him down, make the reuniting more meaningful.

Also, how the heck did Thrawn not find Ezra in those 10 years? Sabine found him in like a day, based off Thrawns intel lol. I hope this is addressed in the later episodes, Thrawn is supposed to be one of the smartest, most calculated, best strategists in all of Star Wars it would be pretty bad if Ezra being so easy to find for Sabine did not somehow figure into his master plan.

He probably doesn't care that much about it. It's why he left it up to the mercenaries (who do not matter to him one way or another) to deal with that situation. I think Thrawn is too pragmatic to hold a grudge, he just wants to get out of there.

As for Ezra just chilling like nothing happened, he's had ~10 years to adjust to being there, so of course it's going to look like he's adapted pretty well to it.
