Ace Attorney wouldn't be Ace Attorney without those crazy characters!

Having played, what, 7-8 Ace Attorney games, I would describe the majority of the cast as being eccentric to some degree.

Oldbag is fine in small doses. It's just that in 1-3 and AAI1, we get an overdose of her. 2-4 has a manageable amount where she doesn't become obnoxious, and that's the only case where I truly enjoy her. She's not bad in 1-3, we just get a little too much of her + S4L M4N3LL4.

This is how most of them are. I'm perfectly fine with a good amount of them because they're not shoved down our throats. The reason I dislike 2-3 is because there are just too many eccentrics. And that's one of the only cases in the original trilogy that I've ever skipped by choice, the other being 1-5 due to its length.

But yes, Ace Attorney wouldn't be Ace Attorney without a few whackadoodoos. It's what makes the game click.

Hah, Oldbag was my first thought as well.

Keep in mind, if we're talking about what they do for the series, we should also take into consideration how characters like Phoenix and Edgeworth react to them.

I say on average they make it better. There are certainly a few flops but series would lose much of its charm without them.

I'm taking this to mean the characters that are eccentric by Ace Attorney standards and those ones are definitely low quality almost all the time. They don't always actively detract from the game but I'm almost never glad to see them.

I think the whole cast being a little eccentric makes the games way better though. I guess my overall take is that being eccentric is fine but there needs to be something else to your character too.

The only really bad ones are Hotti and Meekins, but they're both really bad.

That creature. I can't imagine listing Hotti and Meekins while giving him a pass.

Brushel is a reporter and he seems like more of a freak than the psychiatric inmate and the inept cop having a nervous breakdown. His animations are straight-up uncanny.

At first I thought he was twisting his tongue around his head instead of his tie and I didn't think that was out of the realm of possibility for him at all

I fat fingered and voted for the wrong option. Fuck. Voted for ambivalence, meant to vote that they're better more than half the time. There's some exceptions (all my homies hate Hotti), but on the flipside other characters (Oldbag, my queen) bump that rating way up.

"Eccentric"? That's, like, when things can shock and stuff, right?

Anyway, they're more good than bad especially since hating on them (or seeing people hating on them) is still fun most of the time.

Yeah, this.

Although I will note that I don't think Meekins is nearly as bad as consensus. Bad, sure. Just not "worst character in the series" material.

My most recent Ace Attorney experience was GAA ep. 1 (which I will finish some day,) but most of the side characters in that are ridiculous in an annoying can-we-stop-watching-this-animation-already way. The Japanese defendant guy with his stupid flailing arms is among the most absurd. I could definitely do without all the jurors. Every witness goes beyond "having charm" into "okay, we get it already." I just generally wish they could have turned it down a notch or three.

I'd say the majority of eccentric AA characters are enjoyable. A large part of AA's enjoyment are animations and design, which are usually best shown by those characters. Yes, there's a few really weak characters, but all-in-all, it's definitely a highlight.

the problem with those two is that, for some unknown reason, they come back (in meekins case several times!)
if zinc lablanc or whoever was in several cases people would hate him too!

I can't think of any AA characters I have a deeply negative reaction to. Cases sure, but the problems I have with certain cases are rarely things I would directly blame on individual characters. Also a) I'm quite tolerant of annoying tics, b) The silly characters often get entertaining reactions out of Wright/Edgeworth/etc. Like, I've never once minded Larry or Lotta or Oldbag or Meekins or Bushel or Leblanc or Hotti or Moe or whoever, even when they show up again.

Honestly, if anything, I feel more positive about those characters than I do about Nahyuta, and he's supposed to be a major character.

The jurors in GAA (and Layton) are by and large notably worse. However, this tends to work in the advantage of jurors who end up actually being interesting/plot important.
