The writing stopped being witty/smart around seasons 9-11 and everything became noticeably crap from season 13 onwards.

Al Jean's second stint as showrunner made things a lot worse.

Like others have said, I'm not even passing judgement on the movie. But if we're looking for the moment that Simpsons went from passion project to soulless moneymaker, it would be the movie, because that's the most clear cut moment where Groening flat out says the decision to not wait until the show was over was driven by ratings:
https://web.archive.org/web/20061029045609/http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117940840.html?categoryid=14&cs=1
The original intention, said Groening, was to delay the film until the show was done.

"We tried to save this until the end of the series, but that intention was undone by good ratings," said Groening. Last month, Fox committed to two more seasons of the show.

I watched all the episodes when D+ dropped. There are notable episodes from season 8-12 that are appropriate for jumping the shark.

But there is a season 17 episode where Abe becomes a matador. This was quite possibly the worst and cringiest episode I watched at that point, and is when the show went from being just mediocre to mostly just bad for a number of seasons (Boys of Bummer would be the next season, which is an objectively awful piece of television).

The Armin Tamzarian episode was just another episode when I was a kid. Like it's not particularly good, I wasn't interested in the maudlin drama of it even as a kid, but to see grown fucking adults pull it out as "THIS IS WHERE MY CHILDHOOD SIMPSONS DIED" is absolutely ridiculous and it always has been. It's up there with grown-ass people complaining about Lisa being an SJW creator's pet who's always right. And shit like this is almost always from the American side of things too.

Here in Australia, the Simpsons is basically a way of life; try and find someone born between 1990 and 2003 who doesn't know at least one Simpsons quote. It was a 6pm staple on Channel Ten for decades.

The later seasons were definitely different, and the Treehouse of Horror segments becoming bland pop culture retreads became more and more apparent. But I watched up until season 21, and I only stopped because my mum got a new partner who hated the show and wouldn't let me watch it after I'd spent the past 14 years of my life watching it almost nightly.

That being said, there was a nadir of the show that just made me feel weird and angry. It's a season 18 episode called Boys of Bummer - Bart's little league team is in the finals, and the game-winning catch is on Bart's shoulders in the last seconds of the game. Bart fumbles it, and his team loses.

The entire town of Springfield proceeds to harass Bart verbally, emotionally and physically. After being put in the hospital after one of these occurences, Bart becomes so mentally fucked up by the unending abuse that to escape the harassment, he climbs out onto the ledge of the hospital to commit suicide. The mob outside tells him to jump.

It takes an incensed speech from Marge for anyone to even consider making amends, but by the end of the episode where they restage the little league game so Bart can make the catch and restore his confidence, the entire thing is so misanthropic and bleak. Everyone in Springfield bullied Bart to toe point of suicidality. What the actual fuck is that?

It hit theaters after season 18 in 2007 but the decision to actually start making it started in 2001 which would have been during or right after Season 13. Season 13 is also when Mike Scully stepped aside as executive producer and Al Jean came back to run things (having originally left around season 4)

I don't know enough about that writer's room to say for sure, since it's a bit like trying to pin a good season of SNL on a single writer. I have no doubt he's behind many of the best episodes but too many people have contributed for me to know if he even wrote most of the top 10.

Oh yeah, that's a bad one. The opening where he goes to get assistive suicide - in a prolonged homage to Soylent Green - was genuinely really fucking disturbing. Like you were watching a blissed out Grandpa Simpson end his life.

I remember later in the episode where he's at odds with Lisa, because being a bullfighter he kills the bulls at the end of the fights, he pulls out a cow tail to dry his tears or something. Definitely a bad one.

By far the worst guest star ever on the show. It wasn't just because it was Musk - even when at the time he was more highly regarded - it was an awful performance. It sounded like he was hungover and just wanted to leave.

And being a parody of The Man Who Fell to Earth was such a bizarre reference.

The controversy to the Principal and the Pauper reminds me of the blowback from the Terrence and Phillip April Fool's joke early on in South Park.

The episode was basically a parody of beginning of season twists while itself also being one, then reversing things at the end like it never happened. South Park similarly had a two-parter about Cartman's real father, and the night of the second part ended up being a Terrence and Phillip episode instead, and people were pissed.

It's basically like "we're fine with you doing parodies of everything else, but don't you DARE play these jokes on us, the fans!" It's kind of overblown.

I guess in my mind (to add onto what I said before) when Homer stopped going to work and came up with all these "side hustles" to make money was when things were starting to get dumb. I don't really think it was such a bad thing to try and get Homer to do crazier things, instead of just relying on the humor of his normal job but wow the Simpsons really ran for the longest time ever. Shoulda ended a decade ago or more lol

I came here to say basically this but IMHO it's actually a great episode with fantastic gags.

I see where people are pointing to this episode as the start of losing the "soul" of the characters, but I think it still handles the characters well.

The Alec Baldwin / Kim Basinger episode. For me, idk if it's the "Jumping the shark" episode, but it's one that I can point to that will highlight everything wrong what the Simpsons became. The quality of the jokes starts to tank. The characters lose so much charm, "Jerkass" Homer especially. But the major thing for me is the celebrity worship is so fucking cringe.

Everybody brings it up because it may be one of the best pieces of writing you can point to for the show is the scene when the barflys and the churchgoers switch places. That is a perfect Simpsons gag.

Seasons 2-7 was peak Simpsons, season 8-9 was where the show started to dip as the show became dumber rather than clever, but by season season 10 the show had become old...

There were still funny bits but the show was no longer cool as Family Guy, Futurama, and South Park all eclipsed it...

Yes the consensus is that the principal pauper episode was jump the shark episode especially when Matt Groening and Harry Shearer both said the episode was bad. Going through that reveal only to at the end to say eh he's still Skinner to us was just bad storytelling and was a big insult to longtime fans. That was when many people including TV blogs, news articles, etc declared that the golden age of Simpsons was over. Some say Homer's Enemy was the first one but that was a good episode and the highest rated off all time viewer wise. Homer basically took over he show as he dumber and dumber and by the 2000s it was like a Family Guy wannabe...

Really if the movie ended the show there would still be a big love for the entire show but it kept going and going until it became what it was created to mock a stale sitcom...

After the movie it became the celebrity show, the Lady Gaga and Elon Musk episodes in particular were some of the worst of all time and it contradicted everything old Simpsons was about not glorifying celebrities but humanizing them...

The only funny thing about Simpsons today is that its still on the air...

Heck now only South Park is still considered must watch these days and even then the last decade has hurt it too...
