Unfortunately kids these days think trade jobs are below them(you work at Starbucks lmfao)

This is why I have ZERO sympathy for people who claim they dont make a living wage, because theyd rather complain about it than do something about it

Bad faith topic. But regardless, trades arent for everyone either. Not everyone wants to live to work, no matter how well it pays.

AKA Introverts are living in a world that's more and more were only a few of them will have any careers that they can thrive in while more will have a world that looks like hell where most won't want them.

The problem with this logic is you need to educate 1 million people to raise 100 geniuses. Who are the geniuses among them? Educating the masses must be done. If not college then some other means. But human knowledge has to keep advancing for civilization to continue at our population levels.

Actually more jobs than ever are requiring college degrees. At my last job they wouldn't promote anyone to a management type position without papers even if they were there for over 20 years and had to train the new supervisors.

It's a stupid trend. If someone has the knowhow and experience to do a job, there shouldn't be some expensive requirement just because some corporate goon says so.

I live in the bum fuck middle of nowhere on the edge of Appalachia and I push students to whatever theyre best suited towards. I work at a combined middle school/high school and talk to my students about whether they should go to a vocational school or collegeeven though Im not a guidance counselor. Good teachers will always care about their students and foster their growth.

The area is also EXTREMELY poor. However, students that are smart and/or talented enough can even start college or trade school early through government programs. Given how poor my area is, Im betting most other districts have that option. Hell, I started college at 15.

So the options for both are there, and responsible teachers will help their students explore their various options. I havent seen much you have to go to college mentality (if any) from my colleagues. Ive suffered through some really excruciatingly awful jobs that were a terrible fit for me, so I encourage kids to do what makes them happy.

As a university professor, I can say that college isn't for everyone.

And despite the narrative that "high schools push everyone to go to college", the truth is that only ~35% of high school graduates go to college in the U.S.

But I've had a handful of students who were wholly unqualified for college and I'm not sure how they got through the enrollment process.

Easy student loans. That's why.

I flunked out of two colleges, did night classes in a third, and finally got a degree in the fourth. Easy student loans did that.

High schools in general should be used to get teenagers ready for the real world with real world skills. By the time someone leaves high school, they should be more than capable for applying for 1 step higher than retail jobs without needing prior experience. So if retail pays lets say 20k a year, then they should be able to apply for positions paying 30k a year.
