Unless youre going to be a doctor, lawyer, teacher, or engineer, a college degree for the most part isnt worth the paper its printed on.

Unfortunately kids these days think trade jobs are below them(you work at Starbucks lmfao)

This is why I have ZERO sympathy for people who claim they dont make a living wage, because theyd rather complain about it than do something about it

I think trade schools should certainly be presented to kids as a viable alternative to college.

There isn't one path that suits everybody.

High Schools also need to push the idea of going to a college that's in your price range. I remember my HS councilor telling me to "get into the best school you can for all 4 years and just deal with the loans later on". That was such fucking dogshit advice, I still to this day wish all the bad things in the world to happen to her.

Colleges should also be required to let kids know an average ROI on the degree theyre choosing, and get rid of the 100% useless degree options

I like that idea. I was more on the idea of charging tuition based on the major rather than all subjects costing the same.

A simple google search would suffice for that.

And schools shouldn't be pushing students towards anything. Present to them the options, and let them choose for themselves.

We had that at my highschool. Carpentry, Masonry, Automotive and Horticulture. I went through Horticulture route. We did all the landscaping at our school, did turf stuff at the football and baseball fields. Learned an absolute ton about growing plants as we had an awesome greenhouse. The teacher was so cool, too. Had a huge impact on me.

Carpentry went out and worked for Habitat for Humanity building houses. Same with Masonry. Automotive had a nice shop and they worked on teachers cars and their own to learn.

I went to highschool about fifteen years ago but those programs are still going strong.

I went to a high school that had a vo-tech program and it was great.

It should be a requirement for all high schools in the country to offer it. Creates more jobs and teaches people actually useful skills.

I don't think Trade Schools are always the best solution as some people do, but I do think High Schools need to add an entire "Vocational" curriculum. Just have a bunch of classes about White and Blue collar jobs.

I can only speak for the school district I went to and the one my children are currently in, but they both offered/offer a myriad of vocational courses. I literally had my cars radiator fixed back in 1996 by my classmates that were taking automotive classes my senior year of HS.

My nephew currently spends half the school day at the local Boces learning carpentry work.

Im guessing the people that keep saying these Why doesnt high schools teach real life things? dont really look into the classes high schools are actually offering.

I mean, this already happens. College admissions have been trending down for like a decade, especially after the pandemic. Additionally, trade school admissions are up. Many high schools either have in house career technical education programs, or partner with a local trade school to offer high school classes. This just seems like you're getting upset over something you're pretty out of touch on.

Im not saying college isnt a viable path for anyone, all Im saying is all these people saying you cant have a good life without a college degree(for example, everyone told me growing up if I didnt go to college I would only ever make minimum wage, I make close to $40 an hour right now, and it will only go up)

Heres the thing people dont really say that anymore.

Vocation and Trade schools are being pushed more than ever. Its getting to the point where theres more people getting waitlisted for trade schools than certain colleges

Yes, but this is a common problem with peoples perceptions of schools. They often assume that they are the way they were when they went to school, even decades later. Schools have changed a lot, in many ways, since I was a pupil at one. Im only really aware of how much they have changed because I work in them. Otherwise, Id probably be the same way.

The only thing that some masters degrees qualify you for, is to be a teacher. My sister got her masters in marine biology. She lived in Hawaii, perfect place to be for the career. But problem is, theres literally no money in doing that work. So now she runs her own nature school for kids.

By contrast, my other sister got her masters degree in accounting. She just bought a brand new house that she even customized the plans with the builder before construction.

Choose well kids!

Thigns like this seem to indicate that with robots/ AI taking more and more jobs being Charismatic or social skills will matter more then anything.

AKA Introverts are living in a world that's more and more were only a few of them will have any careers that they can thrive in while more will have a world that looks like hell where most won't want them.

When plumbers make a fuckton of money, it will become a desireable trade again, probably around the time STEM pay tanks because everyone has a STEM degree.

Schools shouldn't be pushing anything. Give people the opportunity to make their own choices. I went to college, decided I wasn't comfortable with the amount of money it costs since I still wasn't 100% sure what I wanted to do. Drove a semi for a couple years to save up cash before going back for HVAC. I couldn't be happier. Currently making about 90k a year in a rural area where the average houshold income is about half of that, and I can comfortably get a job anywhere in the country. Working a blue collar job that is "below" so many people is going to allow me to retire with a lake house by the time I'm 50 assuming everything continues according to plan.

So around now, from what I can tell. Tech jobs are hurting and it's $150/hr to get an electrician to the house.

They're making it harder in some places to hit journeyman level though. It's like 800 school hours and 8000 on the job hours in some places. L
