Tipping being an assumed part of the business model is no better than AAA publishers trying to crowd fund their next game. Like, the customers should pay for the service - that's where their obligations end. They shouldn't also be directly paying your employees' wages. That's your bill to foot.

Can't blame people too much for not knowing the customs.

Tipping is an outdated anti-labor practice rooted in racism originally, and now has shifted to being more of a sexist practice as waitress is a dead end job largely held by women.

Now if those Euro-tourists knew all that and still didn't tip and laughed about it, fuck their stupid laughing faces.

American tipping culture is stupid and we should be actively trying to end it.

That said, that is the culture. Stiffing your waiter isn't rebeling against the system, it isn't making a statement, it's just fucking over the laborer and you are an asshole for doing it. Don't want to leave a tip, eat somewhere where they aren't expected. Not spending money at tipping establishments does a lot more to fight tipping culture than stiffing your server.

And I think it's a basic travel expectation that when you travel to a different country you try to follow cultural norms. From Europe where tipping isn't expected, cool, I wish it was like that here, it isn't so how about not being an ass to your waiter and tip them.

Hey Chicago just voted in minimum wage for all jobs. It is in steps but at least it will happen.

Fuck tipping culture, and fuck the fact that servers aren't paid a decent wage. Am I the one who should solve the problem by tipping? No fucking way. I happily tip if the service is exceptional, but more often than not the service is subpar to average - in these instances I won't even tip 1 cent.

For the record, I live in Switzerland, where the minimum wage for servers is around the equivalent of $25/hour. Though if I lived in the US, I would stick to this principle.

The employer is still responsible for employees receiving the full minimum wage after including tips, even if the employer has to pay more to make up the difference (but if that happens too regularly with a particular employee, they will be fired for being a bad server).

My biggest issues with tipping is how much they expect for it.

No you're not entitled to more then a few bucks max, regardless of however much the meal cost.

It was rude to laugh, they should not have done that.

But tipping is a disgraceful practice. Just incorporate staff costs into the cost of the meal. Don't rely on guilting customers into subsidising your terrible wages.

American, not Western. It isn't expected in most other countries - it isn't outright considered rude unlike your example of Japan, but it's not standard either, it's for exceptional service.

Tipping is wrong. I dont really go to restaurants unless someone else is paying so I never deal with it. But in theory I am very against tipping. I think its an incredibly idiotic concept

As an American, I fucking hate tipping. I do my share of 20%, but I think it's dumb.

Nobody should be making less than minimum wage.

It doesn't help when they ask you for tips when you pay electronically for food, and you aren't exactly getting a service.

I don't care how "rude" it supposedly is when she then demands to close the borders to Europeans as the response. She's a dumbass. Racism, nationalism, or xenophobia. Or all at the same time.
