As somebody who works in a place where a lot of parents bring their kids, I can say with absolute certainty that if anything, more of those little bastards need to be on a leash. Many many more.

I used to see a kid leashed at church back in the 90's. I thought it was weird then, but I realize that some children need the extra safety measures due to high amounts of energy.

Edit: Just to clarify, the child was part of an attending family. Not just a kid that was leashed up all the time at church.

Toddlers need to be leashed. Fewer things piss me off more than parents who don't keep their eyes on their three year old and said three year old wanders off and does something really fucking stupid/chaotic and the parents go all surprised pikachu face about it.

Bringing my 1.5yo to a cruise soon, and seriously thinking about leashing her because she hates being in the stroller now that she can reliably walk, and a cruise is an unfamiliar, potentially dangerous place to have a 1.5yo run off with thousands of others on the ship. As shes 1.5yo, she literally cannot be reasoned with / disciplined yet, so its not like I can tell her to stay by my side.

Some kids are prone to wonder off while some fear losing sight of a parent. All depends on the kid. Some have high energy and will run right into traffic and the leash may be better than trusting your split second reaction time.

I havent but have had the thought with my youngest. He hates holding hands and cant be trusted to not hold hands in a parking lot. Having that fight with him in the parking lot certainly doesnt look better than a leash.

To the people asking if the poll results are troll votes, what's better if you have a child prone to running off: Just hoping you can react in time, or, you know, stopping it from being a problem in the first place?

You can have all the situational awareness in the world, but guess what, it still doesn't mean you're going to be able to react immediately if the kid just suddenly darts off. Sometimes literally all it takes is a few feet to become a tragedy.

Do any of you people have an actual answer other than "Durr, be a better parent?"

Responsible parenting would be getting a babysitter, or the other parent stays home.

You gotta do what you gotta do, if that includes leashing, it is what it is. Everybody is different, and every toddler is different, too. Remember what happened to that Bulger kid in the UK? Took two seconds and he was convinced to take off with a couple of other kids while mum looked away, leashed to a stroller or a wrist would've prevented that, I'm sure there's some parents out there who are terrified of that. Situational awareness and attention to detail aren't going to stop your kid from getting snatched, yknow? A leash will.

You think all toddlers can effectively be controlled? Just tell us you've never had a child or interacted with a toddler before for Go'd sake. I had one that was a saint, and one that was Satan in mortal form. You cannot control them very well no matter how good a parent you are. They make their decisions, we can only guide them.
