Quite a hot topic in my community forum yesterday, about a news article where a woman came to physical blows with another woman who brought her 8 year old son into the ladies.

Most of the posters lean towards following the child's gender and that other restroom users should be more understanding if the parent isn't the same gender as the child.

Edit: maybe I shouldn't have included the child's age in the op. My question was supposed to be independent of the news article.

Would that woman be fine if a 35 year old man entered the ladies' restroom with their 8 year old daughter?

On the other hand, what father would want to take their 8 year old daughter into the men's room?

Not an easy question to answer.

Parent's. Take the kid into the stall and either go in with them or wait outside, depending on age.
Little boy in the women's room? If you seriously care about that there's something wrong with you.

Usually the parent's restroom since their an adult. As for an average 8 year old, if you're worried you could knock first and find out how many people are in their bathroom or something but they should be going in their own.

If the child is young enough that they need the parent, take them into the parent's gender one I guess.

Although this is yet another case where single user unisex bathrooms would solve just about every bathroom-related issue.

I believe when I was little, my mom took me to the lady's room. I don't recall anyone objecting to that in any way.

Though yeah, a unisex restroom solves the 'issue'.

If it's necessary, Parent's gender for sure.

But seriously, what kind of person throws a tantrum including "physical blows" because of an 8 year old in the wrong bathroom?

An 8yo is not a toddler (it typically is a 2nd or 3rd grader).
But any kid who can't manage the bathroom themselves, obviously goes wherever the adult goes.

hard question
i feel like with a male child either option is viable but with a female child its probably best to go with her gender only because you dont have to explain why a bunch of men are urinating on the wall

There is still a crazy stigma surrounding any males in the ladies'/girls' room. I can't think of any men who would be upset in the slightest if a mom goes with her son into the men's room or if a dad took his daughter into the men's room. However, women/girls will freak probably tf out if a dad goes with his daughter into the ladies' room and apparently... if a mom takes her son into the ladies' room.

It's a complicated issue but it's definitely centered in the ladies' restroom

I've seen major retailers going toward a third bathroom model, with a single toilet in a fairly large bathroom designated as a "family" bathroom that is also suitable for assisting a wheelchair-bound adult as well as a child or children.

My son in 8 now.

At this point, I trust him in the restroom by himself. He knows if he feels uncomfortable to come out and get one of us.

Prior to that, he knew he could get either of us to take him to the restroom should he need it (he chose me because he wanted to go to the mens room).

Parents.

But what? Eight year-olds are clearly old enough to go to the restroom by themselves. Thats past the threshold, barring a mental or physical handicap.

I used to foster three girls and this was always a tough one for me. I intentionally planned my outings in places that had unisex bathrooms in case I had to take them. But that was not always possible.

The girls were 5, 4, and 2, and sometimes I had to take one of them (or all three of them) into the men's room to use the bathroom. No one really seemed to care, fortunately. Depending on the girl, and the bathroom layout, I either waited outside the stall, or had to go into the stall with them.

I don't think people would find it socially acceptable for me to take them into the women's restroom. I only had to do it once when the men's room had surprisingly a long line and the oldest really needed to go or risk having an accident. I rushed in carrying her to the stall so I think the women understood what was happening, lol.
