A near perfect kind of movie to me. Encapsulates and explores a lot of moods and themes at once. That terminally online, lonely, isolated feeling. Nasty viral internet trends that consistently and tragically ruin kids' lives with disturbing pedophilia ties. Even arrested development & the feeling of losing a parent are explored with traumatic realism. We're All Going to the World's Fair is unflinchingly dark, but it's not depraved. It's a movie with a story that any one of us could be unwittingly involved in at any time with just one bad day. The comfort of Casey's bedroom where most of the film takes place is a false safety while life moves on in the background with a father who detached long ago; the World's Fair is internet escapism for Casey at its finest and most targeted, perfectly suited to her psychological damage when she needed it most. Casey asserts that her videos were not real, but does she really believe that? Do we as an audience really believe that? In the end, it really doesn't matter. They were always just an ephemeral distraction anyway. What Casey really wanted was somewhere to belong. And whether she found that or not, we can all agree that how she did it is not the most healthy way of finding that community. It forces us to confront the thin boundary between the digital persona we craft and our true selves.

The film does not go out of its way to explain anything really. Its power lies in its bizarre allure and atmosphere, its weird flashes of body horror, and the terrific lead of Anna Cobb. It's a film as haunting as you personally make it out to be, and that's where I always find the best horror to be at.

Is it possible for a film to blow you away every time you watch it? Yes it is, because Trick 'r Treat exists - the amazing Halloween delight that is one of those films that captures the vibe of a season so well you'd swear it existed since the dawn of time. Trick 'r Treat holds mass appeal as a horror fan - if you like gore, if you like Tales from the Crypt style black comedy, if you like horror focused on children, if you like sexual-tinged horror, werewolves, or just that cozy vibe of being in a neighborhood loaded with decorations aplenty, Trick 'r Treat pretty much has something for you to sink your teeth into. At the center of it all is Sam, who has inched his way into becoming a horror icon and the perfect symbol of Halloween. Just a crazy good time, you literally can't go wrong with it as a Halloween choice, especially with its breezy length.

I remember this as one of your nominations for the last time I attempted one of my ill-fated big horror rankings topics (I miss doing those!) I read it through all the way then, and unfortunately don't remember too much of it now but I think just this first chapter alone nails what you're going to get into when you embark on the journey. It's the typical "kid-friendly thing turned disturbing and horrifying". On the one hand, it's the sort of thing that can be a little cheap - woah, look at SpongeBob getting penetrated and injected with enzymes through the mouth by Patrick. That's not what's supposed to happen in a cartoon like that!

But hey, when it's this well-done with artwork resembling some of the greatest body horror pieces around, I can easily give it a flying pass. The writing is genuinely funny and compelling and you can imagine the characters from the show transplanted into this world of horror with no real disconnect. Everything still feels authentically SpongeBob. This comic does get extremely anime-esque as it goes on too but still keeps that body horror flair alive. It's a good read and worth it just for the artwork alone.

Absolutely classic for a reason. Whether you remember it for the amazing Gammell artwork or how the series further popularized some of the most famous urban legends out there (the hookman, Blood Mary, spider bite), SStTitD is a controversial and important cornerstone of children's horror. These stories and visuals are alluring in the most surreal and nightmare-like of manners, true terrors that allow kids to control and confront their fears in a concrete way on their own terms. It's insane to me they tried to replace the artwork some years back, with results 100% worse & less-scary across the board, sanitized and de-toothed. Might as well briefly comment on the movie too - it's fine. The horror is nowhere near the level of the books, but the general vibes and looks of the various creatures were finely done and as a more kids' friendly horror movie you could do a lot worse!
