They """correctly""" translated a bunch of names now. Some examples are

Yardiovich -> Speardovich
Shy Away -> Beezo
Muku -> Thropher

I don't know much about the original Japanese version. What characters are getting their names nerfed the most?

Neo Squid is the Duff Mcwhalen of Super Mario RPG. It's dumb, but so charmingly so that they should keep it regardless.

I just want Culex to be envious of their "third dimension" like in the Japanese version, and still be a 2D sprite.

But as long as it keeps Toad's "because I left my bazooka at home" line, I'm good.

"Speardovich" is an enormous downgrade of a name

It's funny because in every other localization discussion I see anywhere, people *want* correct translations and get angry if anything is changed.

Neosquid definitely is getting nerfed. It was originally "mouth" in Japanese because it's the mouth of the sword. No one has any clue how the fuck Ted Woolsey came up with Neosquid for it >_>

Probably. Apparently Mega Drain is lightsaber or something in Japanese which makes way more sense with the animation

Shy Away is definitely much better.

Beezo is literally what they are (from SMB2).

A lot of the names in MRPG were hella borked so Im glad to see this get straightened out.

Who knows? All they showed off is the team attacks, which would make it easier if they don't adjust the stats

At least in the post game, yes. After you finish the story, every boss in the game gets beefed up and you can refight them for a big challenge

His name was Yaridovich and it's because a yari is a Japanese straight-headed spear.

He was a guy that had to translate things by himself in a crunch time where censorship was everywhere and he had actual text limitations. Cut the man some slack.

Also kinda glad I haven't actually played Mario RPG before now: I won't have much of anything to be disappointed by

I wouldn't have remembered enough of the original script to ever notice any changes

And his translations had so much character to them. He truly cared to make something special of them in a time when literally nobody who mattered would have gave a crap.

Option to use OG translation or RIOT

Haven't ever played these games in English but I do find it weird that JRPG fans seem to be split between people who want an accurate translation and people attached to mistranslations for nostalgic reasons.

Probably the same company that thought naming characters Rosso the Crimson and Azul the Cerulean was totally deep and badass.

Yes. They made a point to include Valentina getting punched in the first trailer so as to show that it was removed.

If they had to censor it, it was smart to get it out of the way early that they were going to do so. I'll be playing the original for a while before I give the remake a try.

You serious? They showed off insanely high damage outputs from everybody, of course its gonna be a little tougher.

The only thing I hope is kept is Toad's bazooka line. It was a much more generic line in the JP version but the bazooka line became iconic.

I'm just waiting to see if they keep Peach's ???.

The split between those who like a bit more accurate of a localization compared to those who prefer their childhood nostalgia is as old as time itself.

*Flashbacks to my friend and I debating on chrono trigger DS, with me actually liking the new translation since it properly shows lucca getting drunk compared to my friend wanting the original with frog's ye olde english speech*

Not going to lie though the toad's bazooka and bruce Lee lines were some great working designs'ish localizations and since mario rpg is on the more light-hearted comedic side I'm going to miss that kinda woosley stuff.

I played through SMRPG like 5 times as a kid and dont have any recollection of the neosquid part on Exor (I had to look it up). It mightve not registered to me how insane of a mistranslation it was as a child though. I was probably like well some adult put it there so I guess thats correct? and just proceeded on with the game.

Especially because the part leading up to Exor is such a fucking chore I mostly blanked it out of my mind.

Man, I never got Yaridovich's name until this topic and I'm kind of ashamed of myself because I was not completely unfamiliar with the yari as a spear.
