I did not miss the point, I said that judging how fun vs corporate something is compared to how it was 30 years ago is very likely to have nostalgia clouding, and McDonald's being described as fun instead of corporate was a perfect example that was already included.

I wouldn't say that. There are more people on the internet than before because it has become more of a necessity to own at least one device that can access it. It's still a luxury. And the only thing that seems to have gotten significantly cheaper is the means to access it. You can get a very cheap smartphone for a price that wouldn't get you a computer or laptop.

EDIT: Wasn't accounting for the old dial-up method which had hourly rates, so I suppose it has gotten significantly cheaper to spend any significant time using the internet

That has nothing to do with the quality of the internet and everything to do with how much cheaper computers got since the late 90s and early 2000s.

Yeah, it's "Better", but better is "the risk of someone showing you Tubgirl has been replaced by ads for clickbait lists that serve no purpose but to throw more ads at you".

Not saying shock links in general are great, but there is something to be said for accidentally stumbling upon some rando's blog and enjoying the content versus "here's a curated list of advertised links based on something you googled once."

I didn't either, but arguably the hourly rates weren't such a terrible thing since even the laziest parents had a valid reason to tell their kids to get offline for a while. They might not care what their kids are watching or doing online, but they'd certainly care about the price of the phone bill.

so yes it was a luxary that is now accessible by everyone

and thanks to this ppl can actually find friends who share their interests

ppl have access to a wealth of information they never did before

ppl are able to meet minorities

the big cause of society moving further to the left has been thanks to the internet opening ppls eyes

A whole lot less ads and a whole lot more absolutely gaudy sites. Every single random geocities page just seared the eyes. Centralized fandom sites didn't exist. If you were interested in say Pokemon or DBZ, you'd browse a dozen or so fanmade sites and hope the info given was correct.
But often places did have a far more tight-knit communities than they seem to do these days. There weren't millions of people chasing clout and few companies to push shit onto you.

More so that three of those things are social media.

I do have to agree that Big Bang Theory ruined geek culture. Once something is a mainstream and popular is when it starts to dilute to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I disagree.
Internet was still fine before Trump announced his presidential bid.

For example, one of the most racist hellhole in the internet, 9gag was a liberal haven up until 2014-2015. Nowadays it's a hive of scum and villainy.

Big Bang Theory getting dunked on. I don't have any problem with the show in particular but I never cared to watch it much outside of a couple clips.

I always do think 2007 is around where the cool insiders club of the internet basically died. From that point on it started to become more sterile and corporate and just started to overtake daily real life. I don't really want to go back to 90s internet. But I'd say around 2004 was peak internet coolness.

A lot of great advancements have happened after 2007 but life will never ever be like it was before then.

Nah it was def starting to fall apart before Trump. As someone who was lucky enough to grow up with it from the 90s to now, it was really easy to see this thing where you could connect to anyone and just talk start fracturing in to small insular communities as it got bigger, and as with most of 'em they just became increasingly hostile to outsiders and more bitter as a result.

Doesn't help that it very quickly became a necessity instead of a luxury. That's what really fucked everything up. Barely even had a "more accessible" period. It went from "cool but unneeded" to "literally everything is on this forever, fuck you if you don't get on it" almost over night.
