Exercise and reading aren't really that much more worthwhile as activities go and I say this as someone who used to read a lot. You want to stay healthy and informed sure, but if we're talking free time, a video game is not a bad plan. I've learned quite a lot from games, unironically. Besides if your goal is self improvement or acquiring useful skill sets during your free time, there are better things to do than work out or read. Staying healthy and informed should already be part of your normal routine anyway and free time should be spent learning more sought after skills. My Father in Law is absolutely addicted to books, to the extent that he wont leave the house, books cover every surface, and they pour out of the attic every time it is opened. People can get addicted and use too much time with any hobby. Where did this come from that you cant game and have a career and family? I have been a lawyer for eighteen years. I am the litigation director for my firm. I have been married for 25 years and have kids doing great at HS and College-who I have had a lot of fun playing video games with over the years. Somehow I manage to game too. My youngest son and I had a blast just this morning shooting down ships and building outposts together in Starfield. I guess the time we spent together laughing and high fiving doesnt count because it is video games? Any hobby you have fun with that is undertaken in moderation and does not interfere with adult responsibility is time well spent.
