Once someone has kids. Can't be spending hours playing COD and shit when you need to raise them kids.

No age limit. A 100 yr old with no kinds is fine playing games.

The trouble with the "But... television, books, movies..." argument is that those mediums can be consumed with much less impact to daily lives.

I don't think there's an age where you should stop playing video games.

I think there is for sure situations where you should stop playing video games.

Parents never have a good excuse to play video games in my mind. There is always something better you could be doing to set your family and yourself up for success.

"But they play with me..." - That's fine. If they are actually the ones playing and aren't just behind you commenting. That's fine. I also think this makes it so you're not over consuming.

"But I wait for them to go to bed or I make time for gaming." If you're actually going out and doing things with your children that you should be doing, you should be exhausted too. No one comes home from the zoo or park with enough energy to stay up til 1 AM playing video games. If you're not doing something in your home, someone else has to. You should be there helping.

I also don't think people in their late teens through maybe late 20s or mid 30s should play video games more than 10 hours a week. These are your prime earning potential growing years. When you reach 40, things slow down a lot. You may not care about your earning potential though, but as a rule, I don't think it's good to set the bar for people that don't care about such things.

And I wouldn't consume 10+ hours of television either. I just think television is more easy to not over consume. It's still a problem though. And video games seem to naturally make people over consume them.

And yes, I've had this conversation with many people here and don't expect much support for my opinion.

If it counts for anything, because I am a Millennial Parent, I 100% agree with you. I no doubt can understand why people will disagree with you, but I do believe if you bring a child into this world you better be using majority of your energy to make sure they grow up in a health environment as much as you are humanly capable of. I'll admit I will play video games when my daughter sleeps at night at times (it's a hobby I enjoy), but I usually also use that time to catch up with my wife as well like talking basically about anything. If it's way too important, I will put down the controller to have a serious discussion.

And yes, I've had this conversation with many people here and don't expect much support for my opinion.

This is well articulated and I respect your views, but it is full of so many assumptions that just don't apply to everyone. For example: "I also don't think people in their late teens through maybe late 20s or mid 30s should play video games more than 10 hours a week. These are your prime earning potential growing years. When you reach 40, things slow down a lot. You may not care about your earning potential though, but as a rule, I don't think it's good to set the bar for people that don't care about such things."

Gaming is a primary hobby of mine and has been since Atari 2600. No one would mistake me for an ultra important or successful person, but my career is exactly what I want it to be from the time I was about ten. I am a law school graduate, a practicing lawyer for 18 years, and the head of the legal department at my shop for the last twelve. How exactly has playing games hindered my career development? In fact, the problem solving and logical thinking needed to be a lawyer was not sparked in me by school, which I found boring as hell until I got to college. My interest in solving puzzles came from playing Sierra games.

Or this: ""But I wait for them to go to bed or I make time for gaming." If you're actually going out and doing things with your children that you should be doing, you should be exhausted too. No one comes home from the zoo or park with enough energy to stay up til 1 AM playing video games. If you're not doing something in your home, someone else has to. You should be there helping." Sorry, but no. I spend tons of time with my kids and doing things around the house for the family. Yesterday I worked a full day, picked up my son from school, made dinner, helped my youngest son with his homework (my other son is in college, so I already raised a fantastic lacrosse goalie and engineer while also gaming), pulled up our garbage bins, did the dishes and then read our youngest a story at bedtime. Then I had a couple of hours to myself and I played Starfield, and now I am back at work today just like I should be. And there is nothing wrong with taking two hours of the day for me, as long as my other responsibilities are fulfilled. In fact, I am a better husband and father and lawyer when I can do that. Saying "Parents can't game because there is always something to do" is a sure path to being a terrible parent. Of course there is always something to do-for parents and everyone else. But being productive every second of the day is not a laudable goal-it is a path to a nervous breakdown.

But your first paragraph is the one I disagree with the most. Anyone can get addicted to any hobby and have it interfere with their responsibilities, not just video games. I have said this in this thread and others: My father in law has never picked up a game controller in his life, but he has a crippling addiction to books. He is a book hoarder, and was a neglectful father and husband because all he wanted to do is read and collect books. People insist on continuing to stigmatize video games, when the truth is any hobby can get out of control if a person lets it.

I think we can all agree that any hobby, including video games, should not be abused to the point where they interfere with life and responsibilities. But saying things like "you can't be an adequate parent if you are a gamer" or "Being a gamer automatically means you are not meeting your potential as an earner" are just overly broad assumptions with no basis in fact. These are all things that vary from person to person, and unless a hobby is clearly interfering with a person's life, no one should be judging how others spend their leisure time.

"Growing up" isn't so much about how others perceive you. It's about how your priorities shift.

Being an adult takes a lot of time. You can continue to ignore those things, but I don't think that should be the common advice or direction to send out to people.

Houses require upkeep.
Cars require upkeep.
Children need to be raised.
Decent jobs and wages require constant training and uptraining and learning.

When you become an adult life grows from much more than just going to school and making sure you eat and shower.

So yes, being concerned about not being childish is valid. There is such a thing called arrested development. It's not just a comedy show.

Definitely outgrew gaming for the reasons stated above. Very well put.

When you are a working adult, husband, father and homeowner, it comes to pass that you have less and less time for frivolities like video games.

And boy was I a gamer growing up - it's just that life happened and I had to change with it.

I don't buy that gaming is a more involved diversion. Adults of all walks of life waste tons of time every day doing jack shit besides staring at a screen, but interact with what's on the screen and suddenly it's a concern?

Everyone needs some time off. It's necessary.

You're exaggerating. And I don't just mean the sarcasm.

Doing productive things doesn't mean they aren't relaxing. Especially when it comes to my parenting comment. For example, you could quite literally be sleeping while your kid sleeps instead of staying up to play video games and sacrificing a good rest.

This appears to be what some people actually believe. I have been married 25 years and raising kids for 20, and I find these kinds of takes in this thread extremely weird. It makes me wonder if these folks are parents, because it is impossible to accomplish the wonderful and difficult job of parenting in the manner they suggest.

Video games and other leisure activities are fine in moderation just like everything else, and hobbies are necessary for living a balanced life. Suggesting otherwise isnot tenable.

You really should be watching programs appropriate for the age of the group in the room. I'm not really sure why you would expect that to be a uncommon expectation.

There are only four acceptable things to do as a parent when it comes to being in front of a TV: 1.Watch Calliou with your kid(AHHHHH!!!); 2. Watch Paw Patrol with your kid; 3. Watch instructional videos on how to be a better parent; 4. Burn your console/gaming computer in a fire while engaged in either of those 3.
