I don't know if he's actually most popular, however the bassist for Mudvayne is insanely good and probably overlooked cause of the vocalist. Keanu Reeves in his band, Dogstar, that he plays bass/does vocals for. Which is pretty cool if you've played Cyberpunk. Also, there are just a lot more "household name" guitarists than there are drummers and bassists.
