As time went on, people experimented with new sounds/techniques and technologies that greatly expanded the genre. Keep in mind their relatively tame music was considered hard rock for that era. yes there were select musicians around that era who were tiers above at talent, but to have all the talent they did, plus writing ability and cool factor was simply just not there at the time.
