As an idol fan myself these people are some of the lowest standard of a fan you can become, its sad.

That said, idols know exactly the kind of industry they enter. To say they won't expect this kind of backlash would be disingenious. Again, I'd prefer it if idols had their own say with who they could hang out with, especially in their MV's.

But the whole industry is built upon these losers who buy into their merch and products, the fake idealized version of a female who is "innocent" and is "for them". To bring in another man (a good looking one at that) would only ruin the fantasy and their ego's.

I'm not defending the backlash by any means, just giving my two cents.

Because its a different country >_>

You should see india and how they idolize their celebrities. Its still big in Korea too, and even more toxic would you believe.

Idols in Japan are huge, and after their graduation, usually become top tier models, actresses ect.

A lot of media over there seems to glorify idol culture, so they are probably oblivious to it when they sign up.

The fans may not even be the worst part. Those companies are often run by scumbags too. Probably a lot of yakuza involvement as well.

Kawaii culture, marketability towards a recognizable style that's Japanese. Not all idol groups do it, but youth and innocence are pretty well sought after and celebrated in Japan.

And yeah theres also a weird side to it in the eyes of a westerner.

Babymetal is probably a good standard. They're an "idol" group but not traditionally an idol group. They broke out of Japan and don't adhere to a same standard. I can assure you if Suzuka started dating, not many people would have an outrage over it.

A lot Asia absolutely love AKB and Sakamichi groups. Even groups such as =Love and not Equal me are starting to gain traction. So its not every culture.

Edit: Also just to clarify, the whole Weeb = idol lover thing is so foreign to me. At least when it comes to groups like Love Live I can see the connection. But when it comes to the 46 groups, A lot of people I know who are supporters of them don't even watch anime that much. Unless you equate weeb as "Japan lover" which is kind of a generalization. Does that mean you're a weeb if you enjoy a specific thing that comes out of Japan?

Why does liking things from that country have such a specific term?

I think with Japan specifically, they have a stereotype of behaving a certain way and flaunting their fandom in ways people interested in other cultures don't.

I say weeb rather than idol lover because an idol lover would include people from Japan but the only people who have such a tiny view of the country are those whose entire view of the country's inhabitants came exclusively through a mono-cultural anime lens. Thus "weebs" as they are the people whose brains cannot fathom that Japan isn't just a homogenous moe-blob.

And yeah, Japan is basically the only place where there is a group of outside "fans" that have such a pathetic understanding of the country despite idolizing it. Every country has its fans, but none are close to as utterly absurd as weebs.

Fair enough, I hate people who do that too. I see that a lot of Twitter, especially with Kpop idols too. I still remember when people used to fill replies with kpop videos.

Correct. The closest equivalent is something like Paris Syndrome, but even then it doesn't quite encapsulate the complete disconnect from reality that many weebs portray.

Just one thing is that idol culture is pretty huge and in Asia, its something of a normalty. I wouldn't equate weebs with those people. You have business men and women going to idol shows. I literally went to some and was kinda surprised at how diverse the crowd was. Even my ex-girlfriend (who hated that I was into idols, admitted she knew some and even had an Oshi lol >_>).

But I do agree that there are some who don't bother learning the culture of the country, or even the language and its people. I really don't understand those people at all myself.

The initial premise was that you said that thinking that "And yeah theres also a weird side to it in the eyes of a westerner", and my premise is that no it is literally everywhere that thinks that the idol culture thing is weird and it is almost exclusively people that are into said idol culture that think that this sort of deal is actually not so. In addition the main reason that there is any amount of it being considered "not so" is pretty much exclusively a weeb thing, as it even exists in people who are into idol stuff (specifically the level of fanaticism that would cause things like death threats). And that includes people in Asia. Instead it is mostly just a weeb "this is how the other culture thinks about things" far more than anything else as to the misperception that you have.
