It's extremely similar to NSMB according to everyone that played it. Mario's controls are slightly tighter but most of the same core platforming is unchanged from nsmb.

The biggest overall change is no timer.
So what you're saying is that its a Mario Platformer? OH SHIT REALLY?! OFCOURSE they are gonna be similar. Its a Mario 2D Platformer. All Mario 2D Platformers have certain elements in common except for SMB2. The level design is -definitely- more setpiece heavy than ANY 2D Mario game. Mario's moveset is the most expansive. There's a lot more puzzle focused levels, and the World Map is the most interactive of any Mario game we've previously seen.

It is definitely different enough but at the same time it is at its core a 2D Mario game. Which was always SSS+ tier in terms of platforming.

Ive watched 3 video reviews and all 3 have said that it feels like the first proper sequel to Super Mario World.

That is the highest praise i cant think of.

This sounds like its gonna be special
Would you say it sounds like its gonna be wonderful?

I mean, obviously the basic gameplay is going to play the same, but the presentation clearly shows there are several new mechanics that sets it apart from NSMB.

That's because Metacritic is poison to the gaming community.

It encourages group-think, and it does a poor job of boiling down an entire game experience to a single number out of many mismatched scoring systems.

So you complained about my opinion about the game, but you're also complaining that Metacritic gave Mario too low of a score? When it is the highest since the SNES era?

How high did you want this game to be? 107 out of 100? And you expect everyone to believe you don't have any bias towards Nintendo?

The only thing I don't like about this game from the videos I've seen so far is the flagpole ending.

SMB used flag
SMB2 had that eagle mouth
SMB3 had a card
SML2 had a bell you rang
SMW had tape you cut
The 3D games also did different things, Stars for 64, Shines for Sunshine, even Moons for Odyssey

Then along came NSMB and the flagpole has been reused so many times. Even in 3DL / 3DW

I just want something different again.

Lol damn, Nintendo is getting roasted in the review section. I guess losing Charles Martinet really soured people's view of the franchise.

IDK why you're saying this like there aren't tremendous differences between SMB1 though SMW

First... I mocked your clear trolling and spam posting.

Then I mocked the way people rely on Metactritic to let a single number dictate their opinion sight unseen, and use the score to attack others online.

So ...not only do I not put much weight into Metacritic scores to begin with, I haven't played the game yet and have no way to asses if the score is even accurate!

I don't think Metacritic should be the be all and end all deciding factor as to whether people try something out, but both time and money are finite, and knowing if something is widely liked/disliked is helpful in informing our decisions.

however, if there's something I've been really looking forward to, I don't care about anyone else's view outside of technical issues; I just use MC if I'm on the fence about anything.

Don't mistake actual reviews with a Metactritic score.

In fact, I agree totally. You don't even have to buy a magazine and read a review like in the old days, you can watch a few videos on Youtube and get comprehensive reviews that detail WHY the game deserves your time or not.

It's actually kind of sad, it's never been easier or cheaper to get a number of solid reviews from good sources, but people cling to the Metacritic score as the end-all.

Metacritic has a place as a sort of "snapshot" or impression, but should never substitute thoughtful reviews from engaged fans and journalists.

I also read/watch reviews for stuff I'm interested in, but if something has a meta score of 65, for example, I might pass on it or wait for a sale, even if some of those reviews might praise it, since it would seem it had more of a niche appeal that I might not fall into.

of course I also watch gameplay, if it's a game.

That's a mistake I think.

There are trends and features in games that I don't necessarily agree with the prevailing opinion about. If you tend to always agree with popular opinion... then it's probably less of an issue, but Metacritic reinforces group-think and doesn't tell you anything more than that.

If an RPG gets a lower score because it's "too hard" or the combat is too slow and isn't enough big and flashy all the time because I often like a grounded player character that isn't stupidly OP - that's something that might actually appeal to me but I have no idea that's what dragged down the score.

So did it get a 65 because it was jank with bad controls and bad balance... or because the aesthetics didn't fit with popular trends? No way to know.

The game looks like a much needed breath of fresh air after so many identical NSMB sequels. Not sure why some people are freaking out over Charles Martinet not doing any VA.

yea, like I said, if it's something that catches my interest, I'll still watch/read reviews and watch gameplay videos.

but from my experience, I haven't run into any games that generally reviewed poorly if there wasn't something wrong (poor performance/technical issues).

I'll admit that there were games that had mid to bad reviews that I ended up enjoying, though, that I still felt were reviewed accurately, like Deadly Premonition and Killer 7, but that goes back to where I said if I'm really looking forward to something, I don't care about anyone's view.
