I was talking to my departments IT guy and called the blocky part of my laptop a power block and he genuinely looked at me like I was the stupidest person in the world just now. He did the same when my left mouse button wasnt working and he needed to take it out and put a new one in. Am I supposed to know this stuff or be willing to take apart my work computer? One time my team kept wrapped our cords around this scanner device we use at work, and he told all of us, in a room with our bosses, that he thought we were so smart so he was confused how we could make such a horrible mistake (he refuses to just print out a sheet with explicit instructions on how to pack even though this is vital to the company.

My old housemate was like this too. Guy would burn water if you let him cook, but when I saw him building a computer once and admitted I didnt know where to even start if I had to make one myself, he just laughed and went I thought you went to Penn state

These types of people really rub me the wrong way >_>

A combination of most of the people they help actually being morons, a lot of the specialized knowledge they have being relatively uncommon outside of their field, and IT being a field that people with more robust social skills tend to be less interested in such that those who do end up in it are often a little impaired in that regard. That said, I've never had issues with my IT team, but I'm also significantly more technically competent than the vast majority of people they deal with.

Why didn't you just turn it off and then on again?

Yeah, that's pretty unusual. Unless the button has physically broken and you've got a bunch of identical dead mice around that you can steal a replacement button from, odds are it's going to be quicker and cheaper to just buy a new mouse than to troubleshoot what exact part has failed and replace that. That one sounds like he's trying to secure his job by recommending things management doesn't have the technical knowledge needed to shoot down.

Uhh

It's a block, it gives power? An IT guy should be familiar with the term "power brick"

My theory is that these guys base their entire self-esteem on feeling smart which is why they get into computers so hard in the first place. They want to be smart to compensate for being social outcasts and give them feelings of confidence that they desperately needed. Maybe I'm just projecting, uh oh.

I remember someone once telling me Youre smart up until you finish schooling. Once youre in your 20s and in the professional world, you need to find something else to be.

Fortunately, turning "smart" into "knowledgeable" or "versatile" or other variants of "helpful" isn't overly difficult. Mental agility and a strong memory are very useful assets in many jobs, you just have to make an effort to apply your intelligence instead of expecting people to be impressed by the cool math tricks you can do.

What's really annoying is that most of the times I've had to go to IT, I know what the problem is and how to fix it, but I simply haven't been allowed to because our computers are locked down such that regular users are very limited in what they can do. But then given how technically competent many of the regular users are, that's probably for the best.
